2024 Olympic Team Trials

What is the other mat that is being used for the MFS? Just said Burroughs would face Nolf. Did not see a Nolf win over Jacques

Cox didn't even have fumes left. He was running with the needle nearing empty 1:30 into the 1st period.

And he retires by placing his shoes on the mat.

What a career from J'Den Cox. 3x NCAA champ (including winning as a true freshman!), 2x World champ, 3 other world medals, and that incredible Olympic bronze run in 2016.

Cox beat Clayton Foster, Jake Herbert, and Keith Gavin before beating Kyle Dake two-out-of-three to make the Olympic team. He then needed a passport (because he hadn't been out of the country!) to qualify the weight in MONGOLIA, then beats Belarus, Iran, and eventually Cuba for the bronze as a college junior!

Sometimes frustratingly passive, I'll remember the world-class defensive ability and the amazing win over Reineras Salas Perez in 2016 for bronze. I'm glad we got to watch him wrestle. Congrats on the great career and good luck with whatever is next.

Moore had a fairly unimpressive showing. Have to believe the Cox match took a lot out of him. It was a battle. Tech fall loss to end his hopes.

Trumble was also extended in his match against Aiello. That's not an excuse. Moore just lost a match against an opponent that I - and most others - projected him to beat.

74kg- Jason Nolf over Jordan Burroughs 3-0
86kg- Aaron Brooks over Zahid Valencia 7-6

Tomorrow's men's freestyle finals:

65kg- Nick Lee v Zain Retherford (weight not qualified)
74kg- Kyle Dake v Jason Nolf
86kg- David Taylor v Aaron Brooks
97kg- Kyle Snyder v Isaac Trumble
125kg- Mason Parris v Hayden Zillmer

three finals are NLWC on NLWC, 8/12 finalists are NLWC members. Penn State is such a force right now, and they are running laps on everyone in the college to the point were the sport/season is unwatchable.

Don't know why it says no TV, it's on USA network at 6:30 again.

Olympic Trials Finals, R1:

57kg- Spencer Lee over Thomas Gilman 6-3. Competitive match here, with a 1-1 score at the break. Spencer with a nice takedown and turn to make it 5-1, Gilman comes back with a takedown that might have been four but only awarded two (it was close!). Loses the challenge to make it a 6-3 final. Thought Spencer hand fought really well and getting a turn quickly was huge for that match.

65kg- Zain Retherford over Nick Lee 2-1. A great scramble in the 1st period, but no points awarded. Shot clock point for Nick, step out for Zain made it 1-1 at the break. Not a ton of action early in the second either, both guys perhaps scared of a bad shot. Zain grabs a relatively meaningless shot clock point to make it 2-1. Nick Lee is bleeding. Zain might be bleeding. That's the final score.

125kg- Mason Parris over Hayden Zillmer 7-0. Mason gets a shot clock point to make it 1-0, follows it up with a clean takedown to lead 3-0 at the break. Zillmer tries to attack in the second, but Parris is just too fast and gets two go-behind takedowns to make it 7-0. Pretty clean match, would have liked to see a little more aggression from Parris but a win is a win.

97kg- Kyle Snyder over Isaac Trumble 5-0. Really nice knee pick from an undertook tie-up for Snyder for a takedown in the first. A go-behind and a step out made it 5-0, didn't think Trumble was that close to scoring. Snyder defensively is too good positionally for 99% of guys.

74kg- Kyle Dake over Jason Nolf 4-1. Really nice takedown by Dake in the first period, single leg and broke Nolf down for the two. A step out and shot clock in the second made it 4-0. Similar to Snyder, guys just don't score on Dake. Top 5 defense in the world at any weight in my opinion, just a positional wizard.

86kg- Aaron Brooks over David Taylor 4-1. A perfectly wrestled match for Brooks, takedown in the first and second period beat a stepout for DT. Brooks just did such a good job controlling the ties, reminiscent of prime Yazdani stuff

Round one done. Heard they are doing R2 of 57kg and 65kg in the morning session because...they aren't qualified I guess?
