2024 MLB General Chat

I’m very much looking forward to watching games tonight, particularly White Sox at Tigers. The Sox throw Crochet and look to stave off loss #121 (I still maintain 122 is the one that matters), while the Tigers can clinch a playoff berth tonight in front of what should be an absolutely raucous crowd.

KC at Atlanta, Mets-Brewers and Padres-D-Backs will also be worth checking in on.

Today starting at 3:37 ET marks the final MLB game in Oakland. Lots of blame to go around, but a pathetic end to a once-powerful franchise.
As a White Sox fan, you know how it works in these two team markets. There is a top dog and a second banana, and the top dog remains the top dog regardless of their on field success. Cubs > White Sox, Yankees > Mets, Dodgers > Angels, Giants > A’s. The A’s being the only baseball team in town should benefit them. As Vegas has grown it’s now filling up with families in suburban settings and pro sports teams there now make sense as Vegas moves from a tourist destination to a place to live.

They are a very weird cult fanbase that only comes around when they are winning which unfortunately is fairly often the last 10 years.
I'll say this, I think all fan bases have their weirdos, it only takes a little success to see it. Fan is short for fanatic. Look at these WNBA whack jobs?? From a league who couldn't even get anyone to take the time to turn them on, to now complaining about stalking, bullying.... They ain't never happy!! There are some major issues with that league and it's internal and external.

Nobody wants to get no hit under any circumstance. I’ve said for awhile that organization is filled with a bunch of weirdos that look down on the Reds and Cincinnati. This only proves it.
I would say the Cleveland fans regard for the Reds would range from rooting for them as long as they aren't playing CLE to indifference, but I don't know of any CLE baseball fan who has any animosity toward the Reds. We don't compete with them in season and if they made the playoffs most CLE fans would root for them as a fellow Ohio team.

As for the organization? I would think they have a good relationship, since the share a spring training/fall ball home.

As a Reds fan, I agree. In fact I posted that on the Guards thread earlier this week. I'll be rooting for the Guards in October.

The Reds have rivals, and Cleveland isn't one of them. My primary dislike is for the Cardinals. I was at the Brandon Phillips / Yadi Molina fight game. Hated them well before that though. After that it is Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. For some reason I never worked up any hate for the Cubs. I dislike the Yankees and Dodgers more.

Open animosity? No. Condescending attitude while looking at Cincinnati as a joke. Absolutely.

Why would Indians fans have animosity to Reds?

That's like a big brother having animosity toward his younger red headed brother with a learning disability

Only one race, but this is what major league baseball wanted when they opened up more playoff spots. The Mets and Braves are getting ready to start a DH. Pretty simple, win one game today. If you get swept, the Diamondbacks slide into the other spot.
I always like these scenarios because it just validates my opinion that you try to win everyday. That seems simple but most major league baseball teams don't appear to agree. Remember all those games during the season when you sat one or two key guys for "rest" or skipped a start or two of your best pitchers? Well this is where it comes to a head.
Likely, if the Mets/ Braves split, they'll get to go play immediately tomorrow with their pitching staffs compromised, big advantage to their opponents who can for the most part stack their pitcing the way they want.

Yes, if Braves or Mets sweep, they are #5 and Dbacks are #6. #5 has to go out to San Diego and play tomorrow. Difficult for sure after a double header.

If they split, Braves are #5 and Mets are #6. Seems like a perfect opportunity for a little collusion by the two managers to insure a split. Then they are both in. Boy will the Dbacks fans howl if there is a split and some questionable decisions by a manager.

For sure, If I was the Mets manager, and we won the first game today, I would not play anyone important in game #2. Just use worst pitchers off the roster, and lose the game. I'd much rather go to Milwaukee with a fresher bullpen than sweep and go to San Diego.

