Ryan Bergert is big-league bound.
The GlenOak High School baseball alum has been called up by the
San Diego Padres, the club announced Friday.
Bergert, a right-handed pitcher, was recalled from Triple-A El Paso. He is rated the
No. 21 prospect for the Padres by MLB.com.
The 25-year-old Bergert is the fourth Stark County native on a Major League Baseball roster. Dillon Dingler is with the
Detroit Tigers and his former Jackson High School teammate Kyle Nicolas is with the
Pittsburgh Pirates. Marlington alum Zach Dezenzo is with the Houston Astros.
Bergert, who was 0-1 with a 5.16 ERA in five starts with El Paso this season, will join the Padres bullpen and likely will pitch in long relief. After not pitching Friday night, he could make his MLB debut Saturday when the Padres host the Tampa Bay Rays.
A 2018 GlenOak graduate, Bergert went 4-1 with a 3.19 ERA during his
senior season with the Golden Eagles. He struck out 66 batters in 37⅓ innings, earning first-team honors for All-Federal League and Repository All-Stark County.
Bergert went 4-1 with a 2.30 ERA in 21 career appearances in two seasons at West Virginia University before missing a year because of elbow surgery. He was drafted in the sixth round (190th overall) in 2021 by the Padres, becoming the first GlenOak product selected in the MLB Draft since Allen Tyson in 1987. Bergert would be the first GlenOak alum to appear in an MLB game.
In 82 career minor league appearances, including 75 starts, Bergert was 13-25 with a 4.33 ERA and 380 strikeouts in 340⅔ innings.
Padres No. 5 starter Kyle Hall was demoted to El Paso on Thursday, opening a spot for Bergert's promotion.
