Western PA drama... Death penalty for Bishop McCord & Bassetts

Crazy, to see such a harsh penalty. 3 year suspension is essentially a death penalty leaving all of the athletes with no choice but to transfer (again) if they want to compete in high school. Bassett & Gibson bros maybe end up at Blair or SEM, but about the rest of the kids? No doubt their transfers will be closely scrutinized.

Also wonder how soon the high school sports model will be become obsolete for elite athletes and shift to the private academy / club model - Valliant Prep in Az. certainly showed up at Fargo. Legends of Gold in SD and Spire w/ Kenny Monday is building an interesting alternative to traditional high school here in Ohio. The fact is that kids today are getting access to high level training and national exposure at a very young age. Objectively, what does high school wrestling have to offer a kid like Bo Bassett?

Sports like soccer, & hockey are already there. Basketball too with the many " Fill in the Blank Christian Academy" filling the NCAA pipeline ..... IMG Academy (Go ahead insert your Bishop Sycamore jokes here)!

Can't help to wonder if wrestling is far behind this trend. I could certainly sell it to a parent of a young phenom.

Anyone who knew anything about how the Bishop McCort transfers were going down knew this was coming. Check out Willie Saylor's Twitter feed.

Not right.
I don’t know the complete story…
and apparently neither does District 6…
but an organization should not be able to keep a kid from competing because of a transfer.

Easy solution... just end all scholastic athletic programs and go strictly club. Kids can go to school all day and then afterwards go compete with their club teams. If they aren't doing that they can get a job. Would save taxpayers plenty of money.

This is a case of a school being used by a parent to basically be a platform for a club team. If that is what people decide they want scholastic sports to be, then there just won't be scholastic sports. Said outcome would probably be bad in a broad sense as you would have less young people participate in sports, and there would be a miss in terms of the development pipeline in certain cases.

The average person that participates in school sports is relatively unaffected by this, as the level of athlete/play is above them. However, what would effect the average person is if schools chose not to sponsor sports because they've basically turned into clubs.

Bo Bassett, whether he wrestles a single match in HS or not will have an offer from any school in the country. Once a kid has an offer or commits to a college, HS basically becomes the injury prevention year while still trying to accomplish that ultimate goal of winning a state title.

Without knowing any of the details, the punishment does seem pretty harsh! With that being said, I do believe high school wrestling has a lot to offer all talent levels. Kids are only kids once!
