Ignatius kicks off the soccer season with a game this Saturday versus Avon Lake at Cleveland State. In seeking its 7th consecutive Ohio title and 14th in the last 21 years, Ignatius will be the heavy favorite to win yet another championship. Ignatius has almost its entire team from last year's title winners. It has been reported that Ignatius had over 60 boys turn out for the varsity. Ignatius will not be playing games on its campus. Rather, all the "home" games will be played at Cleveland State. If you're planning to bet on who is winning the title, Ignatius or the field, I would advise picking Ignatius.

It finished 9-0

Ignatius beats Twinsburg 3-0. Game was not nearly as close as the score indicates. Ignatius' first goal looked like a "Bend like Beckham" goal to me as a corner kick resulted in a score.

Should be an interesting weekend with the Jesuit Cup being hosted at Walsh. Walsh is an up and coming team, but I'm not sure they're quite yet up to Ignatius' caliber. But Walsh gets to host them tomorrow, so we'll see.

Rough weekend for the Wildcats. After the football team gets taken to the woodshed by Avon, the Soccer Cats lose to Walsh Jesuit on penalty kicks 2-1 (PKs 7-6 in favor of Walsh). After taking a 1-0 lead at halftime, Walsh went to a shell defense with five men back. Despite this defensive scheme the Cats peppered the Walsh goal the whole second half, with the goalie making numerous saves and a few posts hit by the Cats offense. With about 15 minutes to goal, the Cats scored the equalizer (always wanted to use that term). In a flurry in the last few minutes, with a Walsh player getting a red card, the Cats lived in front of the net, but could not score. (Actually they did score, but the goal was taken away on a ruling that a Cats player had pushed a Walsh player into the net.) So it was on to PKs. Neither goalie distinguished himself in the OT, but on the seventh kick the Cats player sent the ball over the net. And that was it. No Jesuit Cup for the Cats this year.

On a side note, the SIBN soccer broadcasting team was AWFUL. It seemed that the color man (boy) had never seen a soccer game in his young life.

It was a heck of an early season game:

(You have been spoiled with some truly incredible SIBN announcers through the years.)

The Walsh goalkeeper played out of his mind. Sometimes you get goalied.

I have discovered since I posted the above that I made a big error. The Ignatius soccer home page listed the game with Walsh not as a loss (as I had written) but a draw. Apparently the score was decided by the end of regulation time, 1-1 in this case. A game decided by penalty kicks has no effect on a team's won-loss record. I apologize for my mistake. There are nuances to sport of Ohio high school soccer that were beyond me. But I am learning more and more each game.

Officially, it does go down as a tie for each team's record. The only reason they went to PKs in this instance is because it was the Jesuit Cup and a winner needed to be decided for the tournament. Otherwise, in a normal regular season game, it would have just ended as a tie.

On Saturday, August 31, the Soccer Cats take on St. Benedicts Prep out of New Jersey. These two teams have consistently been in USA's top soccer teams for the last five years or so. It should be a great game. Tune in on SIBN to watch it.

At the half, Benedicts 2, Ignatius 1. Benedicts is REALLY good, fast and big. One observation: the Ref seems to have left his whistle at home. Very physical game. Another observation: SIBN has sent its A-Team of broadcasters to do the game. A vast improvement from the Walsh game.

Final St. Benedicts 4, Ignatius 2. It is unlikely that Ignatius will play a team as good as Benedicts in the rest of the season.

Much longer than 5 years for both schools.
