2025 WOAC BASEBALL

I guess we should stop keeping score and hand them the conference title. They may possibly be the most talented team but best performing team is up for debate.
I know those Roaders would like to stop keeping score. I get it. Arcanum is extremely talented and the best team in the WOAC as I said. They got caught sleeping vs Dixie. They will handle Newton.

I agree Arcanum is the most talented but I think you can make an argument for Newton at this point. I have been big on my Trojans all year but you like them alot.. Have you seen Newton play? I am not convinced they will handle Newton. I think it will be a dog fight, as the last four years Newton is the only team that consistently gives Arc troubles. Should be a good battle in Trojan country.

Trouble for league games or for conference? Ansonia and Arcanum have each won at their place the last like 6 years combined.

Yes I’ve seen Newton play. Dixie is the only middle/upper tier WOAC team they played and they struggled for a lot of that game before pulling away.

Looks like we have a solid top five right now. Newton is in first, but they have a lot of league games left to play. Really excited to see TCN back in the mix at the top of the league. Did Garrett get his dad to help him out this year? His teams back in the day were tough!

Congrats to Bradford for their win last night over South! It's been a tough season, but they seem like a solid group of young guys to build with!

Big win for Arcanum over Newton today 3-1. Christ went the distance for Arcanum giving up 2 hits and 0 ER.

Was looking at box score - looks like a solid win for a battle tested Arcanum team.

I have a nephew that plays for Arcanum. Looking at their schedule compared to Newtons, it is much more loaded with competition. Newton's schedule continues to be pretty weak in the non-league.

Arcanum’s schedule is definitely more difficult—they’re going up against some of the better D7 teams in the area. I’d really like to see us challenge ourselves even more by scheduling a local D1 or D2 team like Troy or Northmont to see how we measure up. Newton’s non-conference schedule seems to be mostly against other D7 sectional teams, outside of the games they played on their spring trip to Nashville. Not sure what the level of competition was down there, so it’s hard to say how much it really tested them.

Tough schedule or not, Arcanum makes another early exit again losing to a lower seeded team. Baker seems to have his teams do well in the league but can't get it done in the post season when they play schools their size or a little bigger.

My take is that we play a solid non-conference schedule, but it’s mostly against smaller schools—so we’re not consistently seeing top-level pitching. We need to start scheduling bigger schools, because even if we face their #3 or #4 arms, they’re still quality pitchers.

No disrespect to programs like Russia and Loramie but after their top two arms, there’s a noticeable drop-off. And when you’re only seeing 80+ mph arms a couple times in league play, it doesn’t really prepare you.

Our hitting has been an issue all year, and I think our schedule has something to do with that. We are one of the biggest schools in the WOAC we should be running the table every year.

Arcanum and Ansonia do the best jobs at scheduling non conference competition. Ansonia usually always is below .500 but they have every MAC school on the schedule outside DSJ and Coldwater. They play Celina as well as a couple TRC with MU, Lehman, Riverside, and Covington.

Arcanum grabs the better D7 schools and then also plays teams such as Eaton, Springboro, etc. they play upper MAC schools as well the difference of course is the size of Arcanum being D5 vs Ansonia being D7.

I’m not sure how much it has helped Ansonia. It doesn’t seem like they have won very many tournament games in the last 5-10 years? Maybe a couple?

I wouldn't say newton winning today "Gets them over the hump". If they can't beat a horrible cincinnati district then it'll be really embarrassing for them. What would really get them "over the hump"is if they win a regional game against a loramie or russia.

As for North, Russia saved Braylon Cordonnier for tonight. I think russia wins tonight

Newton and TCN playing for District titles today. Will Newton finally get over the hump? Can TCN pull the upset?

I wouldn't say newton winning tonight " Gets them over the hump". If they can't beat a horrible cincinnati District then that'll look really bad for Newton. The team they play has won 5 games

Them "Getting over the hump" would be them winning a game in regionals against russia or loramie. A quality opponent.

