Penn State @ Ohio State

PSU came in claiming they had the same level of talent. They don’t. Their offense looks more like Iowa, than Ohio State. Their D is of course legit. Hopefully they can beat Michigan.

Just don't get it...
Lots of teams go for two now when down 14 pretty late and scoring a TD. The thought process is you should convert at least 1 of 2 two-point tries. If you hit the first one, then one more TD and PAT wins the game. It’s en vogue in the NFL.

If Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State all finish 11-1 Penn State would win the tiebreaker due to cross divisional opponent win percentage. Basically because they played Iowa who has the best record.

On the 2 - it's however you want to manage your options. If your team is hurt and tired and you don't want to go to OT, you go for 2, hope you get the onsides, and win it with a miracle TD and XP. If you don't make it, you still have the chance to get the onsides, get your miracle score and go for 2 to tie.

My opinion would be PSU should have kicked and you make the choice to tie or win after those series of miracles.

Buckeye defense was outstanding until they went prevent mode with 2 minutes left.

Still a mistake (luck?) determined the out come: the Penn St scoop and score that was called back because of penalty. That could have been a dagger for the Lions.

How’d that better balance for Penn St work out for you?

I just figure if you score 2 TDs in 29 seconds, you have alot of momentum and would embrace overtime.

Right now they win the tiebreaker. it was very good for us that Minnesota just beat Iowa. That’s a 2 point swing in our favor.

Question: What is Penn State?

A program that could beat the Big 2 but usually doesn't?

Firmly the 3rd best team in the B1G with a large gap between them and the rest of the league?

Merely the best of everyone not named Ohio St and *ichigan?

This is a very good matchup. I can make a very good case for both teams as the better of the two. Lol

It has the feel of a game where the most turnovers, a blocked kick, or a big return turns the game one way or another.

Penn State's advantage is in its defense. I don't care who they have or haven't played, those guys are very good. But Ohio State's biggest advantage is it's receivers, esp Marv, and esp if Egbuka is healthy. Day had a plan that gutted Georgia's defense last year. If he does that here and the Bucks execute, Ohio St wins.

I like our inexperienced QB over theirs. Allar has great stats and has performed well, but he hasn't seen what he is going to see Sat. It would be unusual if he wasn't affected by the best talent he has played against this year in the most hostile environment he has seen. But it's not impossible that he could just ball out. Franklin has been very conservative and protective of him. I think he needs to hit explosive passing plays to increase their chances of a win. It would be really weird if he suddenly starts slinging it down field 30-40 yards successfully in this game when he hasn't done it to this point. But it's CFB, so weird happens.

This game also has a little personal edge to it. Manny Diaz made some cryptic comments a few weeks ago. He evidently thinks he has the players and scheme to stymie Ryan Day's offense and Day and his gang are probably highly motivated to teach Manny some manners. That should give us the best from both sides of the ball.

Can't wait. Should be a great one.
This aged fairly well for one of my pre-game pontifications - which usually don't. Lol.

Ohio St is clearly the better team.

Turnovers really didn't have a major impact on the game - although that fumble sack and TD called back for def holding on PSU could have.

I still have the same opinion of the PSU defense: very, very good unit.

My opinion of Marv is: wow. He was THE difference in the game offensively.

Allar performed as I expected. Maybe a little worse, but his receivers weren't getting open for him and the play calling was curious. I have no idea what Yurcich was trying to accomplish.

We had the better QB, but Kyle was hot/cold in the first half. 11-14 in the second half was big.

Manny Diaz: I wonder what exactly his "strong opinion" of Ohio St was and what it is now. I do think his team's offense did not help his unit out.

Ryan Day may need to embrace winning with defense and playing to it with conservative, complimentary offense. I don't miss Tressel-ball, but a slightly more aggressive version of it that may be the best way for this team to win. FWIW

Yep. Dude is not good. So dumb then for their fans to have wanted Clifford gone last year.
Never made sense. I have a pretty good eye for talent and I never saw what people did in Allar. Was awful in the All American High School game and in his few appearances last season did not impress me at all. He's just tall with a very strong arm. Doesn't have anything else.

So is Ohio State's defense really that good, or is Penn State's offense simply that bad. I mean did they even try to push the ball downfield at all? The buildup for the Penn State QB made it sound like he was something else - Ohio kid right? And what is it with Penn State QB's?? Who's the kid a few years ago who was always touted as all world and never accomplished a thing there, and flopped in the NFL? Was it Clifford? Nope it was Christian Hackenberg...
