PAC 2023

Apparently there was a fight between parents at the PAC Track Meet after CVCA rang the bell of the host Fairless to celebrate their win. Another chapter in the annals of PAC history
We had an opponent do that at our home field after a rivalry football game. Yeah, that went over well.

What other football traditions do the PAC schools have besides ringing the victory bell....Lake has a victory bell, there is a big rock down by the field that has the name of Bill "Chief" Fetters the team touches before they enter the stadium during warm ups.....the one constant is when leaving a huddle with the whole team we say "Rock' em"....been saying that since 85......some teams would say that when leaving the huddle on the field...it is also used as good bye.

It's Friday and What Have We Learned This Week

Where to Begin? Pouring gas on the Ring of Fire!

Fairless.jpg

  • So CVCA Track & Field rang the Victory Bell in Navarre? As if this pairing of schools needed more energy on this recent rivalry?
  • Word was it was hardly a "fight" and more of an angry individual expressing displeasure over some teenage hijinks. Can't blame them.
  • CVCA travels to Fairless for the last time as a conference opponent on September 22nd. (The 2024 game will be at CVCA.) Fourth trip in Five years. Maybe the Royals just feel at home at Brideweser Stadium?

FOOTBALL POSTS PLEASE!!!

al-bundy-football-meme-728x728.jpeg

  • While it may not have been the greatest delivery, @Youngguy, we tip our collective caps to you
  • Three succinct words. And it drew out of the woodworks several of the Panthers’ finest from the late 70's - here's looking at you @TopCat, @SpeedSafety25 and @7Diamond - who gave us the inside scoop on the inner workings of the Manchester offensive huddle back in the day. Keep posting men!
  • As a side-note, @thePITman, I think you were being interfered with in that still shot of the play you posted above. No doubt. Should have been a flag ... but alas ... #PACtion
We Hardly Knew Ye
happy trails.jpg

  • Kyler Miraglia took to the interweb and let everyone know that his days on Northwest's reservation have come to a close
  • He'll transfer to Hoover for Senior Year and the Indians will have to reload for the second straight year arguably without their best player.
Everybody's favorite that nobody plays anymore

Dalton.jpg

  • Gratuitous Patrick Swayze Road House reference
  • But doesn't Road House ooze #PACtion?
  • Does anybody remember Road House? I digress
BUILD BACK BETTER | MAKE THE PAC GREAT AGAIN
construction.jpg

  • Great updates this week from Manchester on the new school and stadium project
  • Add that to the upgrades at Fairless and Triway and the PAC is about to look all brandy new and shiny!
What's for Dinner?

Park Street Pizza.jpg

  • Is this even a question? This Park Street Pizza pie looks delicious!
Happy Mothers Day to all the Football moms.

98 Days Til Kickoff! Have a good weekend everybody.

"Pain don't hurt", and neither does getting my not-pro-Washington High posts deleted from another thread.

or maybe this Roadhouse, one of my Dad's old watering holes?

Your Dad had great taste! I always had a good meal there! It is because of the not pro washington that I love PACtion...great conversation, humor, great pics and almost back to suspension helmets and high jump pits with foam rubber strips!

This apparently is a tradition among PAC schools. Back in the day when Manchester and Fairless were members of the old All Ohio Conference, Manchester did the same thing following a victory in 1981. What's old is new again.

I'm lighting up a cigar as I type this as I'm gonna be a real old timey timer here.

Year was 1986-87. I was a scrappy center/power forward at The Slaw that was really skinny but had all the tuffness. I pattered my game after Bill Laimbeer and the Pistons because, yes, I was that kind of knowledgeable but degenerate sports fan who was taught by my father to cheer for the bad guys when we watched the Iron Sheik in the old WWF.

But anyways us Mustangs played Lake in junior high basketball. I guarded Matt Christopher and I fouled out and he had to sit out a little after I bruised him up some. We lost to Lake 84-40 and were 0-13 on the year.

Fast forward to 91-92 and the same Tuslaw class was PACtion basketball champions with wins over "Tuckerrrrrr Pappassss!!!" (as the Manchester HS PA announcer always belted out in 91-92) and we won a very controversial game at The Pit when we stalled the clock half of the 4th quarter. Because we had the Bobby the Brain Heenan mentality. We pulled out all the stops. I think that game was 47-43 or something close to that. We scurried out of the mean suburban streets of Wooster and could not drive north on SR 226 & SR 3 fast enough after that game. We were like the bad guys winning the championship belt and we had to get out of the arena.

And we scored 95 points on Fairless down in Justus in a 95-73 swash buckling romp which was serenaded with slices of American cheese flung on the court in honor of Brewster Dairy. Fairless was gonna do "Farmers Week" in honor of Tuslaw? We did not forget. Oh we did not forget. The Fairless HS principal was pizzed and called ole Bob Horner at Tuslaw and said "tell those kids to knock it off" after it was over.

