2023 Bengals

If you are Taylor, what do you do for Sun in a meaningless game? Do you play your starters for the whole game ( since it's the last one) or do you play a lot of backups to see how they perform in game time situations and if you want to keep them?
Why would the Bengals not play all the starters? They’re trying to win a game on Sunday.

Play them for the whole game. It looks like the Bengals will win, since the Browns are likely to rest the starters. Do the Bengals play some backups ( not at the beginning) to see how they perform?

Pro Bowl announced today, Bengals had 2 players selected, Chase and Hendrickson. Ravens 7 players, browns 5, stealers 3. This team needs an infusion of talent, Burrows masks a lot of issues that this team has. Jessie Bates made the Pro Bowl for the Falcons.

Bengals have $68.5 mil in cap spice for 2024 season but that is only with 38 players under contract. Burrow only counts for $29.7 mi in 2024, his extension $$$ kick in in 2025 at $46.25 mil.

Big question marks/holes to fill on the roster:
* Chase extension looming. Tyreek Hill is highest paid wr at 4 years, $120 mil. Chase will exceed that.
* OT is a must - TJ Watt, Alex Highsmith, Miles Garrett & Ravens have own Bengal tackles.
* WR - Assume Higgins & Boyd walk. Is Andrei Losivas good enough/ready to take over as wr2?
* RB - Mixon is gone. Chase Brown looked good at the of the year but he had fumbling issues in college. Still need another rb
* DT - Do you resign 30 year old Reader or look elsewhere?
* Backup QB - I assume Browning would want to return but it will cost the Bengals more than the $750,000 he made in 2023.

As long as Burrow is upright & healthy the Bengals are a contender but the roster definitely has some holes in it.

I would let Higgins leave but I expect Bengals to franchise Higgins. Need to address RT, LG, TE, DE (murphy so far has done very little), DT, safety. Lots of holes. Bengals have to get better at drafting, less there are changes made in the frt. office that is unlikely to happen. The Ravens have one of the highest paid QB"s in the league along with one of the highest pd. linebackers in the league (Roquan Smith) yet have plenty talent of talent around those 2 players plus depth. Mark Andrews goes down and the Ravens don't miss a beat with Isaiah Likely. Now again Burrow can make for a lot of "holes" on the team assuming he stays healthy.

The projected $$$$ tags for WR’s 2024:
* Franchise Tag = $21.6 mil
* Transition Tag = $19.4 mil

That would be almost 1/3 of Cincinnati’s available 2024 cap space for a 1 year rental to your #2 WR. Players are not happy about being tag and seldom have a good year playing in the tag.

RT - They'll try to keep Jonah
LG - Volson came on stronger in the 2nd half of the season, doubt he's going anywhere
TE - Hudson came on strong in the 2nd half of the season, Irv Smith will be gone, Sample was the best pass blocker on the team, try to bring him back
DE - Hubbard didn't have a great season, but they need another pass rusher opposite Trey, Ossai was supposed to take that step this year, but didn't
DT - Need to bring back Reader, he's dominate at what he does inside, they need DT depth more than anything, DJ and BJ are fine as starters
Safeties - Will be Dax and Battle, Hill didn't take as big of a leap this year but was also basically a rookie, Battle was a rookie, Scott will be gone

Teams manipulate and push cap hits down the line all the time. Higgins as a rental on the tag would be fine next year, if they want to push all their chips in and go for it.

This year was always going to be tough after resigning both LBs and letting the safeties walk. Essentially Pratt took they money for Bell. Bates was always going to be gone, he priced himself out of this team.

Resign Reader, resign Jonah. Not sure what the WR FA market looks like, but I don't think Yoshi will be ready to be WR2. If you can get a big possession WR, in the mold of Tee you probably let Higgins walk. Need DL depth. Are Boyd and Mixon for sure gone? Mixon was great this year and he seems to know that RBs aren't getting paid in the open market, would he take another team friendly deal? Same with Boyd, he's an aging #3 who's producing less and less each year, is there a big market for a guy like that?

They'll be drafting somewhere in the mid teens, seen a lot of people say go get Brock Bowers, but he likely won't be there and even if he is, pass catching TEs in the mold of Kelce are going to get more expensive as time goes on, so can't see that being a realistic pick for them. If they can't get a WR in FA and don't sign Tee, maybe go WR depending on who's there. Otherwise I think they go OL/DL in R1 again.

In 2024 Mixon will be 28 and heading into his 7th season with 96 games played in the NFL. Mixon will count for $8.5 mil against the cap or have a $5.75 mil cap savings if cut. Throw in his off field baggage, yes I think he is gone.

Boyd will be 30 and an unrestricted FA. He will have to agree to a far cheaper deal than what he just finished, he is simply not worth the $10.3 mil cap hit he was in 2023.

Georgia TE Bowers will be gone in the first 10 picks, Bengals current sit at 16 in the draft order & will not have a shot at drafting him unless they trade up - not happening.

