Some Jaguars players 'aren't thrilled' with head coach Urban Meyer and his 'college-like' ways

Urban Meyer isn't used to losing. He won over 85% of his games in 17 years as a college head coach, boasting an overall record of 187-32 over that time. That may be the reason why Meyer looked more stressed than the average NFL coach during his team's second preseason loss this past Monday night. Adding to the Jaguars' winless preseason is the news that rookie running back Travis Etienne will miss the entire year with a serious Lisfranc injury.

As Jacksonville prepares for its preseason finale against the Cowboys, CBS Sports senior NFL writer Pete Prisco offered some insight inside Meyer's first NFL training camp. As one would expect, Meyer's first training camp has had its share of turbulence.

I appreciate what he did for Ohio State and winning the National Championship but I've never been a fan of his football style. IMO, it was too gimmicky and he won with overwhelming talent most of the time.

I hope he does well in the NFL but I just don't see it happening. It is very difficult to coach when everyone is on an equal plane. Gimmicks might help for a time but making good decisions about personnel and developing those players is far more important in the NFL. That is a tough transition compared to college.

Always preferred Jim Tressel over Urban myself

In all fairness, he recruited that talent. IMO, there’s no better coach at communicating the Xs and Os, but his personality is not cut out for the NFL.

The old "boom mic" rational?

Seriously? It's an empty article. Someone needing to invent something to say in order to write an article about something else. It's a nobody quoting another nobody saying nothing. ? It sounds like the second nobody got his bestest buddy to say something so it can be said "i've heard."
"He's got to change a few things. He brought a bunch of college-like things to the program which I don't necessarily agree with. I've heard some of the players aren't thrilled with them either."

That’s stupid. Meyer brought OSU into that top tier in college football. There was a solid decade where OSU was laughed at for not being able to beat the SEC and they would’ve never shaken that label without Meyer.

Thanks for the feedback

Jeez dude lighten up, are you pi$$ed off 100% of the time? He didn't say Tressel was better than Meyer, he said he preferred Tressel. It wasn't a "take" he stated a personal preference.

Was Meyer a better recruiter who elevated the program to a higher level? Yes. Was Tressel a really good coach and a more likeable person? Also yes. Personal preference is not something you get to judge.

FWIW, Day seems to be a recruiter equal to Meyer, a better offensive mind, and less of an a-hole. I hope he sticks at OSU a looooong time.

The biggest issue with poor professional sports teams is the players have too much say in the operations of the team. So far, there has been few Jag players who've earned a right to even comment on how the team is run. Maybe they should just stick to doing the best they can with their job each day.

Urban Meyer took Ohio State from being a regional power to a national power. I just wonder how he's going to handle the health side of being a pro football coach when being an uber successful college coach nearly killed him.

They've always been a national power.

I can’t see him even finishing the year as head coach. His presser to apologize was uncomfortable. He has never looked remotely interested in coaching since he took the job.

That is college football my friend. There are only 4-5 schools annually who have enough talent and depth to win the national championship. In college sports, it's all about recruiting, especially in football where numbers prevail. There are teams who's #1's can hang with the Ohio States and the Alabama's but it's the injuries and the 2nd and 3rd units that make the difference.

And you are 100% correct about him in the NFL, but it has more to do with his demeanor and his personality. He's never lost before. Not significantly anyway. When you see "immediate" results everywhere you've been, and that means less than a year, you're not cut out for the NFL. In the NFL, there's a different pressure, it's more about being competitive than winning. Sure making the playoffs and winning championships helps. but being competitive is what keeps you in the game. Andy Reid took years and years to win a SB, but his teams were good in Philly.

Looks like he is acting like a college kid bar hopping?? I don't mean to throw this out there, but is it possible this is Urban and his wife knows it? I mean he's out and about all the time, well known, lots of parties and gatherings. I don't know anything about their marriage, but I'm just wondering.
