NBA thread

Mike Conley is 36 and was always a facilitator as opposed to a scorer. May have had 1 or 2 seasons where he averaged right at or slightly above 20.

Minnesota wins and loses depending on what Edwards and Towns do. Towns has been largely atrocious this series, Edwards mostly just alright. Kyrie and Luka have been absolutely lights out, and it's why Dallas will advance to the Finals.
Kind of an old school point guard. Do you know that John Stockton, one of the best PG's ever, never averaged 20 PPG in any season. His top was 17PPG. Pretty good PG back in the day was Mark Jackson, his tops was 16 PPG, his career average was only 9.6. Maurice Cheeks, tops 15PPG, career ave. 11.
Actually I'd say in the playoffs, it many times is the "other" guys. The stars get theirs.

Any chance that guy gets to take a shot at anyone that has something to do with Ohio State he takes it even if it has zero do with the convo
I don't even really consider Conley a Buckeye, he was there for one year, and if they didn't go to the final four, probably would have forgotten it. Kind of like Kevin Durrant and Texas. Unless you follow that school, you forgot they were even there.

Yes...old school in the sense of running and facilitating the team, initiating the offense often through the post. Much of his career was in Memphis playing through Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol inside being it became entirely about pick and roll and shooting the 3.

Playoffs the other guys have to make shots, but getting good shots is dependent on stars making plays and making shots.

Why in the heck would JJ Redick want to coach, and even if he did, why the Lakers? Just a crapshow out there and until LeBron leaves, it will be.

Also, LeBron does a podcast with Redick, how is that even legal? Not that the NBA adheres to any rules. Has there ever been a worse commissioner of a sport than Adam Silver?

Thank God the Pistons fired their coach but they need a new owner. I haven’t really followed the team in years, they’ve been so bad they lost me as a fan.

You think it should be illegal for a player to do a podcast with his coach? Or with another consenting adult who might become his coach? It is a podcast - they talk about stuff. Who cares - it does not influence the outcome of games. What is wrong with that? More to the point, what is wrong with you?

Yes. In fact the NHL (Bettman) and the MLB (Manfred) both have worse guys right now.

Silver has raised the profile of the league, and built a lot on top of what David Stern built. I realize you think that Silver needs to outlaw podcasts or something, but in general he has been pretty good at growing the game.

Growing the game??? NBA ratings keep dropping and the game is run by the players. The NHL is fortunate to still be running. They nearly ran out of business years back but the die hards and smart owners put a strong salary cap on teams and has made the league functional. I don't watch any hockey, it's a nitch sport like golf and tennis. Those that like it, love it and that's fine.
Today's NBA narrative is JJ Redick being hired by the Lakers and Bronny's potential draft. To me, this just shows the NBA is so weak at the top. Owners are only worried about making money, the players don't care as much about winning as before. The only reason the NBA is popular is because the country loves basketball. Bronny James has no business taking a draft spot from another more deserving candidate. He played sparingly for a mediocre USC team. It's a joke how the NBA covers up things and fabricates others. A guy like Draymond Greene is still in the league?

You're right, I don't care. But it's a narrative and the Lakers are just like the Dallas Cowboys now. There is no interest by those teams to win, they just want to be in the limelight and they do things that keep them there.

The NBA Draft is coming up soon. As a UD Flyer fan, I'm interested in seeing who selects DaRon Holmes II. Most mock drafts have him going in the late first round. His defense is being questioned, as well concerns about the lack of top-notch competition that he faced in the Atlantic 10. His lack of elite size is also a concern. Will he slip to the second round?

I'm also interested in seeing where Purdue's Zach Edey goes. Mid first round?

Think you’re missing the forest for the trees here. Domestic ratings may be dropping, but domestically their strength is those in the mid-30s and younger…nearly matching if not exceeding the NFL in popularity with kids and young adults.

Abroad it generates by far the most revenue of any U.S. league, and will soon be pumping over a billion dollars a year in revenue abroad with rapid growth in big markets like China, India, and Brazil aside from Europe. The Lakers are by far the most popular pro sports team globally outside of the top few Spanish and English soccer teams. Between things they’ve deliberately been doing to penetrate these markets, develop youngsters abroad, and the increase in international stars in the league they have a sky high ceiling internationally with a fanbase that trends younger.

Ok then, I'll say this....globally isn't the US. and I don't care how big soccer is around the world, it's still not big here for most. Jokic and Luka do not do a thing for American fans.

After LeBron and Curry (big drop off) probably half of the 10-15 next most popular players are foreign.

