West Branch vs Salem. Who ya got?

It's also definitely not something any coach would do in today's game. Saying something like "we want to hit the quarterback" is not the same as the garbage Gregg Williams was pulling in New Orleans. Just people trying to add a little spice to the game tomorrow
I agree. I am not a big fan of Johnson but he is a good coach and I cannot see him doing that..

The artical starts with "It's one of the greatest football rivalries in Ohio High School sports".

10. 1964 - 12-0 Salem
9. 1966 - 12 - 0 WB
8. 1985 - 17-7 Salem
7. 2006 40-0 WB
6. 2015 - 21-14 salem
5. 1986 21-0 WB
4. 1998 21-19 Salem
3. 2003 19-13 WB in ovetime
2. 1973 7-6 WB
1. 1994 28-21 WB in overtime, WB went 14-0 and won state championship

I didn't know Jim Heacock, Tressel's D coordinator at OSU was from West Branch. I didn't realize Kirk Lowdermilk is a Salem graduate and I had know idea Rich Karlis was from Salem (my favorite kicker when Denver beat the Browns in the Drive!!!). I also didnt know that the 2 schools had to stop playing for a while due a big fight in 1986.

It was also interesting to learn that WB used Salem as their home field for several years.

Any ex-players have any good memories?

I was a Salem senior for the 2003 game (I sucked and only got in on special teams and blowouts). I haven’t read the article but I believe a missed FG cost us that win somewhere along the line. Lost that in OT and a game to Canfield in OT that year, that close to the first winning record for Salem since about 1994 at that point but ended up 5-5. Phillips never got Salem to the playoffs but it was a better record in every season to set the future up some, broke the culture of sucking at least.

My wife graduated from West Branch and started her teaching career at Salem. We lived in the West Branch district for 8 years. The WB-Salem game is a pretty intense rivalry. It's certainly not as historic as something like Dover-Phila but I think the intensity is pretty high even compared to some of the more historic rivalries.

It was a tremendous game, my goodness the back and forth was crazy. If you didn't have a dog in the fight you had to have really enjoyed it as well. Would love to see the two point conversion pass play by WB that tied the game near the end of regulation ........ not sure that was a good catch, but maybe others had a better angle that could comment. Both teams could win two or more in the playoffs.

I watched it online. Awesome game. Wish I would have gone. Believe it or not, I was yelling at my laptop (the Salem coach) knowing that Salem was the underdog and was really playing to win the game, when they went up by 7 late, I would have gone for 2. Knowing that HE had a chance to end it on 1 play. That would have put them up by 9. Also knowing that WB had enough time to come down and score as well as now giving WB the chance to go for 2 and beat you. IMHO, that was a huge mistake. Aggressive vs. NOT aggressive. The Salem coach didn't have the ****s to go for 2 and go up 9. And it cost them. And yes, I truly was yelling it and thnking it at the time, not in hindsight.

I was standing in that endzone and saw a video of it and you still can’t tell if it’s a catch but it looked like it, depends on who's side you are on.!!! What a close game- kudos to both teams for never giving up.. I think they will represent the EBC well in upcoming weeks.

Looks like he is juggling it ?
it looked like a good catch live, I was standing in that endzone so I see why they called it a catch. But after watching the video it looked like his feet may have been off the ground when he caught it - at least that's what Salem fans see!! Regardles, what a great play by a high school kid. Johnson should have went for 2 and went up 9. No way does WB stop his son from 3 yards out!

It was a catch. The Salem media company Six-Four-Three Productions posted a still-shot from the video they took. You can check it out on Twitter. It clearly shows at least one foot in and the ball secured. Amazing catch and call by the officical. Classy of Six-Four-Three to post the picture too.

I don't know that a still image is an incredibly useful piece of information when determining if a play is a catch or not
