Perry Softball

congrats to Perry softball!!!!!!!!! -from West Branch

I just thought it was hilarious when I came back from the rain delay at 3pm, and asked someone tailgating if they knew how long the rain delay(because my friend;s house was 5 minutes away and had pizza there), and they said they didn't know and that they asked "Are you from Strasburg?" ...lol...that was funny to me...of course the guy didn't know we were there all day rooting for NE Ohio teams (Poland and Perry)...

FOR THE DISPATCH

AKRON - It wasn't supposed to end like this.

Grove City's softball season, which almost didn't even take place until a school levy restored sports to the school, came to an abrupt close yesterday - one win short of a state title.

Massillon Perry beat the Greyhounds 10-0 in six innings, a game shortened by the mercy rule, in the Division I final at Firestone Stadium.

"They hit the ball," Grove City coach Ted Williams said. "Paige (Myers, senior pitcher) hasn't given up 10 hits in probably the last four games.

"You can't take anything away from them. They hit the ball."

Myers and Lindsey Lykins each had two of the Greyhounds' six hits.

It looked as if the Greyhounds (28-5) would jump in front quickly after Taryn Allmon's first-pitch triple to lead off the game. A ground ball to Perry shortstop Anna Fach, however, turned into a rare 6-2-5-4-3-6-1 double play.

"We made a little base-running mistake there," Williams said. "They made a big play, then turned around and scored three."

In the bottom of the inning, Perry (26-3) used an RBI single by Caitlyn Ferrell, a Grove City error and a passed ball to score three times; only one run was earned.

"We got the double play, and the momentum shifted," Perry coach Alison Heppe said. The Greyhounds left the bases loaded in the second, and the Panthers extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom half on an RBI single by Shelbi Tilton.

Perry added four runs in the fifth on Sarah Samblanet's two-out, two-run single and on Grove City's third error of the game.

Perry ended the game an inning early on Maria Tayse's two-run homer.

"I'm just really proud of these young ladies," Heppe said. "Heart is something you can't teach. We made history for the program."

The Greyhounds and Panthers endured a lot of sitting around. The game was scheduled to start at 1 p.m., but weather delays pushed the start back to after 6 p.m.

What is that now 3 different teams from the Fed have won DI titles in the last 6 years? Am I remembering that correctly? Throw in Boardman and Jackson and that's quite a softball league.

That is correct: Hoover, Lake and now Perry. Since 1998 the teams that are currently in FL have won:
7 State titles
2 State runner ups
2 State Semi 's

Major props to Perry on their first ever state title, first Jackson in b-ball and now Perry in softball. I preached a decade ago that the FED is tops in softball, I had JJ huddle groupies denounce me as a stupid kid. 4 teams in the past 10 years have won it, that's half the league.

Add a share of the Federal League Title to this year's haul. Perry beat Boardman this afternoon 12-0 in 5 innings.

Now there is a shocker, this game should have never been played. If you aren't going to put your best team out there then save the travel expense and forfeit, what a joke, typical Sparty!

No it shows a serious misalignment of priorities... you have all summer to play with your travel ball team, give up the one weekend so you can properly finish your high school season.

Lack of commitment or perhaps problems with OHSAA regulations.

Congrats to Perry on the State Championship. They earned it.

As to their share of the FL title, that one will always have an * next to it.

Spartan = Quitter

I agree this game should not have been played. At the same time I can't really blame Boardman. They have nothing to play for, out of the tournament, they are not in the running for the Fed. League title. I am sure the coach said go play with your teams. It only helps them for next year. The real problem is OHSAA and their regulations that causes these kinds of situations.

That one weekend of softball isn't going to make or break their next season tho, that's just my point. They're going to play a ton of softball this summer (as all summer teams do). I understand to a point not wanting to get behind and all that, but your commitment should be high school team first, summer team second.

I don't see a problem releasing these girls seeing that their tournament run was over, they were out of contention for the league title, graduation would have already taken place before the make-up game, and the players had committed to playing on their summer teams. Traveling ball players are chomping at the bit to play summer ball when their OHSAA tournament has ended. An unfortunate circumstance for sure.

Oracle,

With the Federal League title on the line for Perry, should Boardman have given a better effort starting their ace and having all players available?

Would Boardman have wanted another Federal League team to try their best, if they were in a position to win the league with a Perry loss?

Exactly... what if Hoover's part in the league title hunt depended on the result of the game? (ie they win it if Perry loses, they lose it if Perry wins)? I mean I understand when it comes down to it, that's on that other team for not getting the job done, but this is an issue.

A simple fix would be no regular season games once the state tourney's over and don't start tourney ball till after the state finals. Basketball AAU programs don't start their tourneys til after the state finals so this same kind of thing doesn't happen.

I see in the Massillon paper, that Coach Heppe got her contract renewed for another year by the Perry BOE. Some may wonder why just one year. According to my sources, most schools only renew for a year when the coach is not employed by the school system.
Never the less, it is a well deserved contract. Sit back Coach Heppe and bask in it for a while. Same to her staff and the girls. State titles don't come easy.

Good for her. They were trying to run her out after last season and even had some disgruntled "fans" early on this year.

Way to prove them wrong Coach Heppe!!

Tough to convince a kid, or their parents, that their commitment should be to HS ball first when any possible scholarship opportunities are going to come from travel ball, not HS ball.

OHSAA could revise their rules but even then, in a situation like this, where Boardman was not in the league title race, Seniors had already graduated, and Boardman probably would have lost even with their best on the field.... why bother?

League games should be required to be finished before the playoffs are over.

1. YES

2. YES

These answers to your questions are based on different sets of circumstances surrounding Boardman High School and their softball program. I stand by what they chose to do even though I clearly understand how the Hoover program probably felt about it. Hard to judge people about their decisions made in life if you haven't been in those same shoes/situations. What would have Perry or Hoover have done?????????? Lots of summertime ball players on those two squads!

"Boardman probably would have lost even with their best on the field!" I assume you are basing this on Perry winning while being "no-hitted" the first time around, and winning on a "fluke" the second time around? I will be very interested to see who wins next year between these two teams. I believe that both teams have the majority of their main players coming back. Many in the Youngstown area believe that Boardman underachieved this year. The injury to their top pitcher early on obviously didn't get them off to the start they wanted both physically and mentally as a team.
