All-Time Lists Update - UPDATED 4 November - Boys' 4x1,2,4,8 added

OK, I'm updating all the individual events for both boys & girls through the state meets currently. As it stands now, I think I'll be able to put out whole batch of top 50 (where known) for individual events by the end of August. This compilation is 5 years in the making in its current form, but the genesis of it for me goes back to the late 1980s when I first started paying attention to the subject. I hope that this effort will help coaches out there to either spot mistakes or missing information from my compilations, but also to provide information on athletes that may have been missed on your own lists.

After that, it'll most likely take me a year to get the standard 4x1, 4x2, 4x4, and 4x8 lists together along with individual updates in the 2023-24 season. Hope to have the whole package ready for a yearly update for August releases after the Junior Olympic meets are completed.

I'm also working towards the same end for the indoor events. Top 30 in those.

Thank you for your patience.

This week, the distance crew on Yappi will be glad to know I'm attacking the boys' all-time 3200/2-mile lists. Taking it out to all sub-9:10 performers and performances for the 3200m. The equivalent 2-mile is 9:13.2. However, on my separate 2-mile list I'll eventually put together, I'll probably go to 9:15 or 9:20 for that list.

Currently, I have over 140 performances of 9:10 or better for the combined 3200/2-mile. Currently, 57 boys have official sub-9:10 personal bests, 2-mile equivalents not included.

Relay lists are underway. Most like likely cut-offs at this time will be:

Boys
4x1 - Teams - sub-41.8, Performances sub-41.50
4x2 - Teams - sub-1:27, Performances sub-1:26.50 (changed from 1:26)
4x4 - Teams - sub-3:17, Performances sub-3:16
4x8 - Teams - sub-7:48, Performances sub-7:46 (changed from 7:46 / 7:44)

Girls
4x1 - Teams - sub-48.0, Peformances sub-47.20
4x2 - Teams - sub-1:41, Performances sub-1:39.50
4x4 - Teams - sub-3:52, Performances sub-3:49
4x8 - Teams - sub-9:12, Peformances sub-9:08

All these are subject to change, but this is where I'll be working towards documenting unless the data dictates otherwise for either a shorter or longer list. Goal is top 50 of both teams and performances. I'm going to add a special notation to performances made by the same teams with the same team members to indicate the performances as either being the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc. best performances by that specific unit.

Deep into the boys' relays now. Scooping up and collating as much data as possible. Man, there's been a lot of great performances I've forgotten about over the years!

After I get done with the ladies later this summer, I'm going to collate all the top-50 lists for both and publish those here. They will consist of:

100m
200m
400m
800m & 800m/880yd combined
1600m & 1600m/Mile combined
3200m & 3200m/2-Mile combined
110mH (b) / 100m (g)
300mH
4x100m
4x200m
4x400m
4x800m
High Jump
Pole Vault
Triple Jump (Top 25 - not enough data yet for top 50)
Shot Put (12 lb - b) / (4kg - g)
Discus (1.616 kg - b) / (1kg - g)
Hammer Throw (12 lb - b) / (4kg - g)
Javelin Throw (Top 10 - not enough data yet for much else)

Eventually, I'll be expanding beyond these events to include a lot more relays & odd events, but the depth of the lists may be far less (top 20/25?). Anyway, the first mass lists will be out later this summer.

If you're combining the 880y with the 800m, shouldn't the 2 mile relay be combined with the 3200m relay?

Yes. If there are any left to make the combined top-50, I'll include those as well. The tracks and shoes of the last 20 years have done major damage to all-time lists, however, in the distance events. We'll see if any of the old yards marks will make the lists.

Beyond the all-time lists I'm working on this year, I do plan to start documenting the Dayton district & regional meets since 1934 & 1965, respectively. It'll take me a number of years to pull those together. I've done some very early research on those meets, and I have the templates already in place based on other projects you're familiar with. Dayton has a very rich history in HS track & field history that has yet to be properly documented. I hope to be able to do it justice. Not promising anything at this time, but it is a goal for this decade.

Yes, Dayton used to dominate the Regional meet when it was at Welcome and started in 1965. Trivia question? When was the first year a Cincinnati area team won the DI regional and who was it? Hint. I don't count Middletown as a Cincinnati area team. They won in 1972 ending the reign of Roosevelt or Dunbar winning every year. Won't next year's regional be the 70th?

I don't know the answer to your first question (although I have a suspicion it was in the late 70s?), but the 2024 edition of the now Wayne / Piqua / Troy regional meets will be their 59th. It would've been their 60th edition (1965-2024); however, the elimination of the 2020 season by the reaction to Covid eliminated an entire year and the Class of 2020's opportunities as seniors. That class will always be special to me for the opportunities that were stolen from them.

Edit: If it's not the late 70s, then I suspect the Lancers in 1993?

Going through last 50 years of boys/girls relay data, I've started compiling the 4x1600/4xMile lists as well. Using Craig Whitmore's data mixed in with HS Track national lists & MileSplit/AthleticNet. Berea's 4xMile team from 1976 @ Bay Village (25 May 1976) ranks #4 all-time with their 17:35.6. Wow.

You've probably provided it in other threads, but can you provide a link to your lists here?

Thanks.

I haven't provided relay lists in other threads. They are under development, but am well into them. Working toward releasing them before September.

Thanks guys. I've got all those on my list already, but thanks. Currently 30+ performances @ 17:55.3 or better for the 4x1600 including 4xMiles

I currently have approx. 150 sub-7:50 performances in the boys' 4x800m category. Good grief, I didn't know there's been that many. Still adding.

I assume this includes same foursome, different meet...
Yes. When it comes to performances, those include the same foursomes. When it comes to top 50 teams, then only way a duplicate line-up is included is if those marks are in different years.

The good part is there are not a significant number of sub-7:50s pre-district or post season (as compared to the number at regional and state).

Very true. Still within the top 100 performances is the 1962 National record of Dayton Roosevelt with their 7:49.9 4x880. Works out to a 7:47.2 converted time. Impressive for 61 years ago on cinders. I wonder just how far up the list they'd be today?

I seem to recall Lorain setting the state record at regional with a 7:48.4 in 1982. I wonder what mark they broke?

The 1982 State Meet program doesn't list what the state meet record was as of 1982 saying it was a new event in 1982. I'm sure there wasn't a state record according to the OHSAA prior to 1982 because it was a new event never run before 1982 in the state tournament. Btw, Lorain finished sixth at the 1982 state meet with a 7:53.0 (HT?). Trotwood Madison won in7:46.67, so Lorain's regional time was bettered.

Javman's attachment is where I got my information. In the first article it indicates King "authored" an alltime Ohio record (column 2, paragraph 6).
