It is never too early to talk a little bball... Any one have any thoughts on this years team?? A better effort from the team than last year? Jake and Daryl playing??

New to yappi - but have heard a lot of good things about the basketball team this year. Several nice players have transferred in, and we already had quite a few guys coming back. Unless they change their minds, Jake and Darryl are both playing. Hope they can build off the success of the football squad. Go Comets!

David Goodwater will be an immediate impact player. 6'6 athletic transfer from Shaw will automatically help the comets. D1 caliber player getting a lot of looks from the MAC HORIZON AND A10.

there is another transfer in 6'5 wing guard Chris Cromity from Benedictine. very talented young man with a very good skill set he just needs to be more assertive on both ends of the floor

Season Starts

Well, I've been waiting for news and posts.

The PD story says that Garfield Hts had a bit too much last night for the Solon boys and won 84-69. That's not as bad as some spreads were in early season action. The Comets were as close as 52-51 but Garfield put on a run. Sounds like Garfield is heavy on basketball only players and Solon needs their footballers to get into basketball shape.

Sounds like it could eventually be a better season for these Comets! :)

Well, I posted about the game and NOone came in, on the boys basketball forum. I was late due to computer lock-up. Whatever.

Go Comets!

Sorry that I missed you Saturday morning. My mouse just goes to Yappi Football and Solon Comets so I'll have to re-train it to look for basketball.

You did report what I suspected; that GH has some very good players who concentrate on the roundball. A big change form the Garfield atmosphere of wrestling & football a half century ago.

Speaking of wrestling, my school was pretty good in '55 when they took the Ohio state title. But the high school up the street from me now is much better. They just set a NC state record for 141 or 142 dual meet wins in a row! A very diverse school, it has white, black and Hispanic wrestlers pretty evenly distributed. The heavy weight guys look like Cleveland Browns linemen; check that, these guys are taller. Now here's the attraction for Parkland High wrestling. You get to wrestle under the dome light! Yes, the gym lighting in very dim and a large domed light is over the center of the mat, maybe 15 feet high. You are definetely "in the spotlight" when you wrestle here.

A challenging schedule

It is great to see that the Comets have a schedule that includes today's PD list of teams from #5 through #10.

This new conference has sure made a change in competition for the basketball team (as well as football). We can really see how the teams stack up to nearly the best around.

Need to knock off a few to climb from our new #21 spot.

What happened to Caden Johnson? Is he still in school? Did he get cut in preseason practice? I'm sure I saw him at a football game last fall, so I presume he's still around.

Johnson made varsity as a sophomore, he had some height and I thought he had a chance to develop into a good player. I hope his basketball career isn't over.

Someone told me that Caden decided to concentrate on track year-round. He has a lot of potential to be a college high-jumper.

A Chance Remains

While the interest in Comet Boy's basketball on the Forum has waned, the fact remains that they still have an opportunity for more success. Even the PD thinks they have someting left and ranks them #16.

The good news is they still have games against teams ranked above them - like Brush & Twinsburgh - and a chance for redemption against Stow - if the Comets awake from their afternoon naps soon enough to play from the tip-off time.

The bad news is that the Brush & Twinsburgh games are away.

Well, this team can't afford any more bad luck so they best just make something happen like playing the whole game which would go a long way to secure more wins. Fans always like a team that grows during the season, learns from mistakes and finishes the season strong. The seniors will feel better the rest of their lives for the effort.

Go Comets! Beat Lakewood.
:grouphug:

When was there ever interest on the forum? Lord knows I tried, no response. Uhhh, I believe Lakewood is a winnable game, they're 0-10. Stow game was brutal. But Stow had beaten Walsh Jesuit by 60 POINTS this season. Really, the Kenston game, maybe Twinsburg, and certainly the Stow fiasco were the only badly played contests for the Comets. There is time to turn on the positive consistancy, that's for sure.

Thanks Gramps.

A win is a win

Comets were victorius at Lakewood 50-46 Friday night. It was a game they perhaps should have won by a bigger spread but they can't shake the "first half blues". Last night they got 15 points and were losing 15-21. Fortunately they put in 35 second half points. Some day the light will go on with the opening jump and all will be different.

I waited overnight for any comments but perhaps not many posters made the trip. Since I'm snowed in with an overnight 4-5 inhces and are not to drive today & tomorrow so crews can plow, I'll await any comments about anything. Don't expect my newspaper until tomorrow.
:hello:

A win is a win

It's almost incredible that the Solon Boys can't get started before halftime. They had 17 against Nordonia tonight.

They improved greatly in the 2nd half and Nordonia had to shoot at the other basket and something happened because the Comets go home with a 18 point win by scoring 46 points.

Tough night for basketball. Still waiting for a Comet wake-up! :hello:

Yep, I was at the game. First half, brutal! 2nd half different story. Solon played better defense and rebounding, taking care of the ball, and some scoring. 17 points in the 1st half, 29 in the second. Lojewski, Goodwater, Cromity, all turned on, and Baldwin eas getting and making free throws. Solon now 8-6, Nordonia falls to 5-9. Parma up next @ Solon Friday night, they are 12-2 and 6-0 in the conference. Their top scorer Roth had 45 the other night, and he hit for 34 last night. Wow, rumors of Parma consolidating all three schools are rampant. That would most likely bring about a football and basketball power in Parma again. $$$ is really affecting many high schools now.