Turned on game 1 of Mets- Braves in the 7th. Braves were up 3-0. Since then some incredible hitting (and poor pitching) Atlanta now has 7 and the Mets 8. Clutch hitting. Bottom 9 just starting. If the Mets hold on they are in…will be interesting to see how the winner approaches game 2. Mets win. Braves need the 2nd game or the Diamondbacks are in.

Fascinating numbers here for Detroit:
- nobody on the team has more than 75 RBI (Greene had 74 - everyone else under 62)
- nobody on the team has more than 25 HR (Greene had 24 - everyone else under 20)
- nobody on the team has more than 20 SB (McKinstry had 16 - everyone else under 10)

First team ever to make the playoffs with no players above those marks.

How is this team 10 games over .500 and in the playoff? I know their home field is a massive pitcher's park, and Skubal is amazing. But after Skubal they have a whole lot of nobodies.

What is up with the Brewers collapsing every playoffs? People point to them as the gold standard/something the Reds should emulate and I am very much rooting for them as they’re a likeable franchise but it appears the lack of payroll shows up in postseason play.

Caught some fire at the right time and have continued to punch well above their weight.

One of the reasons for those stats is Riley Greene was hurt for a small chunk of the year or else he’d be a 30/90 guy. Kerry Carpenter also missed roughly 25 games or else he’d be a 25/75 guy. They also started the year with a bunch of veterans that they unloaded at the trade deadline (Canha, Urshela) and replaced with young talent. The very high priced Baez also got hurt (thank God) making way for the rookie Sweeney to take over at SS.

Their bullpen has been phenomenal and after Skubal it has been pitch by committee. They are too young to know any better. Hinch should most certainly win AL Manager of the Year.

Detroit improved by +8 wins from 2023 to 2024. They rode a late hot streak to the playoffs.

Kansas City improved by +30 wins from 2023 to 2024. They sort of limped into the playoffs, but were consistently in contention all season.

Cleveland improved by +16 wins from 2023 to 2024. They controlled the division the entire season.

Since Cleveland challenged for the best record in MLB and AL all season and won the division I would give AL Manager of the Year to Steven Vogt. If not Vogt, I have no problem giving it to Matt Quatraro for KC’s massive improvement. I believe both are more deserving than Hinch. Add in that Hinch was manager of the cheating Astros and it makes the vote even easier.

I am enjoying seeing the AL Central unexpectedly flex its muscles, though I’m sure the national media hates it.

could you imagine a Milwaukee / Detroit World Series? The networks would lose their minds. At least Cleveland (Ramirez) and KC (Witt) have a marketable superstar that all baseball fans know well. Detroit and Milwaukee really don't.

When Adames leaves the Brewers for the one of the big market teams he'll suddenly become a star, I'm sure. Chourio should be getting some love as a future face of the game. But yes, they would not like the Brewers. All other NL teams remaining? Yes.

The TV networks fears of Milwaukee playing in the World Series can be put to rest. Milwaukee did its annual first round post season bow out tonight. Milwaukee follows the same script year after year. They win 90-95 games, get to the deciding game in the first round of playoffs and get knocked out. Their lockdown closer, who hasn't had a blown save all year gives it up in the ninth. Devon Williams has been virtually unhitable all year, just gave up four in the ninth tonight to take the L. Whether it's Josh Hader or Devon Williams it's the same every year.

Yep. Probably very frustrating for their fans.

Yep, when the Airbender took the mound in the 9th I was sure it was a Brewers win. Lindor's great AB coaxing that lead off walk set up the inning, and got Williams off his game a little.

Old man baseball rant upcoming....

So in last night Yankees/ Royals game, Royals up 4-1, Yankee Jazz Chisholm of the Yankees leads off the bottom of the 9th with a solo home run. He proceeds to run around the bases like he tied the game or put the Yankees up?? It's just crazy to me how "me" oriented today's players are. A few years back, we had this beef that players should not show up the pitcher and bat flips, etc. Well now we're way too far the other way. Guys celebrate routine plays or celebrate in situations where it's not necessary.
