Suburban League National 2024

Top three in no particular order are Wadsworth, Nordonia, and Hudson.

Twinsburg is on the verge of a breakthrough in my opinion, and will have some momentum from a playoff victory last year, including their first playoff appearance since 2010, and first winning record since 2012. I think the Tigers are going to surprise a few people this year.

On the other end, what will it take for Solon to get back to its winning ways? They have a really great program and have been struggling quite a lot the past couple years.

I believe that Twinsburg lost a lot to graduation. They have their QB back though and he is good. One of the top players in the conference. If they can protect him they will do really well this year. If they can't, going to be a typical Twinsburg season.

My guess:
1-Wadsworth
2-Twinsburg
3-Nordonia
4-Brecksville
5-Hudson
6-North Royalton
7-Solon
8-Stow

Wadsworth is the class of this group, and will come in first the next two years.
Twinsburg and Nordonia are close. Brecksville is a step below.
Hudson's talent level dropped off significantly. The coaches are good, but recently placed too much trust in the wrong players.
The bottom 3 are equally poor. Order them how you want.

It won't shock me if Twinsburg finishes above Hudson - the T-burg QB is really good, but I have a hard time believing Brecksville will finish above Hudson.

I'm not sure what you mean with your statement that Hudson's coaches put too much trust in the wrong players. I was under the impression that they are more undermanned than they have historically been. So I wouldn't think they would even have enough players for the coaches to put their trust in the wrong ones. :)

I agree with you about Wadsworth winning it. They are a couple notches above everyone else.

North Royalton is a bit of a wildcard. For a 1-9 team, they actually played very well at times last year but didn't have the depth to finish. Had a handful of surprising 1 score losses. A buddy of mine that follows them closely said that they could surprise but need to stay healthy because they are crazy thin again.

That's honestly surprising. Usually North Royalton has a solid football team year in and year out. Is it going to be a super young group that needs a year or two, or kids just not coming out for football?

I'm not sure, but I don't think it is a lack of players. It is more a lack of good players. The talent drop off is substantial from the starters to the back ups. Schools like Wadsworth, Nordonia, & Hudson generally have back ups that aren't too far behind the starters. I'll ask the next time I talk to my friend that follows them.

I am hearing that Wadsworth has a freshman QB that’ll be a stud soon enough. Possibly playing time this year. They might be ok for the next couple years.

He is an absolute stud. Could end up being a big time college recruit. They really should be very good for the next three years. The junior class is the best class I have ever seen from Wadsworth, the sophomore class is solid, the freshmen class is just a notch below the junior class (great skill positions but not as much size for the freshmen). Should be a fun 3-4 years.

Dang. Must be nice to have that kind of talent coming through a program. Built from the bottom up.

I think that it will be longer than just the next 3 to 4 years. Simple demographics as well as the way the community has grown. Not a lot of growth in the school districts in the rest of the Suburban League. The growth AND a focus on improving the school district and facilities will pay major dividends in a number of ways, athletics being one. Wadsworth doesn't have the same issues of neighboring communities in keeping their players from changing districts/schools. Good things ahead for the school district, sports teams and residents, IMO. And I don't just mean in sports. I don't mean this as an insult to long time residents, so please don't take it that way - but Wadworth is becoming a great community and slowly re-inventing itself. Sort of like Medina has done.

yes. all homegrown, too. great program with kids and parents (many of which are Wadsworth alumni) who buy into the system and the culture. Coach Todd is a tireless leader- fantastic and very hands on everywhere, all the way down to the youth level. He literally knows just about every kid by name, too, down there.

Y'all are going in one direction and Stow going in the opposite. Losing kids to other schools, private and public, kids taking swings on the FB HC at halftime, enrollment numbers are down, teams are awful (minus girls basketball and sometimes boys basketball). Thankfully there has been a change in administration and a new superintendent coming to Stow. Maybe she'll make some changes to other key admin positions??

That was such a good program too. I was at my son's freshmen game last year and noticed a coach talking to a varsity player as I walked in. Coach was pleading with the kid to accept whatever punishment was handed for whatever he did and come back. Not sure how the conversation turned out, nor do I know the kid or what he did. It did seem to me the coach was handling it well.

Went down hill quick after Phillips left. They have had numerous kids quit the last two seasons. Let’s see if they can get more than 1 win this year, doesn’t look promising after looking at the schedule.

Does the HC get fired after 3 seasons of only winning 1 game a season??

From what I've heard, she won't bring anything positive to the football program. She's not known for her athletic support.

Wadsworth
Nordonia
Hudson

NR and Stow - not a lot in the tank. NR has a lot of heart and moxie though.
Agreed. NoRo was in most of its games last season, except Wadsworth and Nordonia. Perhaps "the best" 1-9 team around. Coach usually finds a way to keep them around 0.500 but last season he was dealing his a lot of injuries. Tough conference and a really tough OOC annual opponent in Highland. Don't know if they'll be able to beat N. Ridgeville or Padua this year, either but hard to believe NoRo won't improve on its 1-9 record.

Solon has had some very weak classes compared to a few years ago. Numbers are down and talent has been down big time. Sophomore class is much stronger with a couple D1 level recruits and more depth. May still be a year away from being truly competitive

And remember Cuyahoga Falls is one of the largest enrollment size of either division, but because they have not been competitive, they are playing in the smaller division of the Suburban League.

That was the case when they first switched, but enrollment has been on the decline. If we’re referring to just male enrollment everyone on the National side is bigger than Falls, and Barberton and Highland are bigger on the American side.

Tom Phillips was a horrible hire. Program took a hit after the Nori year under Phillips's leadership. A lot of talent was wasted. Had the committee gone through with selecting the person they wanted (assistant from Kent State) things would have been much different now. Program took a dive and Poder inherited a mess. Now it's worse, but a lot has to do with a bad combination of little talent and bad facilities along with other things. It looks like numbers are decent. We'll see!!!

Just wondering if their new high school and stadium will add any enrollment in the future.

It might keep some of their athletes home. I haven't heard much about them recently, but I recall Stow, Hoban, St V hitting CF pretty hard in past years. That stadium alone would've been a reason to look to transfer if I were a student there. :)

Talked to my buddy over the weekend. He said they have plenty of players. But very few linemen on either side of the ball. They have skill position depth though.

Always confused by this take.

Phillips went 25-13 with a league championship after looking at the numbers.

The new coach came in there was still talent leftover.

What did he do wrong?

How are players quitting on the new coach Phillips fault? The OC quit the first year for the new coach, is that Phillips fault too?

Genuinely curious about this.

Genuinely curious about this. the bad hire on what the previous coach did and what the previous coach left this guy instead of reading the writing on the wall… what was this guys record at Brecksville?! I bet it was well below .500
Nobody there wants to admit that this was an absolutely terrible hire so the easy way out is to blame all of the failures on the old coach and what the old coach left and what the old coach didn't do, instead of looking at the writing on the wall.
