CHL 2024/2025 preview/season thread

Why are Mariemont and Wyoming playing on a Thursday this year?
Wyoming has had Thursday games before to avoid Friday play on certain fall Jewish holidays like Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur as there is a fairly substantial Jewish population in the school district (there is a Jewish temple in the city limits of Wyoming).

Yom Kippur starts on Friday, October 11th so that could be why? But then again their game against Deer Park the week before is on the last day of Rosh Hashanah so I could be totally off and maybe it's so the game against Mariemont could be on TV or something?

Not that small this year. Really big freshman class.
every year just about every school starts about with a "big" freshmen class.

Make mental note on how many freshmen are on there now and save this this post for same time frame in 2028 that # will be cut in half.

Yep. They had a huge Sr. class 2 years ago that diminished the roster last year, but the Freshman class this year is really large and good from what I've been told.
And the current senior class is small, but multiple players who've been starting on one or both sides of the ball or on special teams since freshman/sophomore years.

That is very likely over 4 years. But with a small(er) crop of upperclassmen ahead of them there will be opportunities for the good ones to play early and develop over multiple years.

Just b/c i am bored.

last year CHL Non conf schedule record was 15-9 Wyoming being the only 3-0 team. IH and Taylor going 1-2. everyone else was 2-1

this year games are as follows

DP vs Belmont , Shroder, Norwood.
potential to go 2-1 or even 3-0 for DP. SHroder was 3-6 last season and norwood 1-9

FT vs CNE , SBEP and Lockland (NC opp record 16-14)
Potential to go 2-1 CNE 3-7, lockland 5-5, SBEP 8-2

IH vs RB, NW and Harrison (NC opp record 14-16)
I think they go 3-0...
RB 6-4 , NW 1-9 , Harrison 7-3

MAD- chance to go 2-1 (NC opp record 20-10)
Batavia 3-7 , Shawnee 9-1 , Purcell 8-2

MM- Chance to go 2-1 (NC opp record 14-16)
Oakwood 4-6 , Norwood 1-9 , Williamsburg 9-1

Reading - Chance to go 3-0 (NC opp record 6-24)
Woodward 1-9 , Aiken 2-8 , Batavia 3-7

Taylor - Chance to go 2-1 (11-19)
Talawanda 2-8 , L'burg 8-2, Woodward 1-9

Wyoming - chance to go 3-0 (11-19)
Ross 3-7 , monroe 2-8 , bethel tate 6-4

So by record Madeira would have the toughest NON conference schedule and Reading has the weakest.
Still a head scratcher why Wyoming is playing monroe/BT? When do they beef up their schedule?

Monroe was a 7-5 higher division (II or III) playoff team in 2022 that that got hit hard by injuries in 2023. This is the second year of the series that was arranged against a quality higher division opponent. Bethel-Tate was a late add to fill a hole in Wyoming's schedule, and Wyoming had to agree to play at BT, giving Wyoming 6 regular season road games this year. BT moved up to DIV this year based on enrollment. And if you're a good DII or DIII school the past few years, do you want to schedule Wyoming? What's the risk/reward with how the playoff point system works?

Here's what we have so far for CHL rosters on the league page:

Deer Park: 38 players (14 Seniors)
Finneytown: 27 players (6 Seniors)
Indian Hill: 45 players (9 Seniors)
Madeira: 46 players (9 Seniors)
Mariemont: 54 players (13 Seniors)
Reading: 59 players (16 Seniors)
Taylor: 54 players (12 Seniors | 20 Freshmen!)
Wyoming: 52 players (9 Seniors | 23 Freshmen!)

Are there any updates on scrimmages that have taken place??
I was just getting ready to comment! This years thread is def off to a slow start!

Taylor scrimmaged SBEP (who had one of the city's top rushers Demico Harris 1750yds and 21TD)
If you were "keeping score" Taylor scored 3-4 TD total SBEP 1-2 for Varsity . JV were 2-3 a piece

On SBEP 2nd play on O they threw a pick 6 to Grant Ferguson of Taylor.

Being someone who watched all 10 of Taylors games last year and being someone who try's to stay as honest/realistic as possible, Taylors D is MUCH improved. Offensively Soph Charlie Kantz took about 80% of the snaps. He needs way more seat time but it looks like early indications are that he's being given the keys to the program!

Taylor will host Ross this Thursday.

Yes , Taylor's incoming freshmen class has a TON of kids whom play sports! they were very competitive in Football and basketball on the boys side of things. I counted 51 dressed in pads on Friday and a few that looked to be out for what ever reason.