Our season ended in the district title game at Smithville with a loss to the eventual state champions Orrville Red Riders. It was a fun time. #PACtion.

Also in 91 a group of us John George's baklava eating hooligans was at PBTS watching Lake play Fostoria and pulling for Lake.

One week Dalton goes D7....the next my hometown team loses one of it's best players/kids. Yeeeeesh this is disappointing. He's such a great kid, almost every weekend he helped out by reffing at our youth flag football games...all the youth kids know Kyler and look up to him....he's going to be missed a lot more than just on Friday nights!

As far as the move itself - it's interesting and I don't know the logistics of it, to my knowledge they have not moved....not sure what the transfer rules are going to look like for him....Also - he's a really good running back, and maybe he's trying to get more exposure playing for a bigger school and playing in the Federal League...however, I'm just not sure that exposure is going to make a difference for the next level. He's really small - probably 5'7" 165-170 lbs. He's great in limited space and playing between the tackles but he lacks the burst to break the big one. I've never seen him score on a TD run longer than probably 30 yards. If he's getting run down from behind in PAC7 games...he's definitely getting run down against Fed opponents.

I don't mean for this to sound like sour grapes, or that I'm dogging on him....again, he's such a great kid and one heck of a football player and we will miss him dearly at Northwest. You're certainly no slouch with 1600 yards rushing and 22 TDs last season!!! Wish him nothing but the best!
Tiger fan here…(I come in peace) I know someone close to the family, they are not moving and have younger children entrenched in Northwest. Rumor has it he moved out and is moving in with a family that lives in North Canton district (Wackerly I believe?) so not sure how that all works exactly but again just what I’ve heard recently.

That would be the only way he can play for Hoover....they do not have open enrollment. He can say he lives at that address, but if not really checked out by Hoover...he can drive back and forth from Canal Fulton....but if Northwest would investigate....that is money they are losing.

I think that was Matt's last year playing basketball. His son Charlie just finished his sophomore year for us as a starter....inside linebacker like his dad....Matt only played one year at that position...Charlie had 137 tackles. That 91 state final was an amazing day...weather was mid 60's...the place was packed. They say there was 15,517....we all believe there was in the 20,000. First team we couldn't block man to man all year....Fostoria played nobody in the playoffs until us...their starting tailback had gotten hurt so they threw the ball all the time in the 3 previous playoff games...we picked their QB off 4 times...but they started Damon Moore at tailback that game as a soph...we had never seen him, didn't realize he was a future pro...between their fullback and him we had spread our defense out to much...Jeff says to this day he should have adjusted our defense earlier.

I love the cheese info...now that is funny. I only have one that comes close...we played Dresden Tri-Valley in 2007...they were 9-0 and we were 6-3..had to win that game and Mooney to beat Columbus Watterson to get in the playoffs. We get to their place, they have moved all the bleachers to the stadium they had just so some of our fans and our band would have seats...we are walking around and there is dead fish everywhere they are trying to clean up...our fans are complaining and I am laughing...bunch of people are asking why I am laughing and then I realized they don't get the humor....their fan base made a statement with the fish...we were a dead Lake...lol

I can confirm all of that. He is living with Wackerly.

BSO: I would warn you that a visit to the Elms Golf Course Club House will be an experience of Olde World Tuffness that you may never forget. The smell of lung darts and cheap American beer.

And get ready for many references to past football greats from both Massillon and Tuslaw.

You might even get a Lowell Klinefelter CCC story at The Elms.

For the full Slaw experience, you should consider Spud's in North Lawrence. Local sports and community history abounds at Spud's.

LOCAL

Spotlight on Lawrence Township

Local bar, eatery works to be part of community

Joe "Mustachio" Shaheen
Massillon Independent correspondent

Spud's Corner is located in Lawrence Township across from the North Lawrence Fire Department.

LAWRENCE TWP. In an era when the neighborhood bar and eatery seem to be giving way to franchise and chain operations, Spud's Corner is an anchor business in the village, providing a convenient gathering spot for township residents.

But in the eyes of owner Fred Neil, Spud's Corner is much more than a business. It is an integral part of the community, contributing to sports teams affiliated with the Tuslaw Local School District, providing a convenient lunch spot for personnel from the North Lawrence Fire Department (stationed across the street) and maintaining a good relationship with township police and administrators.

If Neil's name sounds familiar, it might be because he was a standout high school basketball player at Tuslaw High before excelling as head coach at neighboring Fairless High and later at Perry High School.

How good was Neil? He was the first Mustang to score 500 points in a season, averaging 23.5 a game in a 17-5 senior campaign in 1983 that saw the guard earn third-team All-Ohio honors while establishing the school's single-game mark with 46 points. He finished with a Tuslaw High record 1,168 career points.

Five years after Neil graduated from Tuslaw, his father opened Spud's Corner on Alabama Avenue NW.

