Hard question to answer. What are we talking about when we define the best high school football? Are you talking about the top elite teams in a state? Are you talking about the quality from top to bottom? Are you saying you are only as good as lower ranked teams (measured by similiar enrollment)? Are you talking about the product produced for the next level of competition? Are you talking about fan support on an average Friday night at a game featuring a couple of 5-5 teams?

Considering all the above, I would have to say - Texas followed by Ohio, Florida and California. My main reason for downgrading California is my perception (which may be incorrect) of the last question.
I live in Ohio and follow high school football nationally. My brother lives in Florida and took me a few years back to a Lakeland game. I would say the top 5 states are in no particular order and they are all very close are Texas,California,Ohio, Florida and New Jersey. New Jersey is a small state but they produce a ton of d1 prospects and their best teams can play with anybody, Bergen Catholic, St,Joseph,Don Bosco etc.

sorry about the spelling errors. How cool would it be if their was enough funding and time to actually have a national championship tournEy for the whole nation the winner of each state playing. I know its impoSsible but how cool would that be
RATIONALLY speaking; having a tourney involving all 50 states, would be a VAST WASTE of time! With the possibility of having the state champs from any states other than Arizona, Cali, Nevada, Ohio, Florida, Texas, and Georgia, would be a total waste of sweat. As an aside, I put Arizona, Nevada, and Ohio in the mix, just to keep the natives from getting restless. Nevada is actually BISHOP GORMAN and the Seven Dwarfs. And Arizona is Chandler, Basha, and Sapporo, 99% of the time. And in an oddity, Florida's best teams, generally come from the mid level classifications of 4A and 5A. out of eight classifications. But as far as depth is concerned, NOBODY, and I mean NOBODY beats the Peach State, on a year to year basis. Even Tejas usually has no more than a half dozen really pertinent teams, vying for that big school state title.

I know, I know, my take is just another homer, blah, blah, blah. But I have a homework task for you folks. Ask the COLLEGE and PRO SCOUTS, who is REALLY deepest in quality. I read a passage from several scouts a few seasons ago,. Who said if there was ONE state, that you could recruit, without help from any other, it would be Georgia for ALL your recruiting needs. The only reason why Tejas ranks highly, is because of the sheer numbers of schools and players. FOUR TIMES that of Georgia. BIGGER don't mean better. But when all is said and done, traditionally, the same half dozen schools, remain at the top in Tejas. Conversely, of the top teams in Georgia, five were ranked in the Top Twenty five in the country, until the playoffs started having them cannibalize each other. And when the smoke cleared, the 7A State Champions was MILTON, who was outside of that top twenty five at the beginning of the 7A playoffs. And teams such as Cedar Grove, Grayson, Westlake, Benedictine, Marist, Langston Hughes, Houston Co., and Thomas Co. Central, were formidable as well.

And WHAT does the winner of each state, mean? Because if you mean ALL state champions from a given state having to play each other, before the REAL state tourney. They'd be playing until February.

In closing, I went to Nashville in 1996, to watch the defending State Champions from Volnessea, play the defending State Champions from Chugiak, AK play. And the final score was Brentwood Academy 42 Chugiak ZERO, ZIP, NADA. The Alaska Allstars couldn't have beaten Brentwood Academy. And the Tennessee big school State Champions routinely turn down invites to the Corky Kell Kickoff Classic, in Mercedes Benz Stadium.

Per Capita Ohio would probably take it.
Who are the top fifteen teams in Ohio? And I'll tell you who the top fifteen in Georgia were, this past season. And head to head, you WON'T like the results. Because the seven and fifteen points that Massillon scored against their toughest competition, ain't beating ANY of those top fifteen in Georgia.

You just mentioned THREE PRIVATE schools in Jersey, who recruit THREE STATES! ***ROTFLMAO*** They play NOBODY to win a state title. The BIG North United, is a collection of those privates, who play each other in regular season, and THEN, turn around and play the SAME DAMN teams in the playoffs, after a GRUELING EIGHT GAME REGULAR SEASON! And Jersey has TEN MILLION PEOPLE and THREE legit high school programs, GET REAL. There is ten times the talent in the ATL metro than there is in ALL of JERSEY!

