Springboro seeks 7th Coach in 10 years

So your saying there’s not a systemic problem with parents being too involved? Hold backs, complaining to administrators, and willingness to accept tough coaching?

Also, I disagree about your take on Holweger-he vs was a great guy, but most all of the parents complained about his desire to make the kids accountable and be a good teammate. I didn’t think it was warranted, but it was there a lot.

Yep. Kostoff too demanding, Holweger, Youker too nice. The only coach that will work is everyone gets to play equal amount of minutes, shots, smiles, kids held accountable unless it's their own. Like everyone has stated it's a train wreck

Agreed, it’s also not worth beating it to death.

If your a normal human being….., the title of 7th head coach in 10 years should have stated the facts.

Agreed parents way too involved. But you can’t have it both ways. Kostoff constantly criticized Boro parents from day 1 to everyone including the kids. BUT hired 3 (!!)unqualified parents on staff and leaned heavily on certain parents to do the things he had no clue about, not being a Boro resident or parent or educator. Then shocked that sone of those parents turned on him…It was a no win situation = bad hire. Administration drove away 2 previous very good coach educators for whatever reasons = major error= slippery slope of where we are now.Holweger and Youker not “nice” they both had very reasonable standards of discipline. Repeat: parents did not drive away the previous 3 coaches.Kostoff was the reason Kostoff was asked to leave.
and won’t even get into X and Os that would take years Princeton offense no offense rare occasional zone, bizarre rotation, daddy ball rotation, retaliation against parents through the kids for perceived slights etc Petty and unprofessional

How did the kids play the last games of the season without the coach? Looked pretty free and relaxed. 2 well liked coaches quit as soon as Kostoff hired them because they didn’t like Kostoff breaking OSHAA rules and treating boys disrespectfully. A senior quit mid season because of his mental health from Kostoff’s lack of empathy to players needs. Although I don’t agree with the parents having power to fire in this situation I can assure you there were FAR more than one set of parents complaining directly to administration. 5 or more had complained since his first season. Specifically about his treatment to the KIDS. Another pitfall of not having an educator in coaching. Further problems were parent coaches and too many parents being OVER involved and Kostoff allowing it. If parents in Springboro are such a problem why don’t other Springboro sports (football) have similar problems?? Although basketball is a different beast this was a BAD HIRE from the start. Admin should take responsibility which I think they have and we will see if the next hire can bring the program back to its value as with Holtry and Holweger. Get a acceptable coach that earns parents player respectand parents will complain less

Speaks volumes!

No.
There will always be unhappy parents at any school/ sport but Boro parents are not to blame for 7 coaches in 10 years Bball
That's not completely true. A track coach was fired 2 or 3 years ago the kids liked him and they were doing well but a parent didn't like the way their child was being coached, complained to administration, subsequently, the track coach was fired shortly before the season ended so that is not true and with 7 coaches in 10 years there has to be some kind of "helicopter parent" issues hovering over the program even if it's one or two sets of parents.

Well said.

Springboro has actually played in 3 D1 District finals winning 1 in the last 10 years, losing to Moeller in 2020. The last 3 hires had 1 year of Head coaching experience which is a recipe for complete failure. Boro Football or Girls basketball would never hire a young unproven JV coach cincy outsider non teacher with no head coaching experience. Kostoff had no prior Varsity head coaching experience and ran some form of the stubborn slow down princeton offense which was awful. After Kostoff, the players seemed happy, free and became a very tough out late in the year. They bring back 4 of their top 5 players in Greer, White, Grevey and Brown. All of them guards and 3 of those guys can shoot over 40% from 3. Greer could be a Mr. Basketball type player in Ohio. This is a hidden Gem program with a great feeder system and youth program. Tons and tons of athletes in this district. Too much talent in this Springboro to have this problem, sounds like there has been alot of interest from high level coaches in SWOhio for this job to coach in the best league in the state of Ohio ... The GWOC

My 2 kids were on sports in the area for many years I find it very hard to believe one family can get rid of a coach.there is always more to the story.
the current admin has many long running successful coaches in Boro. Girls bball, baseball, football, volleyball all stong programs with the same coaches

Quick math but looks like Boro is 2-24 against Centerville/Wayne/Fairmont/Springfield in the last five years. I believe three different coaches in that span, makes me think the coach might not be the whole problem.

A tough out? You mean like losing to Miamisburg, Beavercreek who Kostoff beat? Real Tough.... They couldn't stop a nose bleed once he left. We get it - you didn't like him as a HC. Just stop with the bashing & admit that when you have 7 Coaches in 10 years it cant always be the Coach. This is the Boro delusion coming out, they want to win but none of them have won anything in their life ; but they all know that it's Coaches fault & what he should have done. Entitlement to the max. Just focus on your new HC & how you can find everything wrong with him

Parental helicoptering/meddling along with weak administration that buckles to parental pressure has to be an oversized influence when you run through 7 coaches in 10 years. Back when I coached junior high basketball in the GWOC Springboro had a very obvious helicopter parenting problem at that age group in spite of having good junior high coaches, some of whom were in the building.

They can and should be consistently pretty good in basketball, but I'm not sure there's much appetite for the discipline, toughness, etc. that is required to offset other schools such as Wayne and Springfield having better basketball athletes. From what has been said here, it seems to me that Kostoff's approach/demeanor was a very bad match for this position and the baggage that comes with it.

Anyone that's established in a good situation would be wise to not touch this job, even if on paper they would be moving up the ladder. Odds are you'll be out of a job in 2-3 years because it seems to be a daunting task to have to both change the culture and be competitive while also meeting unrealistic entitled expectations of making everyone happy in Springboro.

Good thing CincyHoops1 Isn’t Kostoff cause then it would definitely sound like a Coach problem - Sounds likes CincyHoops1 likes to blame others a lot. “IF” he were a coach he should probably find another side gig away from parents and kids in general.

I’m not trying to be rude Bobcat4ever, and as much information that Cincyhoops1 has.

you are exactly what I would guess is the problem in Springboro. There are very few people that could take Kostoffs accountability In that district, even if he had a foul mouth like you say. Having your kid play & score is way more important than winning.

You keep blaming the Coaches. I'll keep blaming Springboro Parents and Administration. Because again your missing the title 7 COACHES IN 10 YEARS.

Kostoff is extremely intense, tough to please, ran a slower style offense I get all of that.

Youker was too nice, didn't hold them accountable.

Holweger perfect, but didn't work out for whatever reason

I suppose we could just look at each year's concession stand deposits and the Casino Night deposits to see if there is anything remotely specious about the entries. These amounts are made up of popcorn, candy, and soft drinks from the concession stands and games of chance, silent auctions, and beer sales from Casino Nights. What are the odds the deposits are in nice big round numbers?

Coach Kostoff how intense are you?

Go to Troy Holtrey and beg him to take the job back. You people have no clue what the hell you are doing.
They screwed up when they got rid of Troy because of the kid that went to Illinois thought he was not being used correctly and complained to higher ups. Then the next several coaches that were hired were daddy ball coaches, they stayed until their sons graduated and left. Starting back about 3 years ago some of the best players went and played at the Kingdom because they new there was not a fair shake coming with the coaches they have had.

That and he wasn't a very good coach, consistently snatching defeat from the jaws of victory with quality, talent laden teams over a nearly 20 year run.

Ha! While you are right about lack of tournament success, I think Springboro would be very happy right now to have a typical Holtrey season!

I think you responded to the wrong post. I’m really not following what your saying but I’m good with that
