2024 MLB General Chat

The TV networks fears of Milwaukee playing in the World Series can be put to rest. Milwaukee did its annual first round post season bow out tonight. Milwaukee follows the same script year after year. They win 90-95 games, get to the deciding game in the first round of playoffs and get knocked out. Their lockdown closer, who hasn't had a blown save all year gives it up in the ninth. Devon Williams has been virtually unhitable all year, just gave up four in the ninth tonight to take the L. Whether it's Josh Hader or Devon Williams it's the same every year.
Payroll matters. Even Brewers fans admit their lack of overall talent catches up to them in the playoffs.

Ok, looking at the playoff teams left, would you say the Reds are outmatched by any of the teams? I feel baseball is the most even sport when it comes to talent and overall play. The Mets and Tigers were train wrecks at times this season, yet they are two of the hotter teams in baseball now. It's all about what you do in a short series.

Ok, let me restructure the ask, do you think the Reds would be overmatched by all of the playoff teams? I don't think so. You can't convince me the Guardians/ Tigers/ Royals are that far ahead of the Reds, they just played better over 162 games.
If you can't play consistently well enough for 162 games to get into the playoffs, it doesn't matter how you would match up in a short series. Most teams in MLB could get hot for a 3 / 5 /7 game series, but that's irrelevant if they never make the playoffs.

Overmatched? No.

Could they win? 99% chance of no. They would have a very slim chance considering they cannot hit the ball and the postseason is all about playing small ball and manufacturing runs. Something the Reds cannot do

The National League would like a word with you about playing "small ball" in the playoffs. Neither of the NLDS series have been about small ball. The Yankees won without scoring a bunch of runs, but they weren't playing small ball. Tribe/Tigers are built to play small.

S/O to Guardians David Fry. He hit a 2 run homer to put the Guardians up last night, then in the 9th, put down a safety squeeze to get a vital insurance run in.

There is no reason all baseball players can't do this.

Well, if managers would put the play on, more guys would do it. It was a great call and great execution.

Interviewed after the game and asked about the bunt, he said he had been asked to bunt only once before this season and he bunted into a double play, so he was surprised they wanted him to try again. 😂

BTW, Rocchio's slide was a high baseball IQ play as well, pulling back the left arm while reaching out with the right to touch the plate.

I agree with you about the Reds; they were simply not good enough offensively this year.

But small ball? The games have generally been low scoring, yet there have been 48 post season HRs so far this year, in 25 games. There have been 4 Sacrifices. FOUR. 31 SB. This is not small ball. It is the same game that was played all season.

A vomit inducing NLCS is now set. Two mega payrolls in mega markets.

And the Yankees are in the ALCS against a bargain basement opponent, regardless of who wins on Saturday. The only thing that can possibly keep MLB and TV from a wet dream mega payroll mega market World Series.

But @14Red has repeatedly told us ownership doesn’t matter.

Not surprising, teams with the money for the most part win.

AEW will always say the teams in the world series have the best management/ ownership. That's like saying the top companies in the S&P 500 are the best companies to invest in. Armchair quarterbacking at it's finest. How about we just stick to putting the responsibility on the players to win or lose. That makes it much easier to understand.

Gotta love modern baseball pitching strategy. Aaron Judge, one of the most feared home run hitters in baseball, comes up last night win a man and the Yankees up only 4-2 in the middle of the game, still in the balance.
Guardians call for a high fastball, the pitcher puts it right on target, and Judge put it in the seats. I know I'm old school and today's philosophy pushes the "elevated" fastball. But the one thing that hitters need to do to hit home runs is to get lift on the ball. You put the ball in the upper part of the strike zone, and all the hitter needs to do is get the barrel to it. If you put it at Judge's knees, and he golfs it out, more power to him. I just thought it was an incredibly poor pitch selection and yet it's almost universally accepted today.

We all know you need things to be "easy to understand". We agree that players win or lose games.

Understand this. Somebody is responsible for drafting and trading for the the RIGHT players, and developing the players. That is the front office. Simple enough?

Good observation......................the pitcher threw it exactly to the catcher's target.

No, that's not simple. That's redirecting blame off of who hits .200, who strikes out 40% of the time, who makes errors. Blame the players!!!! I laugh when someone gets a bad burger at McDonald's and they want to talk to the CEO??? Blame the person that makes the mistake!!!!

Who drafted and signed that player? If they were never drafted or signed, would they be able to make that error?

So you are saying all players are created equal? It does not matter who the front office drafts or acquires in trades? The management has no responsibility to build a minor league system that fully develops players?

Seriously you cannot be this thick.

Good gosh of course not. You're like talking to a 4 year old. You take every comment to the utmost literal. OF COURSE drafting and developing matter or why have a draft?? All I'm saying is when a team plays poorly, why do you immediately always jump to the manager, the GM, the ownership group? That's such a whacked way of looking at things. Let's just blame the players on the field. They are the ones who are winning and losing games. As crazy as you may think, performance matters and outside of a few, most of the Reds in '24 underperformed expectations.

So if the Reds draft you and let you strike out 500 times in a season, it’s 100% 14Red’s fault?

I am so flattered that you think I could play major league baseball. I'm not, nor have I ever been on any major league draft board.

But yes, if in this dream world, I would get drafted by the Reds and they put me in the lineup for 162 games and I struck out 500 times, it would be MY fault!!!! Yes!!!

Bill Buckner let a ground ball go through his legs in game 6 of the 1985 world series that the Red Sox could have won. That's not the Red Sox manager's fault, not the GM, not anyone else. Bill Buckner missed the ball.

In the super bowl at the goal line, Seahawks/ Patriots, Seattle at the 1 yard line and Russell Wilson throws a pick. That's not Pete Carrell's fault, not the owner of the Seahawks, it's Russell Wilson's fault!!!

Game 1, 1990 world series, Eric Davis hits a first inning home run off A's ace Dave Stewart. It's not Tony LaRussa's fault, not Ricky Henderson or the A's ownership group, it's Dave Stewart's fault!!!

I think you may be getting the hang of this!