As for North. Russia is probably starting Braylon cordonnier. It'll be an uphill climb for North. But credit to them, they have had a nice year

From the start of this one Newton seemed like they could show up and win.

Perry isn’t trying to do too much. 1-0 after 1

A four run 5th dooms Newton as they lose 5-4. Another District Runner-up finish for the Indians.

Looks like Russia is finally healthy, and playing well at the right time. Still awesome to see TCN have a great season. Coach Gray is doing a fantastic job.

Newton has had some bad/gut wrenching postseason losses.since 2015 they are 0-5 In the district final. In 2018 they were bounced in the 1st round as a 1 seed at home.

In 2021 they were upset by botkins at home as a clear favorite. In 2023 they had russia down to their last strike and couldn't beat them. In 2024 they blew a 4-0 early lead to Bradford in a district final. Now this year they get gift wrapped the 1 seed and a clear path to regionals to lose to a sub .500 team.

There's a clear reason why this happens. Their schedule is awful. They open up with Yellow springs? I mean seriously? They face 0 competition out of conference to rack up wins and get a high seed. Their soft schedule shows up every year at tourney time.

Newton has talent, but to maximize it, take the awful teams off the schedule and play teams like Versailles, loramie, Russia/ more competitive schools to get better. Nobody cares that you beat yellow springs or some team from out of state nobody else plays

This is rinse and repeat for Newton. Can we call them an "elite program" or an average program with a soft schedule? Thoughts?

Could you say the same about Arcanum. They've been at the top of the WOAC/CCC for several years but hasn't won a district title since 2013. They're schedule looks better than Newton but Arcanum is D5 and Newton is D7.

The Arcanum score shocked me, especially seeing Christ struck out 10. Arcanum does a good job with their non-conference schedule. Six MAC schools, Russia, Ft. Loramie, Springboro, Eaton, Miami East, and Covington is a pretty competitive schedule. They just can't quite get it done in the tournament. Graham is hot at the right time, and won the District title last night pretty easily.

Hopefully Newton changes their scheduling. You'd think this year would have been the year with seven divisions, and everyone spread out more than in years past. The talent they face after the first or second game of the tournament puts them in situations they haven't been in all year. I'm pretty sure Russia, Ft. Loramie, and Minster would love to play them every year. Put them on the books, and challenge yourself.

To be fair to both Newton and Arcanum, they’ve consistently been the top two teams in our conference for the past 8–10 years. While neither has captured a district title during that time, still two quality teams.
If you look at each team’s schedule this season, they both picked up quality wins:
  • Arcanum beat Versailles, Newton, Fort Recovery, Franklin and FM
  • Newton beat Dixie, Troy Christian, Dayton Christian, and FM
I watched the Arcanum game, and they just got out-hit and outplayed on defense — tough day, plain and simple. Newton, on the other hand, lost a game where they walked 8 batters and got out-hit. Hard to win that way in the postseason. At the end of the day, both programs have proven themselves year after year. Sometimes it just comes down to who plays cleaner baseball when it counts. Still a lot to respect about what these teams have accomplished.

It sounds like their schedule is a clear issue. You look at Russia and Ft. Loramie, they lose some close games against competition, but look at their post season success. The WOAC, let's face it, is not a good conference at all - with top 3 teams this year being Arcanum, Newton, and TCN (yes, FM won some games, but against bad WOAC teams). My grandson graduated from Arcanum and I always appreciated their coach scheduling tougher non-leagues.

I am not thinking their loss against Graham is a flook. They are beating Ironton as we speak in the regional finals.

Spoke with a Newton parent at Arcanum all star tournament this weekend. Coach Koop stepping down as HC at Newton. AD is expected to take over as HC.
I've heard their AD is difficult to deal with sometimes. If Kopp leaves, will Newton be able to maintain their facilities? Have to imagine a lot of the upkeep was funded by his travel organization.
