Dover football 2025

I heard 2 on staff 2 from outside the program have applied. With the front runner being on staff..

I will say this. Being around the Program for more then 40 years that a local home town guy has never worked. I don’t think anyone on staff is deserving. This program needs a new fresh set of eyes. The Defensive has been broken for years.

They don’t hit in practice anymore and it shows. They need someone young to come in with new schemes offense and defense new ideas and weight training, speed and agility. Ifft did a great job. But I would say the last 5-7 years he was going through the motion not living eat drinking Football like he once did.

It’s time to someone young from outside the program that can build on the talent that’s coming. And fix the youth and be involved in the middle school. Getting more coaches on staff in 7th 8th grades.

I wonder other than the 4 who else put In? I’ve not heard of anyone other than the 4 that put in for sure.

in house
Home town guy
in house
outsider

If that’s the only 4 that put in. I go with the Outsider 100% didn’t wanna put names to screw up the interviews.

Exactly what I heard about those 4 and only 4. But I did hear the outsider had a real good chance. Totally agree with everything you said too

WB graduates 90% of there starters Great job running from Iv
West Branch returns a first-team All-Ohio QB that accounted for 44 touchdowns, a 6-7, 230-pound D1 tight end, several talented two-way linemen and a JV team moving up that went 10-0, pitched seven shutouts and outscored its opponents, 404-41. Believe me, West Branch will be really good again.

If what is mentioned is true, I’m pretty surprised no one from the surrounding area applied. Not a single person from Stark, Wayne, Holmes, Muskingum counties, let alone elsewhere in T-county.

I'm really surprised by the low number of applicants if all these numbers are true. You would think the Dover job would be fairly enticing.

There could be more but that’s what I was told. The outsider would be a huge HIRE!! And the Kirkland coach of course Dover would love him but I’ve not heard his name on the list. Be great if it was.

Again I just want reiterate there is no connection between LaVerde and Dover. Just mentioning that he was an out of state hire that worked haha

I wouldn't discredit in house candidates. If they hire one of them, it doesn't mean that they are going to be a carbon copy of the previous coach.

Beware the flashy college coach hire. I know who you might be referencing. They don't always pan out the way people think. HS ball is a different animal. Not saying this coach wouldn't be successful, as I believe his dad was a successful HS coach if I'm not mistaken.

I am under the impression that they have several quality candidates. Dover is in good shape because of that.

Also, you gotta take into consideration what jobs they have available if a candidate needed to be hired and what licensure said candidates have. Maybe it's a coach in the private sector which makes it easier if they don't have to hire them in house.

Plum teaching jobs are open including coach iffts position of dean of students 4 others are resigning and at least 2 more are expected to resign at the first of year. O panic as the resignations have to do with rule changes in retirement

I would say NO to anyone on staff if I was the one hiring. The defense has been terrible for a very long time. That the side of the ball. If you’re a defensive minded coach and that side of the ball is garbage year after year how are you going to be in charge of the whole team. Just because someone is good in sport does not make them a good coach. Kids and parents don’t think anyone on staff is ready yet.

I’m not sure if you’re right about the college coach. The one I know that put in his dad didn’t coach. Maybe there is two college guys that put in for it. I think there might be a few more that put in for it but I have no idea who they are. We all should know very soon once interviews start.

I’m sure Dover will hire someone on staff. Because that will be the easy for them to do. It’s not about resumes this day and age at Dover. It’s about who u know and if you’re connected to the rank and file.

Possibly 2 college coaches applied then. But the one I was told his dad was a high school coach and is actually in the coaches hall of fame.

I'm new to the forum, but I have been a Dover sports fan for quite a while. Wayne County resident & went to school in Wayne County, however, I have a lot of family that is located in T-County. I have always found it fun to badger my family members that are NP alums. Every year we try to attend a hand full of Dover games at Crater Stadium & I love that atmosphere. Makes it somewhat easier now that the Tornadoes will be coming up and playing Wooster.

As the coaching search has been closed, I would find it hard to believe if Zach Gardner didn't make a run at the job. He had a good run at West Holmes. 3-time OCC Coach of the year and taking the Knights to 3 straight OCC titles. He turned that program around once he got there. I could be wrong, but that could be a possible candidate for the job as well.

He put in I just don’t see him getting it. Time will tell tho.

Gotcha. It's always a tough decision to hire a "disctrict" guy or not. I guess in some ways, it would depend on the district. I've seen it work in some school districts where they've had coaches that have been true to the program for years and hire staff the same way and it works. But, I have also seen the beneift of getting a fresh pair of eyes and a new set of standards that can really turn a team around as well. Whoever they choose, I hope that it works well for them.
I think Dover in the OCC is a good fit too, I think they will do well. I look forward to seeing how everything shakes out.

In my opinion, I think he's the best choice, but obviously I do not know the qualifications of the other candidates. He is a proven commodity, multiple conference titles, and a state semi final appearance. To make things even more impressive, he has had all of his success at 2 schools which were historically not the best. Sandy Valley would consider it a great season if they won 4 games. He took them to the playoffs. West Holmes was always stuck at below or at average, he took them a game away from the finals.

Would like to know the circumstances of Gardners dismissal and would be curious how well WH would have done without SWD, did he make WH really good or did WH make him really good. They also had some excellent talent going thru the program at the same time
He still teaches there so can't be too bad.

Why did they let him go?

From what I have heard, he was a bit too "old school" for some parents, i.e. being a bit too loud when correcting kids, grabbing their facemasks, etc.
Oh boo hoo. Parents have made kids soft these days when they played in that day when that went on. That's how it was when I was in school. But I guess it's a different time we're in. Can't do those things anymore. I just hope we get a good coach.

I was about to say something similar. When my son played for Coach Ifft in 2004. Coach Ifft was still grabbing face masks and yelling a good bit and I didn't have an issue with him doing that to my son. But hey, football at all levels is getting softer every year and I guess that includes possibly hurting your child's feelings. You wonder why society as a whole is where it is today!

I heard directly from coach Ifft say he changed his approach simply because kids no longer respond to the old school way and he had some very successful teams with the new approach. Discipline is always needed but getting yanked around by the facemask and screamed at in public doesn’t work like it use to. I would be cautious about hiring someone too old school.

Times have def changed and unfortunately, looks like they're going to contiue to change. The old school ways are going out the window and the days of the soft approach and participation trophies are among us.
I'm personally a fan of the old school way. I remember playing pee-wee football as a kid & even being that young playing pee-wee, we were getting pulled around by our facemasks. Didn't seem to bother any of us, it more motivated us than anything. Looking back now though, maybe pee-wee was too young to be doing that type of stuff.
I coached at my alma mater a for a few years and I used the old school approach, but there is def a line that you have to toe. Knowing that all athletes don't respond the same way. Some athletes respond to that old school approach and it motivates them. Others, I had to be more relaxed with my coaching style to get through to them and motivate them.

Parents are raising sheep. They want to coddle them thru any adversity. Which kind of been going that way for 15-20 years. We now are seeing a societal meltdown thanks to it.

Yeah, everyone get's offended by every little thing now. That doesn't help coaches or teachers for that matter.
