Glad to see he was re-hired. Schools make head scratching moves all the time. Fort Frye is currently trying to push out Dan Liedtke. He has won nearly 800 career games between the boys and girls, taken both programs to the final four multiple times (including this year), the court there is named after him. He's retiring from teaching and another teacher is trying to take the position even though he isn't finished coaching. Weak administrations allow these situations to happen.

For anybody here who still has an interest in this situation, these guys from the Youngstown area apparently have some additional detail from the machinations leading up to DeShields initially being let go.

No comment from the Athletic Director? This seems strange.
There's nothing to comment on. These are year by year contracts. It always amazes me when people get mad about this. The only thing guaranteed is if you get a contract, you're the coach the next season, period.

Sorry coming into this very late. These situations are so messy because schools are handcuffed on what they can say. To make it simple though as I said earlier in a post, these are ALWAYS one year contracts. There are no guarantees a coach is going to be back the next season. They can win 0 games or with the state finals, nothing automatically renews their contract. So many people simply don't understand this. Now this school didn't have to backpeddle. They could have just stuck to their initial decision, with NO EXPLAINATION.

To me that's where some of the messiness could go away. Now in the last post with the guy getting the emails. To me obviously SOMETHING happened for the AD and board to react the way they did initially. I think even coaches quote in one of the articles kind of make it appear like something happened. So the million dollar question always is, what "winning percentage" allows you the latitude for certain infractions? And that's not necessarily a girls high school coaching thing, it's a in all jobs. If something happens at work, can you be fired? My answer always it, "it depends". :ROFLMAO:

So at least for now it seems like the majority will be happy with the outcome of this and everyone can move on.

Was able to read the text messages and other information related to the Coach DeShields situation, that was released today.

Just disgusting.

This stuff is happening more and more though with school board members. Most get away with it.

This situation just won't go away. Here's the BOE president trying to defend her actions:

So, basically, she is still saying DeShields was wrong and that she used her elected position in an attempt to non-renew a coach because she felt her daughter deserved more playing time..... Would that be a quick summary?

Exactly...

Coach D didn't tap a girl with a rubber band and I'd suspect he didn't tell his son to make sure to go around in the weight room and tap girl athletes with a band. So you have one alleged suspect...his son.

Kanagy's daughter was not the alleged "victim"....but she made her daughter out to be a "co-victim".

I'd suspect she believes her daughter has been a victim in his basketball program. I'd suspect she has wanted him out the door for a while and this situation came to light and she felt like this was the perfect opportunity to try and get him removed.

Clearly, based on the community support he has been an extremely positive influence. Clearly, a lot of people want her head so she must not have been much of a positive influence in the community over the last 14 years.
