We needed expanded playoffs for Covid with cancellations. Reduce it now.

That makes no sense. Try in English to express your views.

Not sure what you don’t understand. Maybe you didn’t get the fact that I was referring to the upsets that happened, and that it was a reference to the Headlinesman dumb comments. But go ahead with you insults.

The 12-team regional qualifiers never went into effect.

They went from 8 in 2019 to all in 2020 to 16 in 2021.

From May 20, 2020

COLUMBUS, OhioDuring its May meeting Wednesday afternoon, the Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors voted unanimously to expand the OHSAA football playoffs from eight schools per region to 12 beginning in the 2021 season. The 9-0 affirmative vote was given to a recommendation from the OHSAA staff, which was based on a proposal from the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association.

Then came the Fall of 2020, the Covid season, where all teams qualified by default, so the 12-team bracket never occurred because...

From April 22, 2021

COLUMBUS, OhioThe Ohio High School Athletic Association Board of Directors approved the 2021 football tournament regulations Thursday during its April Board meeting that included proposals from the OHSAA staff to increase the number of playoff qualifiers and change the format of the regional playoffs.

The number of playoff qualifiers will expand to 16 schools per region. In addition, the higher seeded team will host first and second round playoff games, instead of only the first round, before neutral sites are used beginning with the regional semifinals. In the first round, the No. 16 seed will play at the No. 1 seed, the No. 15 seed will play at the No. 2 seed, etc.
Yes I know. It was set to go into effect the year we expanded to 16 and then the OHSAA announced a 16 team format without informing the coaches association.

Oh well that changes the scenario.

Millersport players were intentionally trying to injure Harvest Prep linemen by diving at their knees ?

I saw Hilliard Davidson players doing that against Cleveland Glenville in the state finals a few years back.

so that changes it to retaliation instead of simple malicious intent to injure or "targetting"
It’s a chop block, not intending to hurt anyone. Been legal for years.

Currently the thing that is saving the 16 seed format from being consistent blow outs is a much lower divisor requirement.

i believe in the old format, you had to have a divisor of 8 (play 8 games) to qualify. They removed the divisor requirement during the COVID year, which made sense. However the divisor has never gone back up to 8, I think only came back up to 5.

Would be interesting to see how that shook out the secondary points. I think almost everybody met that 8 divisor amount this year, but we are seeing more teams take a divisor of 8 or 9.

I’ll use Newark Catholic as an example, because I think they are legit deserving of the #1 seed and would’ve beaten these teams anyway. They lost two games this year, I believe due to their opponents, rather than reschedule, they took a lower divisor. Makes sense, get healthy, prepare for playoffs. Not taking anything away from them. Just would be interesting to see how it would have shaken out. I believe it was Ready and Academy that didn’t play. Both took a divisor of 9 effecting region 19’s playoff scenario as well. Just interesting.

dude with anybody not completely dead getting in, it hardly matters except the top seeds get the cream puffs in round one which is ridiculous they put the weakest teams against the strongest, a kind of sadistic FU to the poor team that went 3-7 and beat three teams that had 5 or 6 wins among them 0-10, 1 -9 and a lower division team that went 4-6 is all they beat.

they have to play #1 seed ROFLMAO

and they have to travel on top of it.,

Exactly the point. It was needed in 2020 due to Covid. In 2020 how many teams played a complete schedule? Very few if any. Now that we are back to full 10 game schduled. This expanded playoffs including teams with losing records is a OHSAA money grab.
ok. then encourage your school to sit out the playoffs in protest. have your kids sit out of the games until you get to the final eight in the region if you feel so strongly. or...you could buck up and deal with it.

If by the divisor going back to up to “8”, (technically not the most correct description, but that’s beside the point) you actually mean the minimum game threshold being 8 — it did in fact go back up to 8, instead of 5, this year.

Having teams with losing records . Especially in d-1 make the playoffs is stupid. So we let 3-7 teams get slaughtered by St. Eds. That makes a lot of sense for the hs players. We needed added playoffs during Covid. But it is not needed now and counterproductive for the players as well. I know its a money grab but even reducing it to 12 would be much better. 8 was perfect. not too many and not too few. You had to have a successful season. I guess the everyone gets a trophy mentality has made it to the OHSAA. Does anyone on a 3-7 team even want to play that game? Yea. we get to get running clocked and the crap beat out of us. Bet hey, at the state made some cash. Isn't hs sports about the students and what is good for them.
Three reasons to keep it the way it is: 1. Money 2. Money 3. Money

Stop treating it as a playoff and instead like a postseason tournament. As much as Indiana's system is unpalatable to most of you, it avoids all the arguing you all bring up every season. It's a random draw and it involves every school.