GEEEEZ dude. I'm TRYING to be on my best behavior here BUT! Some of the stuff that gets on here is LUDRICROUS! And NOBODY ever raises an objection. GEORGIA fits ALL of your criteria! I'll give you ONE example. 7-3 Camden Co. (the #3 seed of five teams) in our legendary Region 1-7A, trekked 313 miles in round ONE of the 7A playoffs this past season. To be cannon fodder for the #6 NATIONALLY ranked Mill Creek Hawks. They were a THIRTY point underdog. And they won 39-20, in one of the greatest upsets in NATIONAL prep football HISTORY! And the Hawks were BETTER THIS season, than last. When they and their All American safety Caleb Downs, WON the 7A State Championship over Carrollton and Freshman sensation Ju Ju Lewis, 70-35. And Camden Co. was beaten by future state runners up and national top twenty five ranked Walton in round two, after yet ANOTHER 300 plus mile trek to Marietta. Colquitt Co., who lost to 7A State Champion Milton 39-37 in round three upset, had already beaten nationally ranked Cedar Grove and South Carolina State big school champion Dutch Fork, 47-17. And FLORIDA teams won't even PLAY our best teams going forward. Northside Warner Robins has beaten Miami Central, while Grayson beat Central, 35-3, when the Rockets were #1 in the NATION! Camden Co. has ALSO beaten Central, after their trek to St. Mary's. And national power American Heritage Plantation, barely escaped the Hog Pen, 17-14, when our future All American kicker, Sophomore Ryan Fitzgerald) missed three forty yard FG. (our weakest team of the decade) He is now the three year starter at Florida State. Colquitt Co. would come back several seasons later and blast Florida power Jacksonville Trinity Christian, 38-0. And one our neighbors Lee Co., (Buster Posey, Luke Bryan, and Phillip Phillip's alma mater) beat Dr. Phillips recently in Leesburg. And we don't hear ANYTHING from St. Thomas Aquinas, Booker T. Washington, Vanguard, Lakeland, or anybody ELSE in FLAAAAWDA, who THINKS that they want what we're a cookin.

And YEAH, we have attempted on a number of occasions to put together a MECCA of National high school talent, in the Corky Kell Classic. But so far, other than Hoover, NOBODY picked up the phone.

Big problem is that not a lot of states start playing when Georgia does. For instance, in 2024 the OHSAA starts a week after the GHSA. Secondly, I've covered the Corky Kell Classic (now CKDHC) twice, and the reason outside teams aren't interested is that very few have even been approached as it's a much more ATL-centric setup, AND the teams that are offered aren't really compensated enough to make it worthwhile for them to give up a potential home game or a close travel road game to play, even if it is at MBS.

I say Ohio because Massillon and Mckinley are known nationwaide and also we have great teams down south ohio and also nobody can forgeet about St X. Granit texas, Florida, and Calafornia all have teams that are knowqn nationaly i guess my vote kinda was persauded by the history of Massillon Mck
Kinda like Cali has their water carried by THREE teams in a state of 40,000,000? ***ROTFLMAO***

By the BY, por lil Jawja currently has eleven DIFFERENT high schools with national top five national finishers, plus five schools with NATTYS!

As an aside, do you ever wonder why some states have teams that you've heard of? WELL sir, it's because there is NO ONE standing in their way to that notoriety!!!

And in conclusion. WHY is it that you folks always omit GEORGIA when talking about FLAAAAWDA? TRUTH be known, the Sunburn State has just about stopped playing our top tier in regular season. IN FACT, after ONE year of the Georgia-Florida Border Challenge, and two butt kickings by Lowndes and Colquitt. Florida has taken their ball and gone home. And It's been TWO DECADES since Florida said NO MAS, NO MAS, with regard to the Georgia Florida ALL STAR Challenge. Something about they didn't want to get any more of their studs hurt by them Jawja farm boys. It took um two days to get Anquan Bolden out of Grady Hospital in Atlanta, after our Colquitt LBER laid him OUT!

Having attended the Herbie to watch Texas High I was surprised by the turnout at Nippert Stadium. At half time of the Texas High/Findlay gave I would estimate there were less than 1500 in the stands (I am being generous) for the later game with Colerain (hometown team), I would be surprised if there were 5,000.

For all the hype, the attendence was pathetic. When Texas High played in the East Texas Classic several weeks earlier, there were probably 10,000 in attendence (granted the schools playing were within 130 miles of the stadium). But then again Findlay was about 155 miles from the stadium and they did not travel.
SOOO, what you are saying IS. The pinnacle of national prep football being in Ohio, is greatly EXAGGERATED?