"It has been in the family since then," Neil said. "Dad passed in 2011. My brother Alan ran the place until 2015 and then I took it over from him."
Make no mistake, Neil loves the Lawrence Township community. He is thankful for the way local residents have patronized his business.

"We have a lot of nice people who come in locally," Neil said. "We get people from North Lawrence and Orrville. We get some from Canton and Massillon as well. But, yes, there are a lot of regulars who are from the immediate area."

Eating and relaxing
Neil sees Spud's Corner as contributing to the feel and friendliness of the community by bringing people together to eat and relax.

"We try to provide a place for people to come and eat and enjoy themselves," Neil said. "Really, that's the whole idea behind it.

"We have a patio where they can play cornhole and socialize," he said. "Our regulars come in almost daily for lunch and dinner. This is a place for them to hang out, talk to their friends and just enjoy themselves."

If the community had a chamber of commerce, Neil would be its president. He has nothing but good things to say about Lawrence Township, beginning with the school system that he represented so well as a student-athlete almost 35 years ago.

"We have a great school system," Neil said. "Tuslaw Schools is really awesome."

The same goes for the local safety forces.

"The fire department here is first class," he continued. "We support them and they have always supported us.

"The police department, anytime we need them they are right there. And I think this is a good place for families."

The Tuslaw Mustang football and basketball programs are supported by donations and sponsorships from Spud's. That, says Neil, is implicit in owning a business in a community the size of Lawrence Township.

"In my opinion, it's definitely a big part of being a local business owner, taking part in the community and participating as much as is possible," he said.

"Plus I graduated from Tuslaw. I am an alumnus, so I think it is especially important to do that."
There have been some bumps in the road for Spud's, which is about to upgrade its water treatment process. Once it is complete, Neil will feel a lot better about the long-term future of his enterprise.

"We're actually putting in water treatment plant this fall which should help solidify the business as far as being long term," he said. "We just need to ... comply with what the EPA is asking us to do."

Neil said Spud's draws a good lunch crowd and regulars come for dinner too when they enjoy the burgers, and homemade choices on the menu on Tuesdays and Thursdays. If you happen by, Neil recommends the chicken wings rating them "excellent."

Shreve? Don't underestimate the tradition at Des Dutch Essenhaus:

I once TP'd their owner's property with 526 roles of TP, 2 roles of saran wrap, 2 boxes of Kleenexes, and a box of plastic forks.

I haven't been to Des Dutch Essenhaus in over ten years, but their breakfast buffet was always good. And their daughter is really good at tennis - now the head coach at Dennison.

Oh I am well aware of the smell..lol. I have played many a round there...golf and beer...or just beer...lol. Then of being Hartville trained I noticed all the Amish men smoking and drinking...am thinking rumspringa was going full tilt..lol. Mike (the owner who has went to the dark side) is of the orange evil empire...always saying the mighty Streaks should play the evil empire...I always said it would be a cold day in Hell when we would play them..well last November we had that cold day in hell. I will be playing golf there May 30th...so I will have to have my light sabre and force field ready!

I will mention Spuds to the players and see what shall happen....but am thinking I will be stranded on the evil empire

Just to think back in the day...toilet paper was priced accordingly...526 rolls at today's pricing...24 rolls (breaking down from the mega rolls which were at one time normal rolls) 526 divided by 24 equals would be approx 22 packages at approx $10.17 (Charmin Ultra Soft...only the best will do) would cost $224.00 to do that today...that would still buy a fair amount of beer...lol

Back when the "bulk quantity" Food 4 Less was in Massillon we TP'd someone with 96 rolls and wrapped his satellite dish. Also included in the chicanery was a bag of fresh Millersburg Ave SW horse dung. The horse dung could have represented the Bob Geiger era of Tuslaw football from 91-93.

Satellite dishes were crucial in the early 90's west Massillon township life; you got your non stop Atlanta Braves games with Skip Caray, WCW wrestling from the South on WTBS, and 2:00 PM Cubs games after school. Plus Bulls games and those scrappy New Jersey Nets were on WOR out of Secaucus, NJ. Howard Stern's late night show on WOR was fun back then. Fun but entirely wrong. Now Howard is old and lame.

I am not sure about the athletic abilities of this storied group....but here is a review of the golf courses played in the area so far this spring....

Zoar is in great shape...greens are smooth a little slow
Pleasant View...good shape, did have a lot of trees knocked down with the wind storms, still the best hot dogs and coneys!
Turkeyfoot..as always excellent, greens are fast and without the moisture from winter hard and a little bouncy
Wilkshire..best shape I have seen in awhile..greens comparable to Turkeyfoot
Legends...hard and dry fairways..great roll...rough is thick..you will have to look for your ball, it is that thick, greens are in great shape

Coming up will be Chenowith and the course that was the best shape to play all last year Chippewa, Elms will end the month of May
