2024 World Wrestling Championships

Looking at the brackets, it appears that Ono is the real deal. Blaze is the only one to have given him a match. Beat Blaze 7-3 at U20's. His closest match @ Seniors has been 10-2.

Also, ignorant question from me. In all of these championships(including Olympics) why are there 2 bronze medal matches?

My guess...
They do this in several sports - not sure how many. I believe individual one-on-one sports like boxing judo, etc. It eliminates one more match (2 bronze medals wrestling again). So in wrestling (FS, GR, & WFS) that eliminates 18 matches. Add all the other 2 bronze sports and that's a lot of events and time that they eliminated.

Read that taekwondo is also a 2 bronze match. The best explanation I could find was that it is due to the brutality of the combat sports along with the extra time it would take. Not sure if that's the official explanation from the OLY committee.

Along with this, it also looks good on the Olympic stage to get smaller countries medals. Some of the wrestling power countries, like Turkiye, Georgia, and Azerbaijan don't win a bunch of medals in other sports. Double bronze allows more countries to win medals, increasing funding to those countries for wrestling.

The (presumptive) last match of David Taylor's career is coming up later today. He'll be an underdog vs Kamran Ghasempour of Iran, a fitting match to end on, win or lose.

Think your math here is off… November 2006 vs February 2004…

He’s about 2.5 years older or 33 months older. …
oops. Even though I knew he was turning 21, I was still thinking age 20 when I did the math. I went from 18 to 20 then backed off the months to January. Duh!

Looks like the way Taylor came out to the mat, this will be his last match. He looked to be almost in tears as he bowed down on one knee, slapped the mat and trotted over to his corner. Maybe he does that all the time. Don't know

Taylor gets passivity waring at around 5:20 mark. And a warning to Ghasempour at 4:46.

And Ghasempour goes on the clock first. Ghasempour gets a TD with :15 left on the shot clock. Up 2-0

Goes to the break at 2-0. Expect the action will pick up in the second period.

Taylor keeps getting close to a TD. Now he gets in on the legs and finishes 2-2 2:23 left.

And another quick shot after the restart - he finishes it. 4-2 Taylor

2:00 left

Taylor needs to keep trying to score. Seems to be backing off. That hasn't worked. He got his 2 takedowns in quick succession

Almost again. Ghasempour gets away as Taylor nearly had the legs again.

:37 left still 4-2

And Taylor lands another TD with :02 off shot by Ghasempour 6-2

Now does he take the shoes off.???

Looks like he is thinking about it. I think he is going to do it. Still bowing to the crowd. Still on the mat. Reached down and pulled his socks up - almost like he was going to then changed his mind.

If he didn't commit to it before the match, going to be tough to do it now.

Still out on the mat well after the match is over

At the center. Bowing to everyone. Now evident he is going to retire.

And he does, well maybe not. Just gave him his medal at the center of the mat. Shoes still on.....

And he does not take the shoes off.... Couple of nice fake outs there...

I just get the feeling he wants to do it on American soil. Same with Burroughs and likely Green. But could be they still love the sport and can't bring themselves to do it. Able to earn a living off wrestling in today's world. So not the same pressure of being able to survive with a family as it used to be. Plus he's got that OSU coaching salary - and he can keep working out while coaching. Nice gig for him..

Just read that he did retire - or more accurately that it was his last competitive match. He did not do the traditional leaving the shoes on the mat. Must not have packed a spare pair of shoes for the trip back to the hotel.... ;) I was wondering why they presented the medal at the center of the mat and then started reading off his accomplishments in the sport. Couldn't hear much of what they were saying other than I heard "David Taylor ....coaching... Oklahoma State...gold medal" and that was about it.

Also saw that Taylor traded his singlet for Ono's.... Tells me Ono has eligibility he can use and Taylor can find a scholarship lying around somewhere in Stillwater. Maybe he can change Ono's plans to spend three months at Penn State this winter.
