SW Classic

It seemed like there were a lot of kids that took this meet a little too seriously, and I believe that the kids that didn't suit up or rest will surpass the kids that did significantly when it matters at districts and state.

Also the X kids did not rest for the meet, and it didn't appear that the Manta Ray or Countryside kids did either.

Everyone is looking way to far into what kids were wearing suits or shaving. In the end, wearing a suit at a mid-season meet has no effect on the end of the year, except maybe a positive one. If a swimmer has a suit they're not going to use in any more championship meets, why not wear it? Look at this meet for what it was, a great rehearsal for the end of the year. And as for resting, I'm sure none of the top swimmers rested seriously enough to affect their end of the year performance.

Yeah, I know cac (Hodge and Nymberg's club team) rested about a day and a half. Also, TOG, wearing a suit in season does not effect end of season results. "Taking this meet a little too seriously" really?? since when is it bad to take a meet too seriously? In case you're wondering, taking an in-season meet "too seriously" does not effect end of season performance either. If anything, swimming fast at classic just builds confidence going into the more important meets.

and SwimBrave, I don't think that article is relevant in the least bit because I think it's a pretty well-developed custom to only shave for taper meets.

I argue that it can actually hurt a swimmer's confidence because if they wear a suit and are rested for this meet then there isn't much time to drop at the end of the year for that swimmer. Ive always thought it is best not to have the feeling of a suit until you have the feeling of a taper and a feeling of a shave as well. That being said, the elite athletes around the world are able to rest and suit up for multiple meets in a short amount of time and are able to perform at high levels each meet, and I think it's save to say that Cooper Hodge and Pohlman are at that elite level. Also a day or two rest isn't going to effect an individual's performance significantly at this meet, but I still feel like people put a little too much emphasis on a meet in January and think that could be a mistake.

yes, depending on the amount of work you've put in prior to the meet would determine how much rest will help. I agree a lot of people cannot drop after they rest once but I think a one/two day rest is just enough to be able to feel ok in the water and with the aid of a suit I think its just enough to be able to swim well. I think it varies person to person whether or not wearing a suit during the season is helpful or not. And when you said that people take this meet too seriously I thought you meant the swimmers about their swimming. I now understand that you mean that spectators put too much emphasis on the results of this meet to determine who is going to go fast at the end of the year. I agree with this. For example, Kevin George went a 1:46 in the 200 and a 4:48 in the 500 and placed 8th and 10th respectively. But nobody would doubt that he wins the 200/500 at the district level. all in all, this meet is not a good determining factor of whether or not swimmers will excel at the district/state meet.

The Dayton club swimmers were not rested for this meet - they were/are in the middle of heavy training.

As for why some would suit up, I think it's to try and break some records - in front of a vocal crowd and even some cameras.

Also, some of these kids view the Classic as a test run for States - there's a vocal crowd, cameras, a great announcer, a classic old venue. If they do well at Classics during heavy training, then they feel confident going into Canton.

Great point Swimfan.. Outside of Ned Reeb and possibly Viking, swimmers from the other districts don't get to experience this caliber of meet before Championship season heats up

Any particular reason Tommy Cope didn't swim Sunday?
