Watching some videos tonight, forgot how good Kenny Rogers was as a storyteller.

Three great songs:

1. The Gambler
2. Coward of the County
3. Lucille

Most interesting is that Kenny Rogers wasn't the gambler, the coward, or left by Lucille.

Dolly Parton has written over 3,000 songs, many of them telling stories, such as Good Old Days , When Times Were Bad
 
You could probably come up with a top 10 list of just Bob Dylan tunes. The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll and Hurricane are probably the most literate with Ballad of a Thin Man being more a more nuanced example. But nothing beats a guy writing a hit tune that is a non-linear account of his love life with his 1st wife, (that ends in a messy divorce):

How can I forget one of the all time best, Poncho & Lefty. Most know it from Willie & Waylon's version, here is the writer, Townes Van Zandt, with a very bare bones version:
