WCAL Football 2024

Kirtland scored 33 points in a 8 minute span šŸ˜³ Good 1st quarter before the onslaught began.

Dalton win was UGLY! Offense never looked comfortable and defense couldnā€™t tackle.

Eastwood made the only stop of the night when they needed it. 3 straight runs to Moyer from the 1 and they lose yards.. Tough loss but good showing for the Bobcats

Canā€™t wait to catch these. Gonna have some notes.

I think Dalton has drawn the short stick this year for the worst officiating crews. My favorite non call from tonight's game was a kid from PV picking his mouth piece 5 yards on our side of the line as we snapped the ball but didn't get called for being offsides. I really wish they would go back to the Friday/Saturday format.

That was truly bizarre.

Well Hillsdale dispatched Windham easily, Dalton gets by PV, Norwayne comes up just short in a shoot out. Smithville hung tough for the first quarter but got whooped in the second quarter. It will be Springfield vs Dalton next week and Hillsdale vs Malvern...... it will be interesting to see where these games are played. Two still standing for the WCAL!

PV is a scrappy, physical team that executes well. Their running back and quarterback made first team all district. They are a better team than Dalton fans expected and you heard it in the conversations during and after the game. Did Dalton play their best game? No, but it was good to see them finish out a close game which they had not done in the two close games they had this year.

Iā€™m going to check out the Norwayne albatross, but at 100+ points Iā€™ll need whiskey and some more time.
I think the TD at the end of the first half by Eastwood with no time remaining was a killer. Norwayne played from behind the rest of the game. Neither team could make a defensive stop the second half until Eastwood made a goal line stand.
The teams were almost a mirror image of each other.

My thoughts exactly, Bob.
Really have few notes on this one. I appreciated the play calling on both sides. Looked like a 7 on 7 at times. I canā€™t believe Iā€™ve watched Norwayne get stuffed at the goal line, no time left, game on the line, in consecutive years.

Thatā€™s not a criticism. Norwayne, as a program, has forced us to expect so much from themā€¦ It is also important to remember that the Cats typically have tougher regional competition than the rest of the WCAL (save the Hornets)

This PV gameā€¦ Iā€™m going to eat a little crow hereā€¦ They are definitely bigger, faster, and more physical than I originally offered. Iā€™m currently enjoying their free production on YouTube as Iā€™m gettin quite a few hot mic moments from their fans and even picking up a little YSN commentary.

Notes:
PV looked poised to go blow for blow with a very physical Dalton team. It left a few of them down on the field for their effort, but they brought it. Some of you will recognize the Laker base offense as it was a county favorite 30 years ago. Losing 13-20 to a really decent Girard team should have had me pump the brakes on a running clock claim, but after 3 TD overthrows it was very much on the table.

Tomlinson in the slot.

This officiating crew is laughably the worst Iā€™ve ever seen. Bordering on dangerous for the kids. Both Lakerā€™s & Bulldogs. PV losing a close (in score) game with a crew like that will be with them for the rest of their lives. Daltonā€™s 1st score should have been blown dead even with a change of possessionā€¦IMO

Iā€™m a little concerned with the gameplan & preparation. (Which I was curious about) This is probably where expectations of Dalton and THAT roster are NOT doing a new coach any favors. He hasnā€™t been this deep in the playoffā€™s, and this may sound hypocritical but, Let your freak flag fly, Ray. In this instance-this game and against this opponent- they had no answer for the deep ball. The young OB needed to dial it in early not to shut it down and go balanced. Tomlinson outran the coverage even when they doubled him up with safety help.

Dare I say, this might have been the perfect prep for whatā€™s coming? Gotta get by a VERY WELL coached Springfield team. (If youā€™d like a chuckle, and youā€™re a sicko - check the tape around the 2hr and 20min mark.) Thatā€™s a clean shoulder to the chest. Calm down folks.

Hearing HBO is wanting to come into Wayne county to film Smithies Hard Knocks this summer. Iā€™d tune in.
You know what? Iā€™d pay to watch it.
If it were not so hard to fund a media company that could put out such local and in depth and high quality content, Iā€™d already be running something like it. šŸ˜…

Good synopsis @Hoist the Black. Your take on the officiating was spot on. They took both teams out of any rhythm whatsoever. As I said in a previous post, it was good to see Dalton finish out a close game against a surprisingly good team. Iā€™ll let your comments on the game planning stand on their own.

