#PACtion™ 2024

Since I'm new to PACtion, give me a little history on it since this seems slow right now. I like the top 25 games from the last 25 years so far and look forward to reading it going forward.

Tell me who are the best players that have come through PACtion. Did PACtion ever have a heyday with multiple State runs or tons of D1 recruits in a short period of time? Any info/stories I would love to hear.
Marquel Parks at Orrville was the most electric player I've ever seen in person on a high school field. That team with Logan Domer(?) at QB was extremely explosive on offense.

Ethan Wright at Manchester not only carried that team on offense, but he was a difference maker on defense as well. I'm sure he holds a bunch of records at Manchester.

In the last 6-7 years we've had Orrville win the State Title....Canton South was in the Final Four this past season...beyond that, Northwest in the Regional Semi (sweet 16) in 2020

***Needed an edit

Poochie Snyder at Canton South the last few years is probably the best QB the league has ever seen....

As @thePITman mentioned, Tre Tucker at CVCA - currently playing in the NFL if that says anything....

Kyle Snider at CVCA also needs mentioned - was an absolute load at RB and a game wrecker at MLB, currently in the starting lineup for Kent State Wrestling as a freshman.

Tre Tucker from CVCA is in the NFL and had some TDs last year for the Raiders.
@Mikefln - these guys beat me to it, but as for "glory" years, 2017-19 were pretty hard to beat because you had all 3 of those players in the league at the same time. To top it off Tuslaw (D5) & Loudonville (D6, football only member) were playoff teams in 18 when the regions were still only top 8 teams

During that 3 year period, those 3 teams played 38 (Manchester & Orrville) & 33 (CVCA) games. CVCA ran into Perry in back to back years. Orrville won title and lost in regional finals the next year. Manchester lost in regional finals to the eventual champ TWICE & to a final 4 team their other year. In 2018 when Orrville won their title they only beat CVCA by 3 and lost to Manchester by 36 while giving up 67 points!!!

There's been plenty of other great teams & runs over the years, but that window will be hard to beat as a high point in the overall PACtion2024™ success on the field. For that one year the PAC was MAC-ish.

PS - I couldn't remember most of this so thanks for the motivation to look it up. (y)

What a great trip down memory lane this morning. Tucker graduated in 2019 (after the 2018 season) and yet CVCA might have been better the next two years, believe it or not. And yet, they still didn't win the league. The 2020 team opened with losses at Fairless - which arguably had the best teams in school history in 2020 and 2021 - and to Northwest, which was a state title contender with Jordan Mick at QB in 2020.

Despite covid, CVCA got in 11 games in 2020 and finally got over the Perry hurdle. It was a euphoric night at Perry, as it had been three years in the making. The Pirates offense never saw the ball until about eight minutes to go in the second quarter. Perry's running back in that game, Jaylen Anderson, was headed for West Virginia, and their QB in that game was a freshman, Brayden Richards. This past fall, he helped lead them to the Division 5 state championship as a senior. That 2020 game is always a fun watch.

CVCA ran into Lake Catholic the next week, and a halftime lead evaporated. The loss stung and eliminated the possibility of a rematch with Northwest the following week. Mick played injured against Lake Catholic and Northwest lost a defensive battle, as the Division 4 bracket opened up and the Cougars advanced all the way to the championship game, losing on a field goal as time expired. That 2020 season could have seen either CVCA or Northwest in that Championship game spot if the ball bounces differently a couple times in either game against Lake Catholic. Both teams were that good.

The lasting memory from that season for CVCA - beyond the third game of the Perry trilogy - was the final game - The Greatest Game No One Saw - of course, because of covid attendance restrictions. CVCA and West Branch hastily scheduled one of those post-elimination "regular season games" that were a one-year thing because of covid. West Branch was at the start of their high-powered offensive run that lasted about three years. The Warriors shocked CVCA and got up by 28 points three times in the first half. But CVCA came all the way back to win 58-55. I go back and watch this game from time to time, and I force myself to watch the first half, because the fun is knowing that the second half is coming.

With @Mikefln's post this morning ... it's the perfect segue into a BONUS PAC Game of the Year post. The goal of this series is to prompt discussion and help us count down the weeks to the new 2024 season. And after last week's second post of the series, @bootleg reached out directly and asked if I was planning to go back to the start of the PAC to recap any games. Perhaps if I had started with 35 weeks left before the season, I would have. But the calendar dictated that this would be a 25 games in 25 weeks series. That said ... looking back at that initial PAC season in 1989, when considering PAC history, the discussion will always start with Manchester. And ... when you look at the numbers, was there ever a better Panthers squad than the 1989 edition?

