2024 State Tournament Updates

Final
Hiland 2
Russia 0
Russia's pitcher, Cordinier?, had a perfect game through 5, but Hiland's pitcher, Coblentz, was also tough and had to work out of a runner on third and 2 on situations.

In bottom of 6th, a walk followed by a single brought up Cody Yoder who doubled. Ballgame.

Really well played game by both teams.

Russia probably feels like they can't catch a break at state. A hit here and there would have given them a great chance to win.

It’s give and take. They upended Lincolnview for the 2022 State Title, in a game which LV specifically held back Ohio State southpaw signee (now at OU) Landon Price to go for the gold.

I think their bugaboo (if there even is one) just boils down to the sheer smallness of the school. I imagine they would want to have a 1A and 1B pitching duo (to their standards) where both kids are in the same class. They haven’t had that lately, and that’s OK if you can get that 1B (if you make it to the final game) to deal to the same effect as the 1A, or to the extent that the since-graduated Phlipot (1A/Ace last year; 1B/2 in ‘22) did to bring it home that year. It’s just a little difficult because they’ve had to get that 1B to be a junior (or in the case of ‘21, regional final year, the 1B was Phlipot as a sophomore in his first year of HS action.)

Cordonnier was the SP in last year’s state title game vs Hiland. Line was 3IP; 6H 4R 2ER 2K 0BB. Zero doubt that he was a good pitcher last year, all the reason to believe he’d make the jump from junior to senior year. Pitched a hell of a final game against familiar faces.

There is no doubt that kid has been working on his pitching. It looked to me like he added a couple off-speed pitches and was more precise with placement compared to last year. He was outstanding.

Next year he will be a terror on the mound. Plus he hits almost .500.

We had a sendoff for the Twinsburg team while I was walking to church this morning. I feel so disconnected with high school sports in recent years outside football.

Pay tv for title games doesn't help. I was going to watch the games today, then realized...

DII State Championship, FINAL:
West Branch 3
Hamilton Badin 2

Badin hadn't given up a run the entire tournament (6 games) and were up 2-0 heading into the top of the 7th. Their starting pitcher was at 77 pitches, 1 hit, 4 BB, 3 HBP. They pulled him, and then they give up 3 in the top of the 7th and lose 3-2.

I mean other than the fact he was 1 HBP from being ejected (I believe) I don't see why they pulled him.

Unless that kid is either coming off an injury or currently pitching with one, there was no reason that starter should have came out for Badin.
That loss is squarely on the Head Coach.
That said, I am STUNNED at this postseason run by West Branch. So damn proud of those kids and that community! Go Warriors!

Easy to second guess, but man. Maybe pull him if he gets in trouble in the 7th. Feel for the kid they brought in.

Comets State Champions!!!!!
Finally! Dang these Comets don't believe in allowing runs to score. Between their pitching and defense, they just made it impossible to score. I felt like after they won that 1 to 0 semi, that this was going to be their year. That was the kind of game that always got them. Good for the Comets. Now do it again next year ;)!

I hate that Badin lost the way they did but whoever was pitching the last inning isn’t the only reason they lost. 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and the coaches decision to remove the starting pitcher played huge roles. The coaching staff at Badin does a lot of great things for the program but they get a little tight in championship games obviously.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping they'd win this. I have a lot of friends involved with the school and follow thier programs pretty close. Been to a few baseballs games and many football games. Crazy how consistently good they are.

Hats off to Fort Recovery, from 9-11 at one point to a 16-12 finish and a state runner up for the first time in 71 years those kids brought everything they could to Akron but came up a couple of runs short to a terrific defending champ.

Couldn't be more proud of those kids for how they've represented NW Ohio this year.

Great job by the Comets. You were the class of SW Ohio and now King of the Mountain. Already looking forward to next year and another potential showdown with Moeller. Well done! GBM 💪⚾

The kid they put in was the side-armer. I watched him pitch in the district final last year at Mason. Similar situation. He ended up allowing the winning run in that game too. Rough to be that kid two years in a row. I was at the Badin game yesterday. No idea why they pulled the starter. Definitely a questionable coaching decision.

Verdin has been lights out as a closer all season. And in the playoffs, he's been called upon to finish games where Chaney pitched multiple times. It was a formula that worked all season. Yesterday it didn't. It's easy to second guess after the fact, but the move wasn't out of the ordinary.

Chaney was about 1 batter away from getting pulled innings earlier, but he pitched out of trouble and settled down. That being said, they were piecing him throughout, just right at fielders. He didn't have his A game, but was good enough to blank them through 6.

I've seen every game this season and I refuse to question the decision to bring in Verdin when it's worked all season.

You simply don’t take out a kid who had given up 0 runs to that point to a kid who has been on and off throughout the season. When the senior was on he was awesome but he had several outings where he wasn’t on. Bottom line is Badin has been to state 17 times and has two ships and hasn’t had one for the last 28 years. They would have at least 3-4 more if the coaches just let the kids play and quit interjecting their “wisdom”

Not taking anything away from any of the kids. I think this falls on the coaches. I just feel bad for the kid for this to happen two years in a row - regardless of how well he's played during the season. Whether it was the crowds, the pressure of the situation (you can't simulate that environment yesterday), or whatever the reason, the kid didn't perform well. It happens. Chaney did well enough to keep the other team at bay, even pitching himself out of jams. What would have hurt to have kept him in just a little longer? They were hitting him, but the defense did their job. The next guy, for whatever reason, wasn't finding the strikezone and that was the difference. Just sucks for that kid.

Agree 100% the starting pitcher is always going to wonder why the coaches pulled him and potentially robbed him of something he would never forget. The reliever will always think of his failures and how he “cost” them a state title. Fair or not, they damaged a couple kids psyche with their stupid decision. Another Badin run to state, another failure to get the job done. Wash, rinse, repeat. Total choke job by the coaches as is their history. Nobody in the Badin community would dare say this but I’m an old man with no ties to the school anymore so I can speak the truth
