What Movies Did You See in March?

Phase IV (US-1974)

SciFi/Horror: Two scientists go to a remote part of the desert to observe a strange occurrence where Ants have developed a higher level of intelligence. This was pretty trippy and a highly intelligent film that leaves one thinking. Most would find it boring though but it was right up my alley.... 5.5/8

Feast II: Sloppy Seconds (US-2008)

Horror: Feast was pretty enjoyable so I was hoping the sequel which takes place the next day would be just as good. What started out as promising I mean the survivors of the first team up with a Lesbian Bike Gang, Midget Wrestlers, A used car salesman, and others ended up being a complete fail. Oh well, the monsters attack a small town while these characters watch as it got more and more stupid as it went on. Hopefully Feast III will much better .... 2.0/8

300 Rise of the Empire

5/8

Spectacular visual effects somewhat compensate for horrendous dialogue resulting in an entertaining 90 minute sensory assault! No one can accuse the makers of this movie of subtlety as they gleefully hack, stab, slash, behead and disembowel their way across the screen. I mean what’s not to like about seeing a freshly severed head, eyes still twitching, slung out into the audience in glorious Real IMAX 3D!

Unless you’re taking Vampira I wouldn’t recommend this movie for date night BUT if you want to re-experience those 70’s and 80’s Mondo gore films shot using today’s amazing digital effects you won’t be disappointed.

BTW, the dialogue consists mostly of characters making speeches to each other but there is this memorable line as the evil psychotic Persian warrior queen faces off with our Greek hero Themistocles: “you fight better then you ####”! You can figure out what four letter word she utters. Genius. Pure genius.

Texas Chainsaw (US-2013)

Horror: A big F-off to the ones in charge of this garbage. Obvious money grab that completely destroys the series. Yes, I hated it I won't waste anymore of my time talking about it .... 1.0/8

The Phantom of the Opera (US-1925)

Silent/Horror: 1929 restored version. Not really a fan of silents or this story but heard that the Lon Chaney mask removal scene was amazing. For me to like a silent something has to really stick out. I loved Nosferatu, Faust, Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde so maybe this one can match those. A phantom haunts an opera house and kidnaps the understudy who it falls in love with. Well, it wasn't all that .... 3.5/8

Others from the weekend...

Dead Before Dawn (Canada-2012)

Horror/Comedy: A group of kids become cursed after they break an urn that holds an evil spirit. Now, everyone they make eye contact with will commit suicide and return as Zemons... that is half Zombie/half Demon. Had its moments.... 4.0/8

HellBent (US-2004)

Horror: Slasher film... A masked figure stalks a group of gay friends at a Halloween festival.... 4.0/8

The Strangeness (US-1985)

Horror: Low budget 80's flick. A group exploring an old mine become trapped and is hunted by a strange looking creature. The music score was amazing for me and saves the film.... 3.5/8

Silent Scream (UK-1980)

Horror: A man who was just released from prison gets a job at a pet store but soon finds himself caged by the owner who is experimenting.... 3.0/8

Cockneys vs Zombies (UK-2012)

Horror/Comedy: Zombies attack an old peoples home and a bank robbery goes wrong .... kick the baby!!! ... 4.0/8

6 Souls

Horror/Thriller: A Shrink tries to disprove a patients duel personalities and finds that something more sinister is happening. I loved this flick ... 6.5/8

Spent 8 hours at work today, exhausted. Staying in tonight, going on a bit of a binge:

Out of the Furnance- 4.25/8. Harrelson and Bale were great, but the movie itself was choppy. Added the extra .25 for playing Pearl Jam's Relase me at the end.

About to start Nebraska.

Now You See Me: 3/8

Pretty great cast for such a poorly scripted and directed movie. The only things that makes it bearable are the cast and the overall premise, which somehow manages to be intriguing enough to allow you to slug through the while two hours.

Nebraska- 7/8. Started out a bit slow and the black and white is a bit off-putting, but picked up about a quarter through the movie. I don't care much for Will Forte, but he was great in this. Deep, emotional, and humorous. Highly recommend it.

I thought she said "you fight harder"...

I thought it was a good movie. Acting wasn't great but for what it is, the battle scenes were awesome.

Good analysis. Definitely started slow but it got better and I liked the conclusion a lot. Heartfelt movie

Bruce Dern was awesome. Agreed on Nebraska, one of the best movies of the year. Alexander Payne is easily one of my favorite writer/directors working. Still think The Descendants should have won Best Picture in 2011.

Hack-O-Lantern (US-1988)

Horror: Oh the potential here. We have a Halloween night and a group of Satanists.... this could of been great but the script was absolutely awful. Grandpa is a Satanist and mommy doesn't want her son Tommy to hang around with him. Things go bad one Halloween night.... here is a spoiler alert about how bad this was...

