Wrestlers not appearing at the podium of the state championship

190 (state champ) and 215 (runner up) from Akron Hoban did not report to receive their awards after the tournament. Their head coach was present and handed out the awards at 190lbs. That was kind of a bizarre moment that I have never seen before. Can anyone recall that ever happening before?

Playing devil's advocate, the 215 lost the match on two extremely questionable calls. Don't like not appearing but if his brother decided to not stand on top of the podium in solidarity with him that's big from a family perspective but there's no shot it helps them with the public opinion of them which is already extremely low

I remember watching that match. Boyle got awarded a point from stall calls. Looks like Feister was draped over him in front head lock position but I remember Boyles hands being on the mat and not making advancement they were both just sitting there. I wasn't super close to the mat so I just assumed it was something the referee saw that I couldn't.

What exactly happened? Asking more so for understanding, I'm not on either side of the fence on this one.

I couldn’t see what the penalty points were, but I don’t think they were stalls.

Public sentiment was for sure not helped by the 215’s injury time.

Hoban had 1 stalling call in the 3rd period but it was a warning no points. 2 penalty points against Hoban. From what I could tell illegal hold in the front headlock? Not sure.

I think the official was saying the arm was across the throat? Both points were awarded for an illegal hold.

The coach apologized to all the 190s before giving the awards, said he was embarrassed. Other coaches that know these kids said they do stuff like this for the attention, so this thread is exactly what they hoped for.

I've never seen an official diving in repeatedly checking for this. He was on high alert to watch for this so either kudos to the Watterson coaches for alerting him prior to the match or he simply has a reputation for this hold. Either way, I thought the ref was a bit over the top trying to find it. I also do not think the first hold that gave up the point was in anyway illegal. Sometimes when you have a bad rep, you do not get the benefit of the doubt.

Illegal hold was the correct call. You can not touch hand to arm in that underhook/front head lock position. It's a choke and needs to be watched for way more often. We see this move being used constantly on the youth level right now. That and the chin whip, twisting the neck, are 2 very commonly missed illegal holds in our sport. They need more emphasis as they are 2 of the most dangerous holds in wrestling.

I believe it was an illegal headlock called, and they called it twice in that match

OAC no award stand means no wrestling the following year. I have never witnessed anything like this in my 30 year career. Bad, bad teaching point by the parents, Coaching staff and more importantly a School built on Faith!

I watched on NFHS and it was two separate illegal hold calls worth one point each. When the official came over to give an explanation about them to the Hoban coach, the first one it looked like he indicated that the hands came together and on the second one it looked like he was saying he locked hand to opposite wrist. The camera angle made it too hard to see from my vantage point but the official was right on top of both calls.

The injury timeout was interesting. The younger brother requested his inhaler at essential the same point in the third period in the match before so it seemed like it was something that was choreographed. The timeout in the 215 match also drug out because he then started asking for an explanation for illegal hold when it had already been given.

Going to assume there is some understanding should a kid miss the podium for a legit injury situation?

I do not know these young men at all and am in no way connected to Hoban. I saw them afterwards and the younger brother was very upset. The older brother was actually consoling him. It was obvious they are very close and as a parent of two young men I thought it was pretty cool to see how much they care about each other.

Very interesting move with the inhaler. Was it actually being used? Seemed like when they were both in uncomfortable positions in their matches they called for the inhaler. I use an inhaler daily and it looked like those two didn't even understand how to use it. Don't want to make light of a medical issue, but seemed like it was coreagraphed to me.

Both calls were for an illegal hold across the throat.

We are talking about high school kids...

Sometimes, they make decisions they will regret years from now. And I can definitely see how they felt at 215 they were unfairly penalized (I couldn't tell from video one way or the other). Also, this is the first time the 215 Feister has lost a match he wrestled since maybe 7th grade, maybe Tulsa? So it's not surprising they purposely missed the podium. Do I agree with it... no, but I can empathize.

I do feel that they have built up a bad reputation and have been unfairly judged in many adults' eyes. I have not seen anything egregious or beyond typical behavior on or off the mat from either of them that seems to have justified it. It just seems there are always all eyes on them. Though, to be honest, I haven't seen them wrestle more than a dozen times and don't know them personally.

But a good example, I was mastside for the 190 Feister District Final match. I could 100 percent see why a high school wrestler would be upset with how that match was being officiated on the edge whether I agree or disagree with how it was being called. But it looked like he took losing that match in stride.

As far as the inhaler/injury timeout/etc.

They are within the rules and until those rules change... kids will continue to use it to their advantage. They aren't the only ones, aren't the first, and definitely not the last. So trashing these kids for that is just as tacky and unnecessary as it is for someone to make a thread about an entire school being coached to do it...

I just hope they continue to wrestle and do well, and not use this as a reason to finally go football only.

I agree. I think the hype train kind of drove people to be overly critical of the kids and family. Showing for awards wouldn't have opened the door here though.

I literally watched a kid walk to the edge of the circle and make a drink gesture to his coaches and official asked if he was injured. He said yes and he match was stopped for injury time. A kid stopping you use an inhaler is closer to the spirit of the rule than that.

This is not the first time Feister has lost since 7th grade. Alex Taylor beat him at least twice in middle school he is much younger also…

Like I said I haven't followed him day in and day out and frankly I mix the brothers up regularly. Someone said something along those lines regarding his last loss.
