General NFL Chat

I noticed it last week but not this week...maybe I was outta the room the few times.

It wasn't bad last week...just the point of it all when it used to be commercial free....

The NFL is going down a bad path. They keep pushing games to non traditional networks. My guess is the games yesterday have very poor ratings. First of all Christmas day ( are you kidding me) and on Netflix? Makes no sense at all.

It's a part of a first step to farming out all games to streaming sites. We'll soon have to pay each time we want to see a game in our homes.

That will be an awful move by anyone associated with the NFL. Not sure how anyone would feel this is a good idea.

Netflix is estimating 35 million people tuned in for the Chiefs/Steelers game.

I guessing you will be way off regarding the ratings.

* Will the NFL eventually go to some form of paying for each game - quite possibly to most likely.
* Will it hurt ratings at first - probably.
* Will the rating ever go back up - probably.

Right now the NFL is king, there is no close 2nd. Things will eventually change. In 1900 the two most popular sports in America was Boxing & Horse Racing.

And there was no TV. Baseball used to be king, they got greedy and didn't evolve. Now they are making up silly rule changes and ticking off the long time true fan. The sport should stand by itself, don't manipulate sports for public consumption.

The NFL cares more about the money they make from the broadcasting entity than they do about ratings.

Also, it was a perfect time for it from a logistics perspective as the usual networks would have been pressed by the quicky turnaround for a Wednesday game.

I believe Baseball’s decline was a couple of things: the constant strikes in the 1980’s/90’s and just the pace of the game. People’s time became more important to them, they simply did not have 2:45 to spend 5 nights a week watching a baseball game. Just too slow of a pace.

Sports have and should evolve. Football has gone from 3 yards & a cloud of dust to pass happy. Basketball has gone from 5 passes before we take a shot to mostly 3’s and as you said baseball has recently tried to adjust.

Official numbers. For comparison, the biggest CBS games of recent memory are in the 28-29 million range.

as the saying goes, this didn't age well. They crushed it. 25 million. I didn't know that many people were still awake after all that food and rush.

Three plays in 1:30 minutes AND called a timeout. Bears not trying to win kudt get a thing 50+ yard FG.

Brutal to watch.

All 3 passes did not have a receiver within 15 yards of the ball.

Bears going for it because 58 yard FG is too far.

At least I only watched the last half of the fourth quarter. I feel sorry for anyone that watched the whole game.

That's impressive, although I don't know that I believe all the social media posts. I mean the entities themselves are proclaiming these numbers, there's really no way to validate them. It's not like the old Neilson ratings. I wonder what the ratings were for movies like Home Alone and Elf? They are on ALL the time this month.

Ok, I'll agree with you, but only to a degree. No one seems to care about football games who have review after review and drag out the last 3 minutes to 45 minutes of actual time. Basketball is even worse now that we are reviewing frame by frame to see if the ball grazed the fingertip of a player?? To me that's more about building drama and not sports. I would like to see a very limited use of instant replay. We have always had to live with the calls of officials, now not only do we have highly paid officials, we spend millions on review equipment to look at close calls that many times have no bearing on the game. Part of sports, part of life is living with decisions made by others. We just can't live with that.

As far as baseball. People who don't know or understand the game doesn't appreciate the mental aspects and the "game within the game" of baseball. Yes, I agree players and pitchers should not take 30-45 seconds between pitches, but that was controllable by the umpires, who chose not to do anything about it. Now we have the goofy pitch clock which makes no sense. Odd to me that we always want more for less, but it baseball games people will pay alot of money for tickets and want the game to get over faster so they can go home??

Note, in football, it's about winning. If a team runs the ball successfully, they will run the ball and their fans will be perfectly happy with that. I'd like to see this tried in basketball. Make a basket worth 3 points, and one behind the line 4 points. I think that would drastically change the strategy. NBA and college 3 point shooting percentages are not good, and yet the analytics say that it's a good option. Let's lower that option, make the shot only worth it for the good shooters.

Those are you opinions and I’d guess the way the games were played when you were a kid probably helped form them. All 3 sports have changed drastically, some for the good & some for the worse. When you were a kid there was probably someone your current age saying the _____ game is terrible. Football players do not play both ways and they wear that helmet. Basketball is just run & gun and they jump when taking a shot. Baseball probably didn’t look too much different to them.

Regarding The game within a game for baseball….yea it’s interesting but at its pace it is child’s play compared to what a qb has to decifer presnap on most plays.

I have some friends who quit watching most sports except OSU football and they gripe about that. Hey, it’s their choice but the games will go on.

Christmas games = great idea.

Netflix = not so much.

But reas where ratings slightly off from when they are on network.and with the Netflix contract it's a sum positive for.them financially.

I don't and won't get.a streaming service for gam3s.. I don't miss TNF or when they had a.games on The Cock.
Sucked on Christmas it was on NF as.Xmas is by far the worst.TV day.of.the year.
I.have the day free and it was a Roku day fo.sho.

So...I agree it's not a good.path.for.many Americans but it's all.about the Benjamin's

We've known for years the NFL and the networks are all about money.

I don't necessarily have an issue with Christmas day games, although it's really a sad commentary on our society in general that not only does the NFL have the gall to put games on the one day of the year that should be designated for family and religion, but we have so many people tuning in, probably adjusting schedules and / or missing other things, but that's water under the bridge.

My issue is Wednesday. To make 4 teams play 3 games in 11 days is just insane. But I'll hold the NFLPA accountable too, because they had to stamp their blessing on this to make it happen.

No different than Thursday night games...all 4 those teams played the Saturday before I believe.

As for the Holiday....nit everyone celebrates Christmas, and many who do also don't have anything on Christmas Day so it's up to each their own to decide to.watch or.not

Yes, the league manipulated the schedule to squeeze another day off in between, so they had 6 days in between the first two and 5 between the last one. I guess my main point is we don't NEED football on Christmas day. We'll survive a holiday without football.