Amanda has just found out that her best friend has just slept with her brother who is a cop and she insists that she is shown where they "did it" at. Her best friend takes her to the cemetery and shows her the spot. Amanda notices a hand coming out of the ground, thinking it is a prank she pulls on the hand and discovers that her boyfriend has been murdered. Does she call the Police? No, she decides to go find her other brother Tommy to see if he knows anything about. She goes to her Grand Pa's house to find Tommy but instead Grand Pa is there and angry. He ties her up and attempts to sacrifice her to the devil. She escapes, does she call the Police? No, instead she is worried about her hair and has to get to the Halloween party. Once at the party she goes upstairs with her best friend and finds a topless woman sitting on the toilet not moving. She assumes that she is passed out so she works on her hair while her best friend goes into the closet. When she is done making herself pretty after all her boyfriend has just been murdered and gramps tried to sacrafice her to the devil she still has to make her appearance at the party and look good. She soon finds that her best friend is hanging from the closet and dead. She then goes and screams at the dead topless girl for help and then finally realizes she is dead as well..... I just had to rant about that..... anyhow Jack-O-Lantern was a huge letdown.... 2.0/8

Creature (US-1985)

SciFi/Horror: A research team travels to Titan to find that everyone has been killed. Soon they realize that a creature is responsible. Not too shabby for a low budget SciFi/Horror flick .... 5.0/8

Gallowwalkers (US-2012)

Horror/Western: A Gunslinger waits to battle those he had already killed in the dessert in the old west. This was just awful, that is the only way to describe it. Wesley Snipes must really be hurting to be in it... lol, they tried to make it epic but serious fail.... 2.0/8

V/H/S/2 (US-2013)

Horror/Found Footage: This just keeps getting better and better. An investigator searching for a missing college student comes across a series of VHS tapes at the kids home. 4 segments all together and oh boy, the 3rd (Safe Haven) and 4th (Slumber Party) segments are incredible.... "Slumber Party" still freaks me out ... the first two segments are pretty good as well .... overall, 6.0/8

Blood Runs Cold (Sweden-2011)

Horror: We are in Sweden, a musician who needs a break heads to a rental in her home town and finds something else. Very very low budget film ( $5,000 ) but they did an incredible job with it. I didn't care for the ending though but still decent... 4.5/8

Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (US-1986)

Horror/Biography: Based on the serial killer Henry Lee Lucas. Henry likes to kill and gets his buddy Otis to join him.... eerie ... 5.0/8

While not a new movie, I did see it for the first time in March.

Cloud Atlas. It's a confusing movie to follow, but once you put all the pieces together it's makes for quite an amazing movie.

If you like it the first time, it's definitely one to see a few times.

It's one of the rare cases of the film being superior to the novel, IMO.

Cheerleader Massacre 2 (US-2011)

Horror: Lots of naked woman which saved this flick but I don't think it was suppose to be very good. Cheerleaders that never cheer are at a camp while some robotic killing devices are flying around knocking them off one by one... 3.5/8

House (US-2008)

Horror/Thriller: A couples car hits some farm equipment on an isolated road and they are forced to take refuge at an old farm house turned into a bed and breakfast. It is off season but I think it is always like that as the "Tin Man" will kill anyone who enters.... did not like the ending, started out promising... 3.5/8

Europa Report (US-2013)

SciFi/Horror: Found Footage: 6 Astronauts head out to Europa a moon of Jupiter to take samples under the ice to see if there was once life. They never returned.... 5.5/8

A Haunting at Silver Falls (US-2013)

horror: A girl is followed by a ghost ... nice start but didn't like the ending... Come on now, why drop the axe and run, keep it with you... who writes this stuff.... 3.0/8

All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (US-2006)

Horror: Many Lane is really sweet and pure so the boys are lined up to uh, well you know. One day Mandy decides to go with a friend to a party at a ranch and shortly after someone is targeting them. Not too shabby!!!! ... 5.5/8

Psycho Gothic Lolita (Japan-2010)

Action/Horror- Silly stupid blood splatter film about a chick who seeks revenge on those who murdered her mother. Way over the top .... 2.0/8

The Purge (US-2013)

Horror: What a great premise that ended up being another home invasion film. There was so much promise lurking here but it was wasted inside the walls of a house. This should of been a film that is difficult to watch and left an uneasy feeling but it failed miserably. In fact, it was outright horrible. I could rant about the failure of this film for quite awhile but I'll just end up giving myself a headache. Well, it made a ton of money which I am sure was the whole reason for it so we will get another tame down money grab sequel. Hopefully someone can make a true film with this premise that is not worried about a PG13 rating or selling out... +1 for the premise ... 2.0/8

Carrie (US-2002)

Horror: No, this is not the new one nor is it the original. This version of Carrie is almost identical to the Stephen King book with the exception of the ending which was changed in order to spin off a TV show which fortunately never happened. I wished they would of stuck with the original ending, oh well.... 4.5/8

Very good analysis of this disappointing film