Anyone know if Madeira is scrimmaging McNick this week? Seems recently they have played in the 2nd scrimmage.

McNick 3 Tds to Madeira 0. McNick starters play one half, Madeira pulled their guys in the second series of 3rd Q I believe. I thought Madeira played well. McNick going to have to step it up to be competitive at Stuebenville next week.

Varsity (3 qtrs)
Ross 14
Taylor 0

Ross w/1 penalty in 36 minutes of football. Def. The most improved and discipline 3-7 team I've seen in my life! (Sense the sarcasm)

Taylor had 3 TD's called back.

Jv
Ross 7
Taylor 0

Both d's played well in the 1st half.

Taylor's offense has to get going.

Heard through the grape vine IH over Turpin 21-10
IH looked pretty good on D.
Young on both sides lots of Soph/jun in Key spots for IH

CHL Week One: Laughably weak scheduling.

Madeira @ Batavia: Madeira by 7. Batavia is not very good but Madeira is less bad.
Belmont @ Deer Park: Deer Park by a lot. Belmont one of worst teams in Ohio.
Mariemont @ Oakwood: Oakwood by 17. This is a terrible Mariemont team.
Indian Hill @ Roger Bacon: IH by 23. Too much Daniel.
Talawanda @ Taylor: Taylor by 10. Taylor "Hype Train" seems to get rolling this time each year.
Reading @ Woodward: Reading by 30+. Another poor opponent.
Ross @ Wyoming: Wyoming by 10. Should be a good game.
Finneytown @ CNE: No pick. Drafting for one of worst games in Ohio all season.

CHL scheduled some of the worst teams in Ohio for Week One. Roger Bacon the only opponent with a winning record (6-5) of all opponents from last season and some of these teams are just horrible. Wyoming and IH games are probably worth watching.

IH lost to RB 33-20 last year and I thought that IH team was a little better than this one. Daniel is special but RB returns most of their weapons on offense. Should be a good game. I think Madeira beats Batavia by more than 10. And agree with all the rest except I will take Finneytown by 6. CNE is really bad.

I think Indian Hill repeats this year, with Wyoming finishing 2nd.

Reading, Taylor and Madeira seem to be in the second tier of teams.

Mariemont, Deer Park, Finneytown falling in the final tier.

Nothing here really surprising, besides the gradual free fall of Mariemont. A team that has been in the 3rd-5th range for a decade is going to have their third pretty bad season in a row. No Charlie Tully to "save" them this year.
This has been happening in steps and it coincides with the rise of Lacrosse at Mariemont. In the 90's, Mariemont was a powerhouse and state runner up. Starting in the 2000's their program has trended in the wrong direction. A good team 'here', maybe a very good team 'there' but the trajectory of that program has been a steady fall. I'm not sure when lacrosse started but it would have been Late 90's/Early 2000's. I believe that has become the main sport for that school. Their boy's and girl's teams are both very good.

5 of those losses were to Wyoming, who lost what, one CHL game in that timeframe?

I personally would love to see another CHL team rise to regional and maybe state prominence at the small school level-especially one that is not as well resourced as say Wyoming, Indian Hill etc. Just too many factors in play that make the situations different and maybe not as realistic than what makes many of the MAC schools of similar size up north so successful year in and year out.
100%

If I'm not mistaken, the Little Cards program also ran the option and defense that the HS team ran. By the time these kids got to CHS, they had been running the same stuff for years. Whether or not that part is 100% true, I don't know, but I did spend 3 years at Colerain HS coaching and this is what was relayed to me during my time there.

I mean , lets not get it twisted DP isnt the "bottom of the barrel" in the CHL

3-8
5-5
4-8
4-3 ** covid
6-4
-----
24-28 in the past 5 years isn't HORRIBLE.
You can add a 7-4 year under that 6-4 year. They were a legitimate playoff team as the 8 seed and lost to Coldwater.

Is lacrosse played in the Fall? Thought it was a Spring sport in Ohio.

For a lot of these teams, you have to schedule like they did. Who else do you expect DP, FT, Mariemont to play? I think Talawanda, Batavia, Bacon, and Ross are reasonable opponents as well for who's playing them. The only opponent that sticks out to me as a head scratcher is Woodward but it's not like Reading is playing MVCA.

Yes, it's spring, but over the years, Lacrosse has become the focus and more kids are opting to play that as their sport and not football. Not every kid is a multisport athlete and as you get older, and better, kids do specialize.

So you just named the 2 best football schools in the league.
Of course they are going to play "decent" competition

I think Wyoming beats Ross by 2+ TD's this year...
IH rolls bacon IMO....

who else do you expect the other schools to play?
