Trump Impeachment 2.0

And you just happen to know why these people left the republican party? And how do you know they left - by party voting registration? Or are you just throwing a number out there?

BTW, I know a few republicans who formally left the party because it didn't back Trump on his election fraud charges.
Sound like a bright bunch. Try watching the news, or reading it.

It seems like trumps legal team is arguing he cannot be impeached because he is no longer in office while also arguing that he should be in office because the election was stolen so the violence (while not his fault) was justified.

Impeachment manager fleshes out case against Trump

The Democrats' lead impeachment manager said Wednesday former President Trump's role in inciting the Capitol siege was the "worst presidential offense in the history of the republic," and the evidence against him is "airtight."
Why it matters: While Democrats say there is a direct cause and effect between Trump addressing a crowd of supporters that later broke into the Capitol on Jan. 6, some Republicans have fallen back on procedural defenses. The impeachment managers hope specific, graphic and voluminous evidence will create public pressure to convict the former president.
During a call Wednesday morning with the House Democratic caucus, lead impeachment manger Rep. Jamie Raskin detailed previously unreported injuries to Capitol Police officers, the damaging global view of the insurrection and tried to proactively puncture holes in the defense Trump will mount when his trial begins next week.
  • Raskin (D-Md.) told his colleagues one Capitol Police officer has lost three fingers and another is likely to lose an eye.
  • He said extremist elements in Russia and Germany view the storming of the Capitol as great victory for 21st century fascism.
What we're hearing: Raskin also told House Democrats the impeachment managers received an “embarrassingly thin” response from president’s counsel on Tuesday.
  • Trump's legal team argues he can't be convicted since the First Amendment protects his speech. They, along with some Republican senators, also argue a president can't be tried after leaving office.
Raskin said that argument has been “decisively rejected” by Senate, previously — most famously — in 1876 against the war secretary William Belknap.
  • “This moment was totally foreseen by the framers of the Constitution," Raskin said on the caucus call.
  • "Trump may not know anything about the Founders, but they knew a lot about the likes of him," he added.
The bottom line: Raskin summarized the impeachment managers' argument by saying, "This wasn’t shouting fire in a crowded theater; this was the fire chief sending a mob to the theater."

Notable legal commentators such as Jonathan Turley (George Washington University law professor), Michael Luttig (former appellate court jurist), Alan Dershowitz (Harvard Law School professor emeritus) and Kenneth Starr (Watergate special prosecutor) have all said the pursuit of impeachment and trial of a former president is moot and meaningless.

Moreover, Starr and Dershowitz have pointed out that post-presidency bans on political speech, assembly, politicking, campaigning, or commerce imposed against Trump would be bills of attainder, clearly and unambiguously prohibited by the Constitution.

Even the malleable SCOTUS Chief Justice John Roberts knows the Senate trial is illegitimate, a farce, and will not participate as presiding judge.

Grandstanding by the ACP. The party has no shame... they had a little in years past, their hatred removed what little they had.

Ok, but there are experts who have argued the opposite. We will just have to see how it goes.

Strange that you post Trump will not be removed from office and that is a office that is in a building he has already left .

Technically he 'left" but not before getting people killed with his FAKE 'Stop the steal " riot. Classy exit to be sure .

Whatevs. He left didn't he?

Trump himself has been requested to testify in his trial. I can’t imagine his lawyers will let him anywhere near a deposition. He’ll perjure himself in about ten minutes and end up in real legal jeopardy.
Trump? Try 10 seconds. In most cases he would never testify but we are talking Trump so I think there is actually a chance we see this happen. Would be the most watched moment in TV history.

Was he not impeached while in office? That process needs to be concluded imo. You could say it should be a trial and immediate acquittal but it must be completed.
Pretty sure it doesn't have to be completed. If he is found guilty....what is the punishment for the citizen trump?

That's it? He is done anyway. These are serious charges. Why not in a criminal court?
I'm just reporting the penalty per impeachment. Not sure if he was done in politics or not. He sure sounded like he wanted to run again, but he says/threatens a lot of stuff that doesn't really pan out, so...

Why not let the voters decide that?

Afraid of the democratic process?
So then you're good with throwing out juries altogether in a criminal proceeding and allowing 'the people' to decide the consequences at a ballot box? Sounds legit.

He is done. He wouldn't get enough support this time.

But if what happened on January 6th is so bad & criminal per every lefty on here...wouldn't they want him punished appropriately? Just seems political theater that results in basically no consequence seems like a complete waste of time.

Obviously no lawyer in their right mind would put trump under oath. It would basically be like driving him to perjury prison. But for the record Hillary testified under oath and so did Bill. Trump can't because he can't tell the truth and would get shredded on public TV or be coached to deny to answer any questions about the election being stolen and his actions.