I believe you, and I am not discrediting Ohio ball one bit.
However, if you look at it objectively on what TX does compared to the other 49 states, I do not think it can be disputed that Ohio is 2nd when it comes to high school football craze.

TX allocates more resources to High school football - And that all comes from the community.

-indoor practice facilities
-state of the art stadiums
-Grass fields are practically obsolete - Everyone has field turf.
-State of the art video equipment for scouting. Win - Win - Win

The reason TX can afford high priced ridiculous stadiums is because of community support.
The reason the High school head coaches make from 65,000 to 110,000 and do not teach a class is because of community support and the absolute demand for a winner. The community pays for the Stadiums as well as coaches salaries.

It's VERY SIMPLE - The Demand for a great high school team is there, so resources (supplies) are spent to ensure that.

When the TX High school playoffs comes around - if your team makes it - it is absolute hysteria in that community.
Why SHOULDN'T it be? I recall after Colquitt beat Milton in a highly contested match up in the 2015 quarterfinals at the HOGPEN! The Eagle fans were coming back through town on their way to Atlanta. And they encountered a group of about 2000 Packer fans, who were lining the parking spaces of town square. One of their fan cars stopped next to mine. And the driver commented that he didn't think that it was very classy for our fans to be lining the streets to jeer his team as they went North. I told him NO, you have the wrong idea. WE'RE HERE to cheer on OUR PACKERS, who always circle the town square on their way back to the high school's dressing room. And after they pass, everyone piles into the bars and restaurants that line the inner city of Moultrie, to celebrate the Packer effort.

And in Georgia, you couldn't hire a fulltime certified trainer for $65,000!!! And the bidding for a quality head coach STARTS at $125,000, with the lease of a brand new Black and Gold Packer Pick Um Up Truck a given. HECK, until Joe Biden flucked up the frickin WORLD. The Colquitt Co. Packers and the CC Packer 50th Regiment band, both had their own TRACTOR TRAILER RIGS! The Packer rig came with a full scale training room for in game medical assistance.

And EVERYONE except Richmond Hill in Region 1-7A, has their OWN full scale indoor practice facility and matrix board, provided by the national POP companies. ***smile*** Valdosta even has a free museum in their East endzone. And a three tier elevator that stops at every level to the pressbox.

I know this isn’t about FL schools but I have to say it…
I understand what you’re saying about FL schools, but we don’t have the same financial backing as the GA schools. Public schools in GA are the like Florida private schools in terms of facilities and resources. In GA coaches get paid big salaries and have access to unlimited resources. When I played for a public school in Florida, all of my coaches were volunteers. If the public schools in FL had the same backing as the public schools in GA, we would have much better teams in all classifications, top to bottom.
I saw you in another post mention Milton vs Central. Brother I’ve played high school football games on both campuses. It is night and day. Milton High School is a state of the art, college level facility. Miami Central is a dump in comparison. Miami Central doesn’t have the financial backing to maintain the practice field and the weight room. If you ever actually visited the Miami Central school house, you’d be shock how a program like that could even make it to the pinnacle of HS Football.

I also see you mention that Colquitt had players sign with Duke, N.C. ST., Georgia State, and a TE and WR who flipped from UGA to FSU. This is a normal occurrence for schools in FL. I played for 3 different high schools in FL in my 4 seasons playing. Every single year my high school produced at least 6 D1 players. My freshman year we sent 16 of our 22 starters D1, with volunteers coaches and bad facilities.

Now don’t get me wrong, we have our Private Schools that are state of the art (IMG Academy, Aquinas, and American Heritage). But unless it’s a private school, it ain’t on the GA level.

Also last time I checked, we had a 7-4-2 record against GA in the GA vs FL Bowl.

Also since the 2010 Florida HS’s have a winning record against GA HS’s at least for the elite teams.

Furthermore, FL only has one area of the state that truly produces top end talent. That’s the South Florida Tri-County area. But more specifically Broward and Miami-Dade county. Everyone other area in the state is essentially dead man’s land for top end Football. We have our outliers out in Central Florida.

