CHL 2024/2025 preview/season thread

Yes, it's spring, but over the years, Lacrosse has become the focus and more kids are opting to play that as their sport and not football. Not every kid is a multisport athlete and as you get older, and better, kids do specialize.
I understand but in a school the size of Mariemont you’d better have two sport athletes.

100%

If I'm not mistaken, the Little Cards program also ran the option and defense that the HS team ran. By the time these kids got to CHS, they had been running the same stuff for years. Whether or not that part is 100% true, I don't know, but I did spend 3 years at Colerain HS coaching and this is what was relayed to me during my time there.
I never coached in the system but did grow up in and play in it for high school. The youth program when I was young was the Northside K of C Rebels which in some way, shape, or form morphed into the Little Cards. But what you described was always my understanding from the offense and defensive schemes. I believe they did the same for the middle school programs at Colerain and White Oak?

1 day from GAME DAY!!!!
Here is my take on wk1 in the CHL

Madeira @ Batavia -Batavia (3-7 last year) SHOULD be improved from last year. Harris will replace Roller @ QB (Harris was a WR in 2023 good athlete) Madeira replaces Breidenbach (2500yds and 36 TDS) and WR #1 Thiele (800yds 11 TD). I am going to say Madeira pulls this one out in a closer , higher scoring game. 27-20

Belmont @ Deer Park- Belmont (1-8 last year) runs a Version of the WingT I believe? DP will have to stay disciplined in order to keep the running game slowed. a new coach PLUS Replacing Parsons/Denson and Armor will be a tall task for DP. I think DP can scratch out wk1 with a W though. 18-12

Mariemont @ Oakwood - oakwood (4-7 last year) lost to MM by 3. That was a MM team with Tully at QB (MM was a totally different team with Tully on the field) Both teams will have new QB's AND OW best athlete Wilson is gone. My heart tells me MM can pull it out but my gut is telling me OW at home wins in a close on. 22-20

Indian Hill @ Roger Bacon - Bacon (6-5 last year) RB got the best of IH wk 1 (with no Devlin) 33-20. Even with Changing at QB , Bacon is going to get a big Dose of Devlin! IH takes this one by 2 scores. 34-20

Talawanda @ Taylor - Talawanda (2-8 last year) Does return leach (1100yds 9TD pass and 600yds 8 TD rush) Taylors D is much improved from last year and returns everyone minus their QB. I see this one being close w/ taylor going to the rush game more w/ Ferguson and Lehman! Taylor takes it 20-13

Reading @ Woodward- Woodward (1-9 last year) Reading rolls this one not much to say 38-12

Ross @ Wyoming- Ross (3-7 last year) Lost to the cowboys in a close one 16-12 last year. Going to be the Hancock show this year. I watched Ross Scrimmage taylor , Taylors D held Ross scoreless in the 1st 2 and half quarters. I think Wyoming gets this one. 24-13

Finneytown @ CNE - CNE (3-7 last year) Siakam will be a tough kid to replace. CNE leading rusher / QB returns. This one will be tough for FT.
I want to say they can pull it out. But not very deep and replacing their best player on offense. CNE wins 24-12

And I'm sure some of them are. But the 1 sport kids walking the halls that would have opted to be football players in the 90's are now opting for Lacrosse. Considering the success of their program, those kids are pretty good athletes. Kids aren't growing up in that community wanting to necessarily play football anymore.

I think someone said Bacon returns majority of their starters from last year and if that's the case, I think that game is a toss-up but I do feel like Bacon took advantage of an IH team still trying to find it's way last year and if they played again in the playoffs, IH would have beat them.

Pretty spot on re everything else imo.

You and I are on the same page with the importance of the youth program and how impactful and beneficial it was to Kerry Coombs success at Colerain. When Coombs was first hired at Colerain, he recognized that, helped organize or 'morphed' the youth program into a cohesive program, and guys coaching in the program ran his schemes. The Little Cards program was all on the same boat, rowing the same direction. If I was a new HC at a program, I'd start at the youth program before I put my hands on anything HS related. Your program is YOUR program, and that's K-12. IMO, you can't start building it at 7th grade with a shaky foundation.