In either setup, if you win, you advance. If you lose, you don't.

ok there were 46 bottom table (under 8 seed) that won.
Most in any Region was 3, R3,R8,R9,R12,R15,R16,R17,R19,R26 (9 regions 27 dogs)
R1,R5,R14 AND R28 had None, Zero
R10,R18,R20 AND R27 HAD 2 ( 8 TOTAL)
R2,R4,R6,R7,R11,R13,R21,22,23,24,25, HAD 1 EACH ((11) TOTAL 46 IN 28 REGIONS AVERAGE 1.6 PER REGION

1 15 SEED THAT WON (LITTLE MIAMI)
1 14 SEED WON (EATON)
7 13 SEEDS WON
2 12 SEEDS
4 11 SEEDS
15 10 SEEDS
16 9 SEEDS 35 OF 46 WERE 11 AND ABOVE (76% OF WINNING DOGS)

(THE TREND BREAKER WAS 13 SEED WITH 7 ) 13 SEEMED TO BE THE LUCKY NUMBER

46 TOTAL

AFTER WEEK 2 THERE WILL BE NO SEED UNDER 10 STILL IN THE TOURNAMENT AND AFTER WEEK THREE THESE WILL ALL BE ELIMINATED

WANNA BET?
St. Johns might have something to say about that.

The original post I made said now that covid is over...we should go back to previous system of 8. I feel that making it 16 devalues the regular season and it does. Just because some upsets occur does not mean those teams earned their way into the playoffs. But i would be fine if we keep it at 16 for every division but 1 since its silly to put a 1-9 team in playoffs. I am not rigid about this. Just stating some facts. The ohsaa will not go back because it earns some more cash.

There's no way the proverbial genie will be put back in the bottle, so to speak. Football is the only HS sport in Ohio that doesn't allow every team in the postseason, but I think we are headed that way at some point.

In hindsight, it sure does. It says they probably had a harder schedule. Do we want the best teams or the ones with the easiest schedules? Part of team sports is to teach kids how to rise up to challenges. That requires a competitive schedule. Harbins doesn't handle that well. 16 teams, does. If a reasonable way to allow the best teams to schedule the best teams and still allow them to show in play-offs what they learned and do it in 8 teams, I'd be on board. Several of the regions had nearly half upsets in the 16 team, 8 game format. For ME, that says 8 teams does not allow Ohio to display their talent.

corny

these kids are exploited indentured servants being exploited by media companies who sell the entertainment value of their games but don't kick back 10 cents to further their education.

high school football is meaningless in the big scheme of things.

the 16-0 state champ school gets the same thing as an 0-10 scrubs team.

or did you not know that?

Another thing I like about the added round is that it allowed for some nearby teams to be matched up, that wouldn’t otherwise play. Massillon vs Perry and Mansfield vs Ontario were the first few I noticed (but I’m sure there are more).

So many with such a narrow perspective. Stow vs St Ed's featured a big bro vs. little bro matchup of local stars that was a great storyline. Over 2,300 seniors in the state of Ohio got to play one more game with their best friends they have played alongside since they were 8. If you honestly care about the $10, then don't go. But I'd be curious to know what you can do on a 63 degree Friday fall night in Ohio that beats the value of Friday Night Lights. The whistles, the bands, the cheerleaders, the cheap concessions. Make no mistake, the senior parents have been friends for years as well - and one - more - Friday - night - honestly can't be beat. Oh, and guess what, LOTS of teams that were seeded 9-16 won games. Bet they remember that for the rest of their lives. I'm really tired of all the complaining. Don't go then. OHSAA won't miss you. But the student athletes will.

One main difference between football and other lets let everyone in playoffs because it is fun to be in playoffs sports is how physical the game is compared to other sports. If you get blown out in a football game, people on losing team tend to get hurt especially when its a total mismatch. when you blown out by 8 goals in soccer or 10 in baseball, people do not get hurt.
People get hurt in those other sports too.

People get hurt in those other sports too.

How many get hurt on chess team? debate? choir?

they are all precisely the same as full contact tackle football : extracurricular activities conducted for educational value in the context of being sponsored and supervised by school district employees.

"educational value" is the ONLY justification offered for full contact schoolboy football.
