Battle of Pickerington - OCC

So does North have a chance this week or their luck runs out? If their offense can only manage field goals or a single touchdown I think they are going home very disappointed
Liberty’s pretty legit across the board. They won’t “wow” you. PN may have some individual pieces more talented than Liberty, but the Patriots are a “the whole is greater than the sum of all parts” type team.

Liberty may win the trenches, handily.

Do they have a chance?? Yes. They certainly have the ability to play w/nearly anyone, BUT I think this is the week that their consistency issues bite them. The stupid penalties, the poor offensive playcalling (use of all those weapons) and the poor game management will sink them if it continues. I certainly will be rooting for them to win and I hope they do, but I've been thinking about it this week and I'm going with something like 28-17 Liberty.

North’s margin for error is going to be virtually zero in this one. Even if PN can overcome their self-inflicted obstacles, and play their ‘A’ game… I’m not sure that’s enough.

Liberty isn’t abundant in talent. What they have, though, is kids in the right spots with schemes to match.

Pats won’t have a DL chock full of talents in the same light of PLSD beasts of yore like McCollum, Doggette, Gillison et al — they will however have two studs on inside tackle’s shoulder who do their job well.

They don’t have a Rocco, Weirick or Chazz at QB; but they have a kid who can manage the game, make something out of nothing along with a good arm.

RB by committee, IIRC. Top two ballcarriers fly under the radar - they are dudes in their own right. Very big line that can move.

I personally have wanted to see OL win R3 this year for a reason: I feel they can best represent COH in D1 at Arlin… and possibly the week after. Nothing’s a given, tho.

Well its gameday, seems like the rain should be gone around game start. I think whoever wins tonight, next week is toast against Mentor/Eds

Man all season I've watched so many bad snaps, so many times the QB was picking the ball off the ground. Funny thats how their last drive ends

PN has so many penalties….just look poorly coached. They were also outplayed last week but berlin gave it away. They have multiple D1 guys and berlin and liberty might have 1-2 combined.

same old, same old....penalties, turnovers, poor offensive playcalling. Preston Bowman almost singlehandidly kept North in it w/an exceptional game.........I'd like to know what his final stats were. Some amazing catches......of course his passing leaves a lot to be desired....better stick to receiving.

I’m not sure where the program goes from here. Would love to see some changes as the new generation of kids enter the program.

Like I said on another thread, nobody has done less with more.

True, but at least they didn't quit last night like they did last year vs. Gahanna. Having your superstar WR playing QB at the most critical moment...while your D-1 (non-athletic) QB lines up as a receiver... truly mind-boggling. That interception was the true epitome of Panther football.

Free advice: doesn’t appear to be a deep bench of prospective candidates out there in this offseason cycle.

It’s one thing to part ways. It’s another to go find the next guy. Very shallow pool from what I can tell. COH football outside of the OCC, London and Watterson this year had no one worth a bucket of warm water — as in no one who stands out as looking to take a new job from their current situation.

Yea I can’t imagine Coach Buttermore at Upper Arlington leaving for another school, who does a great job with perhaps less talent than most OCC schools.

As a Pickerington fan, I think this narrative gets overblown a lot. People forget real quick that the ‘22 class had less than 15 total players as freshman (Hillerich's 2nd year), and very few were multi-year letterman. Phillips is now notorious for driving programs in the ground, seeing bare cupboards coming up (or kids transfering out), and then bailing instead of developing. As talented as the ‘23 class was, there was, again, about 17 total freshman on the team. I believe there were 2 division 1 football scholarships to non-"power 5" schools, and they have yet to play to my knowledge. Since Hillerich has taken over, the total players switching between the schools has dropped dramatically. He's had his fair share of move-ins (just like a lot of big, notable programs). Gahanna had 5 starters on last years' team, and they consistently bring in 2-3 players from smaller and city-league schools, but people don't bring it up as much. Do individual coaches, game-planning, and “play-calling” sometimes leave you scratching your head? Of course; all programs everywhere have this issue. Everybody seems to be an expert at the peewee, jr high, high school, college, and NFL level. Everyone here is guilty of criticizing their team at some point and thinking/saying "WTF is this?". Check my history, and I've been one of the bigger critics of my Tigers for the exact same things that North is now. Poor offensive playcalling, poor discipline, seem to lose with a ton of talent, etc. I still maintain the 2010 team that couldn't beat Davidson was one of the best to never win it all. Only one team wins it all, and it's been the same 2 teams at the top the last 3 years!