Bacon starting QB was a soph (1400yds 20 TD 9 int)

Bacon starting HB was a Junior (650yds 6 TD)

Bacon leading rec'r back (300yds 3 TD)

On D side their top 4 leading tacklers were all seniors. that's the aspect of the game that comes in more key than offense IMO
Devlin is a different build kid. I think maybe even better than Hester

IH/Wyoming non conf schedules' are pretty similar by the #'s (CHL + playoffs only bc Devlin only had 8 carries the 1st 3 weeks)

Devlin #'s freshmen year
1436 rush yds in 9 games (160 yds avg ) 16 TD

Hester #'s as a soph (hester didnt play Varsity his Freshmen year) this is covid year so ** next to them
1121 yds in 10 games (112 yds avg) 17 TD

Hester #'s as a Junior (without the 1st 3 non conf games)
1922 yds in 10 games (192 avg) 27 TD

Devlin is on track to have "hester like" #'s. Again these are a tad skeewed only b/c Devlin didnt play the 1st 3 wks of his freshmen year and Hesters #'s are based off soph/Junioryears (one of which was Covid.)

My hole point of this is Devlin is a BIG difference maker and it was evident in weeks 4-10 last year (alter had IH's # but he was a freshmen)

IH + A healthy Devlin = LOOONG night for Bacon's D IMO

IH also has a 6'3 210 dual threat QB as well so you cannot just key on Daniel.

Per chlsports.com site Hester did play varsity as a freshman and had 400 yards rushing. He was also listed at a whopping 5'7 and 150 pounds as a freshman. His sophomore year, when he had 1121 yards rushing, was the shortened (8 regular seasons games + 2 playoff games) COVID season.

The fact that Mariemont has a solid soccer team every year doesn't help. Obviously football and soccer pull different types of athletes, but at some point a handful of kids of to choose between soccer and football. Seems like they're picking soccer.

That's even better to my point that devlin is him.

I'll have to dig up BUT I don't know when the last time Taylor had more rushing yds in a game than passing ??

Last night 142 pass / 193 rush

Wk 2 looks like a HOT on both weather and on the field!

DP vs Shroder- Deer Park comes off a big win! Shoder come off a 30+ pt win over norwood (norwood must be BAD b/c Shroder was 3-7 last year)
I think DP can take this game by 2 scores. 34-20

IH vs Northwest- Devlan left devlan right, then watch out he may chuck one down field too. NW was shutout by Wilmington (who was 8-3 last year)
IH Takes this one by a decent margin. 28-10

Madeira vs Shawnee - I dont know much about Shawnee this year. I know they were legit last year. I do know Batavia is generally not very good and madeira snuck by with a 26-21 W. (Batavia gained 400+ yds of offense on Mad as well) Shawnee by a tuddy. 21-14

Reading vs Batavia- Batavia wont out gain Reading like they did madeira. Seems like Reading threw it more than normal last week Hess w/12 attepts and 2 td passes. reading by 3 TD 28-7

Taylor vs L'burg (battle of RT 50) Taylor coming off a W over Talawanda. L'burg coming off a L from East Central. Last years match up was a good one. (10-7 L'burg) Taylors D is VERY MUCH improved. they are pretty big up front and have more weapons than ever before. I think its another lower scoring close one. Taylor Takes is 17-13

Wyoming vs Monroe - Wyoming opened with a 28-14 W over ross. Hancock w/200+ yds on the ground. Monroe won 35-0 over goshen. (threw for 260 and ran for 150) Last year Wyoming took this match up 13-0. I think it will be Wyoming on top again , but it will be some points scored.
28-24 cowboys

Finneytown vs SBEP- FT coming off a close L to CNE. I really thought that was a "must win" for FT to have a 2-3 win season. BUT SBEP will run all over FT IMO. Harris had 160 yds for SBEP in their win last week. (same kid ran for 175 and 3 TD last year vs FT) SBEP rolls FT 28-6

Mariemont vs Norwood. Norwood is horrible this year and not even MM can screw it up I don't think. MM wins big 34-13

DP vs Shroder- DP by 23... ugly game.

IH vs Northwest- IH by 40+. NW is about as bad as it gets. Devlin will have 250+yds.

Madeira vs Shawnee - this Madeira team is bad and people do not know it. Shawnee by 30+.

Reading vs Batavia- Reading by 30+.

Taylor vs L'burg (battle of RT 50) - Taylor gets a big time win. The annual "hype train" mentioned gets rolling. Taylor by 7.

Wyoming vs Monroe - Wyoming does not lose these types of games. WYO by 10.

Finneytown vs SBEP- SB by 17.

Mariemont vs Norwood. MM is good enough here. MM by 17.

Madeira vs Shawnee - this Madeira team is bad and people do not know it. Shawnee by 30+.
I did some digging on Shawnee.
TJ meeks for them last year was a STUD. 2200+ rush yds and 33 TD

NO TJ meeks and they are as totally different team. They beat D2 Stebbins last year 41-0 this year they lost 35-34

I dont know if this increases Mad. shot or not. But this isnt the same team as last year either for shawnee. (meeks had 200yds and 2 TD)

DP vs Shroder- DP by 23... ugly game.

You are the only one that mentions Taylor.
