Pittsburgh Pirates Thread

Mitch Keller is such a middling pitcher. I don’t get why everyone was so up in arms over his contract negotiations.

I agree. Keller is an average pitcher at best certainly not a No. 1 for most teams.
As a Reds fan I can tell you that when we play the Bucs in a series, I am happy if we can miss Keller. I'd agree he is not a #1 for most contending teams but he is a solid #2 or #3, with really good stuff. On his best days, he can be a problem for hitters. But he seems to have days where he just doesn't have it, and he gets beat up.

Having said that. I haven't seen a couple of the kids you have this year, so maybe they are better than Keller, I don;t know. You are off to a great start.

For me it’s just a consistency thing. I understand no pitcher has his best stuff every night but it seems with Mitch he has his best stuff around every 4th start and gets lit up in at least one of the other 3. Bucs have 3-4 guys who appear to be above average starters ,Jones, Priester, Skenes and a couple others. I think eventually this will be a strength maybe even this season if they are lucky.

Very nice start so far. But if yall remember last April they finished 20-8
Some positives- overall hitting, especially from Michael Taylor. Reynolds is his usual consistent self and Cruz is looking better.
McCutcheon? Overall looking bad and very late on swings. I cannot fathom him staying in the middle of the line up taking up significant ABs.
Bullpen looks solid. And as was described upthread Keller is looking pretty hittable
Aroldis still has some petro left in the tank

I don't see this team having the top end pitching needed to make any kind of run for quite awhile. The Pirates have one of the worst developmental systems in the league and it's showing up now. AAA is practically barren aside from Skenes.

Bednar blows his 3rd save. Maybe Bucs should put Chapman in that role till Bednar figures it out.

Yinzers booing Bednar. Stay classy.
Yeah, there are plenty of idiots amongst the fandom of evert sport. I’ve never booed anyone. Most people that boo are simply uninformed. In any case Bednar threw. 1-2-3 ninth v. the Phil’s last night so in all likelihood he’ll be fine. Just a hiccup.

Elly De La Cruz is a poor man’s version of Oneil Cruz.
LOL. Spreading your "knowledge" on other threads I see.

It is only 20 games or so, but you made your judgement after 3 or 4, so why not...

Elly De La Cruz: 19 games, 6 HR, 14 RBI, 10 SB, 18 Runs, .290 BA, 1.002 OPS, 25K
Oneil Cruz: 20 games, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 1 SB, 8 Runs, .222 BA, 0.605 OPS, 34K

I think Oneil is going to be a very good player too, but your disdain for Elly dates back to last year and is just clownish.

FYI Elly is on pace for 51 HR, 119 RBI, 85 SB. 153 Runs. Not going to happen, but if he attains 75-80% of that it would be historic. You claim to be a Reds fan, maybe just enjoy the kid instead of complaining all the time.

Here’s something you don’t see everyday. Two Pirate relievers allowed 5 (or was it 6) consecutive bases loaded walks today. Somehow they still managed to beat the Cubs 10-9.

Skenes allows 0 hits and 11 strikeouts thru 6 innings today in a win v. the Cubbies. Only issue with the strikeouts elevates the pitch count.

That kid is something else. Just not sure how long an arm can survive what he puts it through.

O’Neill Cruz strokes the two hardest hits in MLB season tonight 120.4 in the ninth and 121.5 in the tenth.

Bullpen was supposed to be a strength. Hard to watch. Both Jones and Skenes deserved to pick up a W.
Yeah, with Holderman, Bednar, Stratton and even a 19th green Chapman- this bullpen should be an asset. Too often it's a liability.
Just looked it up. Pittsburgh's bullpen ERA is next to last in the National League, behind a Colorado team whose always near the bottom of all pitching numbers

Skenes is pretty good..another quality start. He could easily be 4-0, 5-0 right now with just a little bit of offense help.

Many Card fans gave him a standing O after he was pulled in the 7th. Cool to see.

Jack Suwinski might be a nice kid but he is not a major league hitter. We’ve seen this for 2.5 years now. Yesterday and the day before I think he saw 6 pitches and 2 more strikeouts. The Pirates see something in him but he’s got to work it out at a lower level of baseball.

I think Suwinski is a pretty good defensive outfielder, but he just isn't a major league hitter. Then again there are a lot of Pirates either below or teetering on the Mendoza line. Right now the only Pirates that I feel comfortable at bat are Reynolds and Gonzales