After those two are gone Luka, Jokic, Giannis, Embiid, Gilgeous-Alexander, and Wembanyama are going to be carrying the league. Tatum is arguably the 3rd most popular American after the big 2 and plays for a major market franchise and the Finals ratings were in the toilet.

5 first round picks for Mikal Bridges? Are the Knicks insane?
The picks are stretched so far out it’s inevitable 1-2 selections will be high lottery when they get to rebuilding and have no assets. Sold the farm to try to win now for the next few years with all of the Villanova guys.

Yep. All or nothing. A top 7 of Randle, Brunson, Bridges, Anunoby, Hart, DiVencenzo, and Mitchell Robinson - none of whom are on massive contracts - puts them in an elite position if all can stay relatively healthy.

Thibs will have to do a much better job of managing minutes in what may be his last chance with a championship-caliber group.

Pretty excited my Sixers picked up Andre Drummond and Eric Gordon. We need more but to vets won't hurt the cause. Drummond gives us a legit backup Jo and he'll be able to start when Jo sits. Gordon is a veteran shooter and we need someone who can knock down open jumpers. Sixers appear in the mix for Paul George and that would be HUGE.

Sixers get Paul George. Also re-up with Kelly Oubre. So this team has suddenly become a contender in the East. It's unfortunate that Buddy Heild wasn't better last year or the Gordon signing wasn't necessary. I'd guess there was something between Buddy and Nick Nurse that didn't jive. Tobias Harris is off to Detroit.

So the Sixers as of today look like, Embiid, Maxey, Oubre, Paul George, Paul Reed, Andre Drummond and Eric Gordon. Nick Batum is gone. The heavy lifting is likely done, just need to add some support pieces. Also don't forget rookie Jarad McCain was drafted. He could have an immediate impact as a shooter.

Lakers and the James’ clan have been wildin’ this offseason. LeBron and Klutch Sports are running the franchise and have little to no interest in seriously trying to win unless it’s convenient to the brand.

LeBron had expressed interest in potentially taking a pay cut to help the Lakers improve the roster. Instead, he signs a two year player option max deal, keeping himself year to year and as a $50+ million salary as he enters a season that will see him hit age 40. Appears to be clearly setting the table to opt out every year for his last few years to make sure he makes the maximum possible each year.

The Lakers draft his kid towards the end of the 2nd round and give him a 4 year deal (team option 4th year) worth almost $8 million. In the grand scheme of a team’s payroll it isn’t much, but for a late 2nd round pick (especially one with a marginal college career) that’s a ton of guaranteed money on top of being guaranteed a 15 man roster spot. A ton of 2nd rounders especially as you get towards the bottom half of the round are draft and stash foreigners, two way contract guys, and guys with partial or fully non-guaranteed deals. Especially for his draft resume, man he got a very sweet nepotistic deal.

Didn’t even mention he got JJ his podcast buddy the Lakers job with no actual NBA or college coaching experience.

Thought it was funny seeing the Lakers rookie intro press conference yesterday. Dalton Knecht (consensus All-American and SEC POY) might have been the steal of a weak on paper draft falling to the Lakers at the 17th pick when he probably should have gone off the board 5-10 picks earlier. Older guy with an American dream like story starting at a JUCO and worked his way up to a low-major and then to Tennessee before being a first round pick to the Lakers…and at his introductory presser he was pretty much an afterthought with almost all the questions being directed towards the guy with a polar opposite story who’s draft credentials were being LeBron’s kid.

The NBA sadly loses credibility by the day. Leadership, at the top with Adam Silver are so scared to rein in any players. Owners don't care about winning, they are making money regardless. LeBron has been known for having a great basketball IQ. Well, in terms of running a franchise, his IQ is that of an ant. Why would a guy in his position, with more money than he or his kids would ever need, sign a max option? Moreover, why not just sign Brony as a FA then you can save some cap money to go get talent to help you win? I don't know how people can take this league seriously anymore.

It's really sad how all this has gone down. And it just is amazing to me that a guy like LeBron, as the kid's father, would set him up to fail like this. That presser and all the attention makes it look like Bronny is going to go right in the rotation? He's G league bench talent at best. What an awful prescient to set.

Granted what I saw was “online” but the article said our guys were favored by 43 points. I know the rest of the world had caught, as evidence from the Euro boys having a field day in the league, but the USA boys need to step their game up.

The USA continues to underwhelm in international/FIBA play despite tremendously outclassing everyone else in talent. Yes everyone else has gotten and continues to get better, but we seem to struggle at times to take international play seriously on top of struggling to play team ball within a framework that’s needed to succeed in international play.
