Brian Thompson, the CEO of major insurance group UnitedHealthcare, was shot to death at point-blank range in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning before he was set to attend an investor conference, according to police.

The masked gunman, who remains on the loose, appeared to be lying in wait and shot Thompson several times from behind, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference.

The shooting, which was reported around 6:40 a.m., appeared to be a "brazen, targeted attack" that was "premeditated," Tisch stressed. But the motive remains unknown, police said.

You have to think there are cameras covering every inch of midtown Manhattan streets these days. Sounds like it was a sophisticated hit and shooter fled into Central Park.

Will be interesting to see where this goes.

I'm wondering is this will be a real life episode of Law & Order where someone had a grudge because a loved one had passed away without getting enough covered care.
My thoughts exactly. CEO earning multi-millions annually becomes the vendetta target for a loved one that did not have coverage accepted, or something. Crazy world we are living in...

Insurance denying life saving treatments is a real thing. I am dealing with it right now. People you give up on life after unnecessarily losing a loved one do some crazy sh_t.

Agreed. This murderer was going to get to the CEO no matter where he was. Seems to me he tried to pull a move like they do in Asia and just disappear into the crowd after fleeing.

Lots of people were back packs. I wear one t from my car to my office at work. I make my self feel better by saying it’s a cooler looking man purse. I have my laptop, mediicne(s), lunch for the day in there.

Lost my brother this way. Capitalistic healthcare is the best.

You and your daughter considering taking matters into your own hands now?

Shells at the scene had written on them "deny", "depose", "defend" - which is the title of a book about insurance company corruption.

I've dealt with it as a provider. Because providers know insurance law and have some clout, the corruption takes a different form.

It doesnt take a genius to figure out that my $175 billing is a drop in the bucket to the insurance company, but 1000 $175 claims from many providers is real money, and if they can hang on to that money for 30, 60, or 180 days, that's good for the shareholders.

So it starts with a denial and now you are in a process to correct it. Emails are exchanged, additional documentation may be requested. Often they need a report. This takes weeks to months. Further delaying steps can be taken, depending on how far they want to take it.

I eventually learned the magic words: "This claim has been documented properly and you have a contractual obligation and under ORC number/section to pay this claim promptly. If it isn't, I will be forced to file a complaint with the ODI." And, voila - a check appears.

We attempted to get on a first name basis with some level of claims managers and would send them goodies and flowers periodically. That seemed to help us at times, but you are going up against a bureaucratic machine that has different goals than you in processing a claim.

This process had me and my staff wanting to choke company representatives at times.

Murder never was considered, but I can see how if a company hurt Grandma, someone who is unhinged to some degree might see it as justified. But it's not. That's why God made lawyers.
