Walt DeShields has been told he will not be coming back as coach because they want to move in a new direction.
-20 years without a losing season
-350 + wins
- Multiple league championships, including the last 2 yrs.
-22-3 each of last 2 years
- 2 final fours
- Multiple regional appearances


Not sure what a direction would be other than down!
 
 
This is absolutely insane. There has to be an administrator or board member who's kid didn't get enough playing time. One of the nicest guys and best coaches around.
 
What is wrong with schools!!! Coach DeShields is one of the best. Hopefully, he will find another gig if he wants to. Just won an award at the State Championships. Idiots

Has success made us want mediocrity.
Very clear there is inside complaints about PLAYING TIME!!!!
 
Terrible news. Really good coach. Likely, the replacement has already been decided upon. If not, good luck finding a solid replacement (not likely to happen). West Branch has now been red flagged. And the victims...the kids that want to win and be good players.
 
Interesting tidbit
There are two players on team with same last name as board members
One player with same last name as Super.
I have no idea of the relationships but something to chew on
 
From what I have heard, the school is moving away from staff that are considered to be “retired-rehires”. Coach seems to be part of that category.
 
maybe it’s time for a change. send him over to the range!! the branch is breaking in front of our eyes. can’t wait for board meeting in 2 weeks!!!!
 
I would bet if you asked him if not having a teaching job in system ,at this stage in his career, was a deal breaker you would get huge NO!!!
He has built a great pension over his 38 years of teaching.His wife is an administrator in the system so her package at retirement will be comfortable also. Money/job security would not seem to be the catalyst for him to look elsewhere.
And as stated in Salem News article "he was caught by surprise". He knew his teaching job could be potentially cut.
This job cut did not quell his passion to keep coaching The Lady Warriors.
 
Strange; a good and successful long-time coach let go primarily by the school board in the off season. There’s got to be more to the story,…

Just heard from a source that Walts son TJ got employee of the month. this truly shows how true and genuine this family is. As a lifelong quaker my heart hurts for walt he owned our team for the longest time. The branch and their corrupt systems always find a way to mess things up. Quakers rise up!! lets bring walt to the good guys!!!!!
 
The guy just went 22-3. The only thing that stopped him a few years ago from a state title was covid. Girls basketball is the one constant bright spot in WB sports over the last 20+ years . They should be naming the gym after Campbell and DeShields Definitely need to look in a new direction, but it’s not the head coach of the girls basketball team. What an embarrassment.