At some point, it’s a disservice to great teams like Liberty, Gahanna, and Upper Arlington to consistently say that North has better athletes and should win. Having the best 2-3 athletes doesn't mean much if the rest of your team isn't that caliber. Watching the game Friday night, North definitely had the top 2-3 athletes, but the next 7 were playing for Olentangy (especially the O-line). Only 1 starter for North's line would start on Liberty's o-line. Saying anything else diminishes other teams' accomplishments! Other than Bowman, Annarino, and Taylor, who would any Liberty fan want on their team from North? (Maybe #9?) Does North do a good job promoting their players for the next level? Yes, and I am envious of it. I think a lot of programs would benefit trying to promote their athletes because isn't that a large part of what playing division 1 football is? To continue playing a game we all love, help become a better person, and give opportunites that would otherwise not be available.

It also diminishes the accomplishments of the team. Regional runner up is not something to snub (it hurts in the short-term). Do Tiger or Liberty fans look back and say, "Man, what should have been?" because of loses to great teams in the state final 4 (1 game after regional finals)? Or, do they celebrate accomplishments? I look back (other than 2010 season), and celebrate what was accomplished, and remember the fun times I had cheering on the players with my friends and the community. Central was creme of the crop for 15 years, and consistently had 3-5 divison 1 power 5 players every year. It was never rebuild... It was reloard. Watch the Indiana game, and you'll see 3 on defense that won the '17 and '19 state championships. Another one is a 3-time captain at Duke, and is now starting in the NFL. That's just the notables on defense! Coach Lomonico has gotten a lot of slack the last couple of years, but I maintain these things are cyclical. Everyone should look out... Tigers are on the rise! I just wish we can finish one game without cheap shots or punches thrown, and be able to shake hands at the end of the game because it was a good game!

My point is, everybody's got an opinion and talks a big game behind a computer screen. If you're so knowledgeable and great, apply, and maybe get your $4,000 contract. (The athletic contracts are not automatically renewed each year in Pickerington) Have fun dealing with parents, school board, boosters, fundraising, practice schedules, game schedules, and entitled hormonal teenagers. I will continue cheering/watching and be entertained by the accomplishments of the kids in my community.

Great points all round regarding the state of the North program. Both Phillips and Hillerich both have served there purposes. Phillips did a phenomenal job of putting Pickerington North on the map as a statewide player in Central Ohio and a perennial contender in region 3. Phillips raised North's profile, and was able to get them to compete with at the time was the most difficult OCC division (Pick Central, Lancaster, Gahanna, Grove City, Groveport, Reynoldsburg). Without Phillips, this program maybe never gets off the ground. He definitely modernized the program from it's humble beginnings.
Hillerich, I think has been a great fit for North. Hillerich has raised the numbers in the North program on the varsity level and the junior high feeder programs have had great success and high numbers as well. He has done a great job in energizing the student base and raising participation numbers. His first year, they didn't even have the numbers to field a freshman team. This year their varsity roster had 93 players. The player development has been another piece that has impressed me. The amount of homegrown kids, that have developed into contributors and the amount of college offers made to the program is top notch in Central Ohio. He has created a really good homegrown staff, and does a great job of developing coaches (look at the amount of coaches that have taken HFC jobs). He has also solved the Central transfer problem and alot of kids are staying and playing for North. Nate, is the prototypical millennial era coach and really relates well to the kids of today.

It's easy after a tough loss to question every decision in game, but the North program is on the right trajectory and will have staying power in the years to come in region 3. I could understand if folks were upset if they would've gotten their doors blown off in the Liberty game. They were a bounce or two away from playing this week, Liberty just slightly executed better and made a few bigger plays in the key moments. Remember these are high school coaches, if they were the next Bellichick they wouldn't be coaching there.