We all our bais for our on State in someway , but after the Herbie seeing Lakeland , Texas High , DeLasalle. Cali , TX, OH , FLA all play some damn good ball we could argue a entrie lifetime about this. But I will say after the Big 4 PA has some great teams to. This is getting old. The only major difference is the fans in Texas and Ohio and the love for the game that none of the other the other States cant compete with. Just look at Big cities in Ohio and Texas like Cincinnati and Dallas & Fort Worth Area. In these 2 big towns poeple come out on Friday or Saturday night just like a small town its hard to find that kind of passion elsewhere. Thats just my opinion but I pretty much respect everybody.
Nice conjecture on your parts BUT! This isn't ME talking. THIS comes from the scouts of the NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE! GEORGIA has MORE players in the NFL than ANY................BODY!!!!! PERIOD! And it hasn't started LATELY! In FACT, for I believe, eight of the last ten seasons, Georgia is EVEN or BETTER with CALIFORNIS! They are Behind Texas by only a half dozen players, with 1/3 of their population. And Georgia is beaten out fairly significantly, only by FLORIDA, with three times our population. But their TEAMS and COACHES STINK! And THOSE states are BAR NONE, the top college and NFL producers in the country. I don't recall where Ohio ranks. But I'm fairly certain that it AINT ten the top ten. I believe that a souple of smaller states are near the top ten, that you wouldn't usually equate with that heavy of a talent pool, Mississippi, Louisiana, North Carolina, Maryland, and New Jersey. THAT'S talentwise:

NOW, as for top teams: While Florida DOES have aabn overal talent edge. Most of their teams STINK! They have the wild wild West in that staste. The Florida Legislature permitted wholesale transfers a couple of seasdons ago. And I heard a rumor lat season, that they could transfer when their tams was eliminated from the playoffs. WILD IF TRUE! But as it is, there are perennially, only about 8-10 teams in the WHOLE STATE, that are state caliber teams. They are St. Thomas Aquinas, American Heritage, Plantation,. Dr. Philips, Apopka, Vanguard, Miami Central, Miami Northwestern, Lakeland, Miami Columbus, and Trinity Christian.

Off the top of my head bone. Numbers of top 100 teams in the country from Florida: American Heritage Plantation, Miami Central, and Lakeland.

From Georgia: Grayson, Mill Creek, Collins Hill, North Gwinnett, Langston Hughes, Lee Co., Thomas Co. Central, Rabun Co., (Nantahalla Gap.,) Milton, Carrollton, Buford, Colquitt, and Douglas Co.

And of the 450 public/private schools in the state. MAYBE 25-50 are noncompetetive. As for GHSA attendance, most schools probably wouldn't have the types of attendance that Ohio probably means. BUT for big games in the higher classifications of 5A and 6A, I would expect between 5,000-8,000. And 10,000 plus for games such as Colquitt-Camden, Lowndes-Valdosta, Lowndes-Colquitt, Colquitt Valdosta, and ANY playoff game that Colquitt puts on road or home. Valsosta USED to fill their stadium, when they were rocking and rollin to 24 state and six nattys. But since Lowndes has opened, and not has nearly 3000 students, and 500m member band, Valdosta has taken a back seat as the school on the wrong side of the tracks. Albeit rather sparkly tracks.

That being said, I think that this NIL bull, is REALLY becoming a detriment to the quality of GHSA football. It only remains to be seen, if the money, money, money, aspect, can be controlled, before everything goes BESERK!

I would submit that Ohio has more "dynasties" than Texas. The schools at the top of the heap in Texas change frequently as new schools are created, the neighbor changes, coaching changes, etc... I think that is the nature of a public school system. The names at the top change in Texas, but it is the same names in Ohio.

In terms of players produced Texas turns out probably 3X the Division I players as Ohio. Honestly one of the reasons that occurs is Texas plays NCAA rules in high school. It is easier to project the players in the next level - especially the lineman.
The reason for those dynasties, is the presence of many schools that are mediocre. There are approx. forty to 50 schools in the GHSA, that are usually top tier most sasons. But t but even counties such as Gwinnett in metro Atlanta, only have about 6 or seven, out of 30, who are perennial powers. And most of THOSE, are because of loaded up teams. But due to coaching salaries, being less than you would think. Only Buford forges ahead with $150,000 salaries. While most schools in South Georgia, have coaching salaries for qual
Spelt makes great pizza crust. Oh, and great bread, too. There's a bakery in Berlin, Ohio that makes spelt bread; The Berlin Natural Bakery. On the subject of great football, some folks might make an argument for Pennsylvania.