National signing day for college football. C U later.

Comets eke out a win and outscored Parma in the first half!

Yes, the 30-23 half time lead is something missing for a long time and it was the difference tonight in a final of 62-60 against an 11-3 Parma team at Solon.

I think that's three in a row since the Stow debacle. Next week it's a travelling week to Hudson then Brush. A tougher week but also a team that may be learning an offense for two halfs. Good Luck!

Arc'd Out

The Comets shed their poor start issue and let Brush stumble in the first half. Unfortunately the Arcs finished strong and the Comets didn't.

So it's a 55-53 loss on a night that could have meant so much. Hope there's enough in the tank to play tomorrow against Hudson (I think that is the reschedule date). Comets really need that win!

Go guys! Lets put together 4 good quarters! :dang:

Snow delayed win

In at game at Hudson rescheduled after Tuesday's snow, the Comets got off to their typical slow start and were losing by 10 at the half, 28-18.

The victory ensued after a big 3rd quarter and a 30 point second half capped by D.T Waldon's basket with 2.4 seconds remaining giving the Comets 48 points to the Explorers 46.

This gives the team a split for the week after coming oh so close to a win at Brush. Next Tuesday the Cuyahoga Falls squad comes to town and then it's the little bus ride on Friday for a BIG challenge at #11 ranked Twinsburg.

The Comets can do it twice next week and perk up things around here!

I know the weather was bad in Ohio because our Sunday Bulletin at church are printed 500 miles away in Cleveland and they didn't make it for today! Things were tough all over last week with snow in 49 states!
:crush: Happy Valentines Day and get well HurriComet! :crush:

Interesting week

The Comets got their win over Cuyahoga Falls last night, 58-32.

But, Hudson (we beat them Saturday) beat #15 Brush (we lost there by 2 points Friday) by a 57-49 count.

And then the 11 game win streak for our Friday opponent, Twinsburg, ended last night when Stow got them 56-51.

Go Comets! Give T'Burg a 2-game losing streak!

"U" have become Solon's #1 hoops poster (boys) in the past month Gramps. And it's even more surprising that "U" don't even see the games, and live 1100 miles away. Give or take a mile. Congratulations! I see where we open up versus Mayfield in March at Euclid district. Hope our rotation is set by then.

Trying to get it together

Solon beat Twinsburg in the 3rd & 4th quarters but lost 62-69 Friday because of their starting issues again. They were outscored the first half by 14 points because they only were able to put 20 on the board.

This team sure has been trying to put it together. A week ago they had Brush on the ropes but couldn't finish. Tonight they finish with 49 points and even with Waldon counting 20, they just couldn't manage to get it together.:wallbang:

Koski got 20 again in Mayfield's win tonight so the Comets (11-8) Sectional opponent moves to 11-7. Who'd a thunk it?

We were at the game and, (1)- Solon could have been blown out. And(2)they "could" have won. Twinsburg had lapses in the second half, but the Comets continuously missed "bunnys" and blew scoring chances. Hard to figure this team, especially after 19 or so games, who can?

One thing for sure, the Plain Dealer's scoring totals were blarney. Voigt scored and he wasn't in the totals, Cromity 13 ? Hmmmm. Payton 10 ?? Hmmmmmm! I think Waldon had more like 27. But whats the difference. Just like the first Twinsburg game, the final score doesn't illustrate how the game looked in the paper.

Frustrating? Exasperating?

And then there was one

The season has come down to a precious few; and last line on the season's schedule. Only a few more chances for me to encourage the Comets to "put one together" - a first half AND a second half game.

Stow is the Friday opponent. They are a good team so a win for Solon could lift the feeling of the entire season and move up a notch or two in the rankings. Stow is ripe to be beat. Look at how Brush is doing; they lost last night to Twinsburg and they have 6 on the wrong side of the won-lost ledger now.

In any event my hope is for the Comets to win one for the Gipper.

Go Solon High! Beat Stow! :grouphug: O.K., let's go win!

The Comet boys basketball schedule ended 11-9 when they lost the snow delayed game with Stow; 56-55. Interesting that it was an evenly scored game for Solon with double digits in every quarter and a halftime lead. But in the end, they came up a basket short for a win. Any thoughts on the sectional game coming up with Mayfield?

In non-basketball news, the boys swim team ended up 8th place in the State Meet and the girls swimmers were 9th. Nice job!

In lacrosse, the 2010 Comets start off with a preseason ranking of #12 in NE Ohio (Div.1). Their schedule includes games with #2, #4, #5; #6, #7, #8 and #9 in Div.1 and #7 in Div.2. A couple of wins here and they could gain a top-ten spot.

Kyle Hammonds was made a football offer by Ohio University.

Wow, how do you get all this info? Solon should have won this one. Stow won on the last second three pointer. Solon's Steve Miller was "hot" at the beginning of the game, getting his first start on senior night. He hit three "threes" and a nice switch-hand layup.

Comets signed a home-and-home with Worthington Kilbourne and play them in the second week next season @ home in Stewart Field.

Solon's boys and girls swim teams both made top 10 in state finals.

Solon has to get through Mayfield-Shaw, and Brush to get to the final vs. most likely Mentor @ Euclid district. That's a tall order. Go Comets!