I used to do ā€œwrite upsā€ for a ton of games. (Before I devolved into snark addled S#i+ posting) Iā€™m a little rusty, but I missed it. Iā€™m wrong quite often, but I miss the breadth of content we used to enjoy in the paper on Saturday mornings. The box scores, the coaches interviews, and the key plays descriptions.

As far as my opinions on coaches and/or programsā€¦well, I did say Iā€™m wrong. A lot. (My wife approves this message)

Yep, I wear out Google trying to get a few nuggets of information. In the big picture it doesnā€™t matter much, but I donā€™t hunt, fish, have a wood shop or tinker with old cars, and need to occupy my time.

I know the rules in a shoot out are there are no rules, but how, HOW do you let a team score from 60 yards out when they get the ball with 20 seconds before half?!?!?!?

Harkens back to some comments about coaching from several pages ago. Reminder that these are not "professional" coaches and sometimes they get caught up in the moment. Absolutely no reason to bring pressure when all you need to do is tackle the ball carrier in bounds.

Also, #44 is a MAN. If that dude wasn't in the hospital a month ago, he probably runs for 350+.

Agree completely. Last play of the half. Position players to guard the goal line.

I agree with everything except the first touchdown. Right or wrong the referees set the precedent on Dalton's first drive that they weren't going to blow the whistle. As players you are taught to play until you hear the whistle.

Welp. Iā€™m going to switch games. Iā€™ve seen too many Kirtland landslides to know what this isā€¦ hell of a season for Smithville. #PhilStays
It was a true Jekyll and Hyde 1st half. I did a little math in my down time.

1st quarter Kirtland ran just 9 plays for 47 yards and had 2 fumbles (lost 1) 5.2 ypp

2nd quarter Kirtland ran 26 plays for 281 yards, 4TDā€™s and a FG. (33 points from the 7:23 mark on) 10.8 ypp

I honestly believe that Smithville had the best linebacker group in the WCAL this year, and the best overall LB in Leach. They flashed at times but never really showed it šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

I was trying to say they swallowed the whistle. The play ā€œshouldā€ have been blown dead. There was no ā€œloose ball/possessionā€ marker thrown and everyone on the field stopped. Dalton absolutely did what they should have there. Thatā€™s just how bad that crew wasā€¦

The last time I felt genuinely happy and even proud of a Smithville team might be the Sate Finals. (Or beating Amanda-Clearcreek) Kids didnā€™t fold. šŸ’Ŗ

Hillsdale fans. Where youā€™re playing Friday night.

Hillsdale (-12) vs Malvern
Dalton (-13) vs New Middletown Springfield
(per Fantastic50)
Malvern has a really good QB and loves to throw the ball. They'll challenge Hillsdale offensively, but the Falcons are also the 2nd best team they've faced all year. Hillsdale isn't Garaway, but if Lucas was able to put up 26 on the Hornets have to imagine Hillsdale can hit 30+.

Dalton NMS is interesting. Both teams were picked for "easy" wins in week 12 and combined to win by 3 points. Dalton should handle their business here, but not sure if it's by 2 scores. Dalton's offensive design has been really impressive this season. Unfortunately, they've also show that the staff doesn't seem how to coach the game vs the scheme (still don't understand why they stopped the power run against Norwayne). If we were making a list of the best small school coaches in Ohio who hasn't held up the trophy yet, there's not many folks ahead of Coach G at Springfield.

Talent: Dalton > Springfield
Coaching: Springfield >>> Dalton

Springfield and Dalton should be a classic playoff battle between 2 very good, but not quite state champion caliber teams. Springfield as noted, is well coached and physical.

Springfield has a very good RB who has burst onto the scene this year. Heā€™s not overly big or fast, but his best attribute is just how hard he runs. The passing attack is adequate, qb is hit or miss and they have decent WRā€™s but their bread and butter is pounding the rock.

Defensively they are excellent against the run but have a major Achilles heal thatā€™s shown up twice now, and thatā€™s going against a spread offense with a good pass attack (see Ridge and Toronto games). Both Ridge and Toronto were similar with decent QBā€™s and talented guys out wide that can make plays (one of MRā€™s receivers went 4/167 and a td).
