AKRON - It wasn't supposed to end like this.
Grove City's softball season, which almost didn't even take place until a school levy restored sports to the school, came to an abrupt close yesterday - one win short of a state title.
Massillon Perry beat the Greyhounds 10-0 in six innings, a game shortened by the mercy rule, in the Division I final at Firestone Stadium.
"They hit the ball," Grove City coach Ted Williams said. "Paige (Myers, senior pitcher) hasn't given up 10 hits in probably the last four games.
"You can't take anything away from them. They hit the ball."
Myers and Lindsey Lykins each had two of the Greyhounds' six hits.
It looked as if the Greyhounds (28-5) would jump in front quickly after Taryn Allmon's first-pitch triple to lead off the game. A ground ball to Perry shortstop Anna Fach, however, turned into a rare 6-2-5-4-3-6-1 double play.
"We made a little base-running mistake there," Williams said. "They made a big play, then turned around and scored three."
In the bottom of the inning, Perry (26-3) used an RBI single by Caitlyn Ferrell, a Grove City error and a passed ball to score three times; only one run was earned.
"We got the double play, and the momentum shifted," Perry coach Alison Heppe said. The Greyhounds left the bases loaded in the second, and the Panthers extended their lead to 4-0 in the bottom half on an RBI single by Shelbi Tilton.
Perry added four runs in the fifth on Sarah Samblanet's two-out, two-run single and on Grove City's third error of the game.
Perry ended the game an inning early on Maria Tayse's two-run homer.
"I'm just really proud of these young ladies," Heppe said. "Heart is something you can't teach. We made history for the program."
The Greyhounds and Panthers endured a lot of sitting around. The game was scheduled to start at 1 p.m., but weather delays pushed the start back to after 6 p.m.