The other point to make the rest of Central Ohio is catching up. It's no longer just the Pickeringtons, Davidsons, and Coffmans. Bradley, Gahanna, Upper Arlington, New Albany, The Olentangies, have all caught up and region 3 is as competitive as ever. 11 out of the top 13 teams were all either 7-3 or better. These programs have built great infrastructures and all very well coached. Anybody can lose on any given night.

I would say that the Olentangies particularly Liberty have had a better history going back the last 8 years compared to Bradley, Gahanna, Upper Arlington, and New Albany. Unless your bringing up the last 20 years even Davidson. Heck PN doesn't have that great a record vs Liberty so it's basically PC and Coffman that the Olentangies have caught up to.

The point being is that each of these programs have had success in periods and that Central Ohio is alot deeper than say 10 years ago. I'm not arguing that Liberty hasn't had a better run than the likes of those mentioned. Let's not be naïve, region 2 was a benefit for some of those runs. Not taking anything away from those teams, but region 3 was a heck of alot rougher with Columbus and in some years the Wayne's-Centervilles of the world.

Let's not pretend that North didn't blow Liberty out a combined 59-0 in '17-'18 (both state final 4 appearances for Liberty), but they couldn't get past the Tigers those years. Patriots got the better of North in '19, and I don't think they have played since then. Region 2 has been very weak other than Springfield recently, but you still have to win the games to get there. The point about region 3 and central Ohio football being improved is an understatement. Very few games are a gimme, and if you go into a game with the wrong mindset, you could find yourself on the losing end of the scoreboard by the end of the night.

Good points about Philips too. Godwin was 1 yard away from a championship appearance.... My beef with him is that he was a bit of a catalyst for kids switching schools (to and from). He put North on the map big time, and brought a few transfers from Central and a gutted Grove City. But, by the time he was heading out, younger players were leaving at a much higher rate. Additionally, I don't think Tom had many coaches on staff that were actually teachers in the building or the district. Hillerich is the opposite. From what I can tell, the majority of coaches are teachers either at North or Lakeview. From the outside looking in, North doesn't appear to be the best or most disciplined culture, but they have certainly turned the tide here in town. OSU goes 20 years barely losing to Michigan, but the last 3 years have been devastating in Columbus. There isn't a single OSU fan not scarred by the 90s or last few years that is comfortable with this Saturday's matchup. That's the way it is in town now. I'm bitter about the losses, and I will not be shocked if it continues. That being said, I expect to win every time Central steps on the field. It's the mindset that's been ingrained for the last 30+ years: Iron sharpens iron.

Really.... a yard away from a state title imo. That Moeller and North game at Welcome Stadium was one of the better High School games I've watched. Whoever would've won that night, would've done what Moeller did to Whitmer the next week. No, most of Tom's staff were teachers in the building. The early years Greg Frye was on staff as well as his brother and a couple others from the outside. People can say what they want about Tom, but he developed four players that got to the league.

Seeing what liberty is doing to Eds- North had a heck of a year. They will be just fine.
Question is can Central get it together and make a run with the sr qb next year.

I’m sorry, but I disagree. Top to bottom PN had the best roster in central Ohio this year, and arguably the best roster in central Ohio the past 3 years. Go back to the posts that started this thread. It was the preseason of 2022 and the PN fans were talking about them becoming a dynasty.

Since that time they have won 0 league titles and 0 regional titles. They are the champions of social media and 7v7, that’s about it.

All this talk about PickTown football and these loaded rosters, early signing day looked a little rough. UK kid from North along with a few MAC kids, Central had a Cincy, Marshall and maybe Tenn State. I'll take Gahanna's rosters over these any day. Why does Pick always think they have the best rosters? Gahanna the past 2 years has sent probably 15 kids D1 - this year alone they had multiple kids to Army, qb to Kentucky, LB to Cincy, and a few YSU guys. Last year half their oline went D1 with a WVU rb. Maybe the hype in Pickerington is a little inflated
