Its that time of year!

23-24 was exciting to say the least! We saw a LONG standing CHL win streak snapped, saw a new CHL champion and saw LOTS of young talent emerge from our league!

I think this is another year of IH taking the crown. They knocked off the Cowboys last year and ended the 7 year run Wyoming was on (2020 doesnt count)
Devlin ran buck shot through the CHL and I think he is the front runner for POY

Joel could have a huge year and he will see the majority of the carries. McFarland entering his Junior year could be on tap for a HUGE season.

If you look at the Key loses , quite a few CHL teams will start the 2024 season with new QB's under center.

Deer Park loses quite a few seniors that were good atheltes, on top of a new HC , could be a LOOONG year

The 2 biggest in question are madeira and Taylor. Both lose guys who had 2400+ yd seasons

Taylor IMO is the dark horse. they only lose 2 seniors. Return a VERY strong Junior class. Biggest question will be at QB. DO they go with the Sophomore kantz or Senior Ferguson?

That’s how it was before covid
 
The stage is set for Indian Hill to go on their own CHL run IMO. I really do feel the minute John can leave, he will, which is my only hesitation believing they will actually do it.

As it's been stated many times, Taylor is a team that looks a lot better on paper than they end up performing on the field. Until that changes, if I could bet on HS football, I wouldn't bet on them. I do believe at some point performance will match the potential but when will that happen???

Wyoming will have another good season in regards to wins & losses due to playing in the CHL but, as been stated, they don't have the same horses on that team as they have in the past; nor are they in the pipeline like they used to be. Doesn't mean they don't have talent; just not the same level it would appear. Joel is really good but is he good enough to carry an entire team this year?

Reading will always be a respectable team merely cause the mentality of the kids and people in that community. They are always willing to throw down and put up a fight. Even when they don't have talent, you generally have to show up and be able to play a physical game. I think losing Fancher is a bigger deal than it seems on the surface.

I don't know much about Madeira or how to take the results from last year to even attempt to try to formulate how I think they'll do this year. They could never figure out if they wanted to be a good team or an awful team. They were very similar to another team in the league.

I'll throw this out as a disclaimer before my next thought. Like Taylor needing to prove results can match potential before you go all-in on them, Finneytown has to prove they can beat someone other than DP in the CHL before I'd be willing to do the same. Mariemont's football program, however, is slowing fading down the drain IMO. I really, really like Coach Tatum and have a feeling this might be the year they can beat someone else in the league. They were close last year and that gives me just enough hope.

Deer Park has a head coach that's in the building, he's young, energetic, and comes from a place that's organized and functional. If you get the right guy, there's no reason Deer Park can't be a D6 version of Colerain with Combs/Bolden. To get there is a lengthy process requiring a solid foundation and an entire culture shift to establish & implement. To do it right IMO might even mean a really bad year this year as you flush out the old ways of doing things and players who aren't willing to do it right.

I’ve been following the CHL since the 1990s. My observation is that Deer Park has never been able to sustain a winning program in any boys sport. A small school version of Combs/Colerain is about as far from a possibility as any scenario I can imagine.
 
I did this for last year's thread and figured I'd do it again.

Going off the rosters on the CHL website, here's an idea of what each team is losing/returning (in bulk) for next season:

#1 Indian Hill (9-3, 7-0 CHL)
-Graduated 13 Seniors from a roster of 48

#2 Wyoming (12-2, 6-1 CHL)
-Graduated 11 Seniors from a roster of 37

#3 Reading (7-4, 5-2 CHL)
-Graduated 12 Seniors from a roster of 61

#4 Madeira (5-6, 3-4 CHL)
-Graduated 11 Seniors from a roster of 47

#5 Taylor (4-6, 3-4 CHL)
-Graduated 3 Seniors from a roster of 41

#6 Mariemont (4-6, 2-5 CHL)
-Graduated 14 Seniors from a roster of 53

#7 Finneytown (3-7, 1-6 CHL)
-Graduated 6 Seniors from a roster of 28

I believe during the 90's, DP only had 2 losing seasons. I think those were 1992 & 1996. They were never a 9-1/10-0 type team but they consistently competed and that was with C.A.P.E. and Loveland in the league for approximately half those seasons.

You're also likely not old enough to remember that Colerain was a so-so football team most years leading up to Kerry Coombs being hired in the early 1990's. I want to say they were 2-8 his first year but that conversation was so long ago I don't remember. An older guy that coached with him in the 80's told me about the start to his coaching career and it wasn't very good. If you could randomly choose 100 kids per grade level from Colerain, you'd end up with DP's student population, SES, etc. Not to mention, after Tom left, Colerain has been pretty awful so an indication that the right coach in a school like that would make a big difference.

I still don’t see how anyone could look at Deer Park’s history in the CHL and come to a reasonable conclusion that the right coach could create a Colerain type dynasty. How many seasons did Colerain win the GMC during the Coombs/Bolden era? What is it about Deer Park that convinced you of that possibility?

Again, pre Coombs/Bolden, Colerain was a traditionally losing program w/ a couple decent seasons mixed in. The 3 years since Bolden's departure, they have had a losing season every year, including 0-10 this past year. You ever think over the past 20 years Colerain would ever be 0-10???. So yes, I think if it's done the right way, I think it's definitely possible.
 
No one could have predicted what Coombs did. It was lightening in a bottle. The right man in the right place at the right time. I guess if there’s another Kerry Combs out there it could be repeated anywhere. I just don’t get what makes someone think Deer Park is the place it’s likely to happen more than any other school.

The development of the Little Cards program played a massive role in Colerain's sustained success at well. I had a good friend/teammate at FT who grew up in that program and he was so technically sound by the time he entered high school that he ended up lettering on varsity all 4 years and being a 1st team all-league lineman at a very average size of 5'9/5'10, 220 lbs.

Coombs wasn't plucking these guys off the street in 9th grade and simply turning them into OSU-caliber recruits over 3 years. The youth program played a massive role in building that culture from an early age and keeping the best talent at home.

5 of those losses were to Wyoming, who lost what, one CHL game in that timeframe?

I personally would love to see another CHL team rise to regional and maybe state prominence at the small school level-especially one that is not as well resourced as say Wyoming, Indian Hill etc. Just too many factors in play that make the situations different and maybe not as realistic than what makes many of the MAC schools of similar size up north so successful year in and year out.

I never said they were horrible. I just don’t understand what would make someone think that particular school has the potential to be a decades long juggernaut. Even if a miracle worker started something like that they wouldn’t stay there long enough to build a dynasty.

BUMP. this thread has been slow moving this year!

I was hopeful the IH faithful and Wyoming faithful would be having it out who was going to walk away as champs!
 
I think Indian Hill repeats this year, with Wyoming finishing 2nd.

Reading, Taylor and Madeira seem to be in the second tier of teams.

Mariemont, Deer Park, Finneytown falling in the final tier.

Nothing here really surprising, besides the gradual free fall of Mariemont. A team that has been in the 3rd-5th range for a decade is going to have their third pretty bad season in a row. No Charlie Tully to "save" them this year.

To be honest, I doubt it.

Offensively, IH is going to be led by Daniel, Cole and Picton and Wyoming will have Hancock and Hamilton. Not sure who's next up as QB for Wyoming. Both should be fine in the CHL, but I don't personally think either one is setup for a deep run in the playoffs.

R16 almost always produces a team that at least plays in the DIV State Championship as well. I expect that region to be loaded with strong competition. Valley View moves up from DV to DIV and will be joining R16.