I think the Bengals need to draft a OT in the 1st rd. They should have an opportunity to draft one from Oregon St, Alabama or Georgia with that pick. The T from Penn St & ND will be long gone by 16.

One year rental with Higgins is risky & expensive. One always has to worry about how the player will respond to being Tagged.

what off field baggage does mixon have? other than the unfortunate thing that happened in college.

Mixon had the shooting incident at his home before last season and I believe the footage of his college assault came out last year as well. This is just the things that have been reported, guys like this typically have additional things as well.

As a talent/RB, Mixon is solid and been a top 8-12 type of NFL rb. He’s been around a while, over 90 NFL games played. It goes quickly for RB’s. Dalvin Cook was a Top 5 RB just a couple of years ago and now he’s been on 3 NFL rosters in about 7 months.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Mixon only sign a 1-year deal? Isn't he a FA like Boyd?

I agree, I think Bowers is a pipe dream and won't be there. If the right OT falls to them in R1 the sure, but I don't think they need to force that type of pick. They need a day 1 ready player though, can't afford a project.

Higgins seems to be a very high character guy. He seems to like playing with Burrow and Chase. You're right that the tag can cause friction, but if they can figure out so e of these other pieces and have the money to do it, I think they will.

I believe the Bengals made Mixon take a pay cut before the 2023 season.

Per Overthecap.com, Mixon is under contract for 2024 season with a cap hit of $8.5 mil. If he is cut prior to 2024 season he will be in the books with $2.75 in dead cap money and with a $5.75 mil cap savings for the Bengals.

Picking outside the top 15, the Bengals have zero chance of getting the Georgia TE.

Last year was the draft for a TE, this year after Bowers the picking is slim, expect the Bengals to go after another cheap option in FA. Maybe Luke Lachey in the 3rd. rd. Let Higgins walk use that money on the line or defense. No. 1 priority is to keep Burrow upright and healthy. Jonah Williams made 12 mill. this past year and allowed 8 sacks, the Bengals can find another RT for that amount (or draft) and get better production. Nothing will change on the line though if Pollack is brought back. Bengals are lousy when it comes to creativity and managing cap space fire Tobin and get a real GM.

Iowa’s Luke Lachey is going back to college for another year.

Civil Lawsuit. In civil lawsuit they Claim he provided the weapon and ammo to his sister boyfriend who shot the kid with a Nerf Gun. If the Claim that Mixon provided the weapon and ammo is proven to be true I’d think he would face some type of consequences from the NFL Personal Conduct Policy. Not sure I would call it baggage but if he were suspended a Game or 3 could see the Bengals letting him go.

I think the civil lawsuit against Mixon is because he has money. His sister and her boyfriend are totally worthless...

Of course this dumb franchise will win today’s meaningless game to further decay their draft order.

Above .500 but missing the playoffs is literally the worst possible outcome for an NFL team.

Bengals finish 9 - 8.
Good news NFL is a league of mediocracy, keep Burrow healthy and they will make the playoffs next year but to make SB, Bengals will have to make some serious changes. No.1 new o-line coach, no. 2 get a new free safety. At the very least make those 2 changes.

Your #1 is get a OT; you face the Ravens, Steelers & Browns D six times.

I wouldn’t put too much into today’s game but the Bengals rookie rb & wr looked good, they have improved & show promise as the season progressed this year and Browning is a top 5 backup qb in the league - very impressive year for him.

This team might be toast. The talent won’t be able to overcome the poor offensive coaching for a third consecutive year. Injuries will set in, the Bengals will crash to a 9-8 record and miss the crowded AFC playoffs, and major soul-searching will be needed.
I nailed it on Sept. 10 following the Week 1 embarrassment.

Nice call. The soul searching will be things like paying Higgins. Letting Boyd walk is a no brainer. Paying Chase will be painful, but necessary. Letting Mixon go is a no brainer. They have to make a decision on Reader, I believe? That will be a soul searcher, depending on his health and the money.

I don't care who the RT is if Pollack is the o-line coach. Brown an All Pro looked all average this year, what happened. Pollack happened that's what. Coaching does matter.

Maybe it’s play calling, putting olinemen in bad spots, maybe it a bad run game, maybe it’s the qb holding onto the ball a split second longer to hit the longer routes downfield to Chase & Higgins, maybe it’s they are facing the two best edge rusher ms 1/4 of their games and throw in Highsmith and the Baltimore defense, maybe it’s because the RT was a 1st round disappointment, an average OT but not a 1st rd performer type.

Maybe it is your oline coach….maybe not.

Who are the browns current tackles yet somehow the browns line is arguably better than the Bengals, again coaching matters. Pollack's evaluation and development has been bad. Not saying Willams is good, not hardly but less Bengals get a new line coach I don't care who you put at RT. When Bengals picked up Collins heard how Collins would be a difference maker at least an upgrade.

Counting today, the Browns have had 11 different starting o-line combinations this year. Yes, talent counts, but coaching can never be overlooked. It's essential to protect Burrow. If that requires a coaching overhaul at offensive line, then let it be.
