Solon Football 2009

Fine writing there Gramps. A frozen Milky Way might be a tad cool at Shaker tomorrow. Forecast- 60's and rainey. I'll opt for a bottle of Horlicks Malted Milk Tablets, and maybe a box of Vicks cough drops (circa-1949,) afterward, chased down with Hires root beer.

Exposure at who's expense?

WOW! We've discussed how TV broadcasts of hs games can showcase your team; well sometimes it works well for one at the expense of the other.

Every time I peaked in at last nights game, it seemed like Chardon had the ball. That's the team that TV exposure didn't work out so well. They stunk! My, has Chardon fell from what I remember. Go West Geauga!

Couldn't watch that very long. With the Dolphins in a lightening delay and Abilene Christain waiting for the storm to end, I got to see a Little League game won after a wild pitch and exciting Indians come-from-behind win...again!

I heard that the reason many juniors didn't go out for football was because they didn't anticipate getting much playing time and as a result they decided to play lacrosse. I thought lacrosse was played in the spring. Maybe they're playing on a club team. Any truth to this rumour?

just wondering if any one knows anything about #60, he is listed as a senior at 6'1 260 but I have not seen him play ??

That's John Miller, who's actually listed in game programs at 6-0, 277. He's playing his first year of football for Solon. I don't know if he's new to the school or not but because he has played so little (even in scrimmages), I suspect that he hasn't played football since middle school, if at all.

I have heard the same thing from a few different people. Lacrosse is all the rage with many kids at Solon High School, particularly among kids in the junior class. Never mind that lacrosse is played in the spring; football, in the fall.

I recently talked to a Solon coach (not a football coach) who told me that most of the kids who defected from football were the guys whose hearts weren't really in it, and who probably would never have been starters.

There's one exception, of course. I heard that coaches were disappointed when Ryan Wurst gave up football. The feeling around the program was that he had a chance to become a first-rate DE down the road.

Northeast Lakes All-District Teams include 7 Comets

From the school site:

The Associated Press has released their Northeast Lakes All-District Teams for 2009 with many Comets on the list.

Senior Brandon Nelli was selected on the First Team Offense. The First Team Defense includes Seniors Darryl Baldwin, Donald Williams, and Cameron Stuart.

Senior Jake Voigt and Junior Kyle Hammonds were selected on the Second Team Offense along with Junior Chris Humphrey on the Second Team Defense.

Congratulations to these Comets for being honored among the best in Northeast Ohio.

Great job & season guys! It was fun to follow your weekly efforts!

More post-season awards

Congratulations to Darryl Baldwin for being named the PD football Defensive Player of the Year. Well deserved considering how the PD explains the double & triple teaming on him and so much of the offense moving away from his side. This is another honor for the Comet team too because it is difficult to win an award on a losing team.

Former Comet linebacker Joe Janasek was awarded the University of Dayton Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year at their awards banquet. UD generally red-shirts freshmen and they run plays in practice of the upcoming opponent. He probably will beocme much stronger after the winter workouts and see some action next year.

Steve Valentino was also named the teams Most Valuable Player at the banquet. He was All-PFL as a receiver last season and All-PFL & MVP at QB this season, the first time that ever happened for a position player. After moving to QB for the second game, he led the Flyers to 7 consecutive victories. He missed the school's single game passing record by one yard but led the league with 281.6 yards total per game.