The 1989 Panthers were unblemished heading into the Regional Final. Manchester recorded 8 shutouts in 12 games and outscored their opponents 482-36. Has there ever been a more dominant PAC team? Here are Manchester games.
1710342930329.png

And yet, despite the dominance of the Panthers, that PAC was not a one-team race. The league championship was decided in Week 6. You see, the East Canton Hornets weren't just another opponent. This edition of the Hornets was the best team in school history. The teams were both undefeated heading into Week 6, and the Hornets finished the regular season with just one loss - of course to Manchester:
1710343317215.png

The Canton Repository tells the story of the events of Friday September 29, 1989. The Panthers forced seven! turnovers, but there was, of course, some of that Manchester mystique at work, as the game was not without a bit of controversy as the men in stripes made a crucial call that went the way of the visitors. It probably wouldn't have impacted the final result. But you never know. Read on:
IMG_7344.jpg

I'll let @bootleg take it from here, as he shared with me his personal recollection of the night and the key play:

"That year was the first and that game probably had more people at it than most the games in Stark County."

"The second half kickoff was a big play - the rule is the receiving team has to have a chance to catch the ball."

"Manchester guys all ran back to set up return - the ball hit the ground making it a free ball. The ref was out of position running back as well and said EC caught it in the air, which they didn't. The problem was the kid they said caught the ball may have touched it before it hit the ground but he was diving for it and a different kid is who came up with it. It all happened so fast, hard to see what actually happened but it was right in front of France and the Manchester bench and old Koach definitely was in the refs ears. LOL It paused the game for a hot minute but the result gave Manchester the ball on the 35 going in. If EC gets the ball where they recovered it - they would have had about a 40 yard field to score. End of game EC switched to what we would call a spread offense and was having some success."

"Both teams hit all game - and Leland Phillips was a talent and lived up to the billing."

"Mihalik and Joseph were a tough combo running the ball. Thought this Manchester team was as tough as any other that came after and had great success. Warren JFK beat Manchester 7-0 I think. JFK was stacked and was pushing title game several years in that time period."

The Warren JFK Regional Final game was actually a 14-6 JFK victory. The Eagles advanced to the Division 4 State Championship game before falling in the final to Wheelersburg by a touchdown.

But let there be no doubt as this series continues that the 1989 Panthers squad should have a special place in the pantheon of greatest PAC teams since the inception of the conference. Thanks to @bootleg for the prompting to look this one up.

Back tomorrow with regularly scheduled Week 3 of the series as we'll look at the Game of the Year from 2001.

Hey now I get to finally say I saw Lake win that night...lol...we beat New Philly at New Philly 6 to 0...started the season 0 and 2...lost to Garfield 21 to 0 and to Wooster 27 to 14...Wooster won the second year of the Fed being a split league....they had a real good team with Andrew DeLoach, a great running back....he was All-Ohio that year with Robert Smith from Euclid and THEE Ohio State

Hey you guys opened with Western Reserve in 89....they actually were a good team...I saw them play Linsly at Western Reserve in 90....in 89 Linsly beat Western Reserve 3 to 0 in Wheeling that year...I saw Linsly play them at Western Reserve in 90...beat them 25 to 6...my cousin played for Linsly 88, 89, 90...Linsly went 9 and 1 in 89 and 90, for the size of school they were Western Reserve was good....do you remember much about your game that year with Western Reserve...and do they still have a football team?

I feel like James Harrison has to be the all time best PAC player correct?

That was East Canton's schedule, which opened against WRA in 1989.

WRA dropped their football program after the 2020 season. Here's the Yappi thread on that development.

Interesting article on James Harrison....Clyde Feldman has worked at almost every school in NE Ohio....lol

Look up the 1912 Fostoria Redmen. You'll find them were the greatest high school team of all time.
I will not do any such thing....I lost a state championship to them in 1991...lol...Kidwell wasn't that good but they had a sophomore tailback by the name of Damon Moore...he was actually second string until the starter got hurt in the first playoff game that year..went to play for Ohio State and drafted by the Eagles

I've been to Fostoria and it has a level of tuffness that Hartville will never comprehend much like the PACtionTM commentary of this desperado:

Didn't Justin Zwick play at Orrville before going to Massillon? I would have to imagine he is an all-timer unless if thatcwas before PACtion?

Orrville was in the Ohio Heartland Conference back then with many hot game telecasts on WMFD TV 68 Mansfield with mid wit, mid card jobber announcers like Jeff Alan and Mike Greene who were Koko B Ware level talent at best.

Greene and Alan came from the same football announcing used car lot as Scott Davis WOAC TV 67, Canton, and Big Time Sports TV today. George Kellas had too much talent and spunk to be associated with those mid wits.

Zwick played his frosh year at Orrville (maybe this sophomore year, too, I can't remember anymore) before becoming a Massillon Tiger. But again, Orrville was in the Ohio Heartland Conference back in 1998 and 1999 playing the likes of Mansfield Senior, Mansfield Madison, Ashland, Lexington, Marion Harding, and Wooster.

This was the Orrville 1999 schedule, one year removed from winning the 1998 state title:

It is tough to decide on many of your posts to give a like or a laugh to. So many of your posts are comedy (Koko B Ware level talent/same used car lot) then the rest you spit out knowledge. I must admit I am confused most of the time about which to respond with.

RIP George Kellas. In the part of Pittsburgh I am in, I would occasionally pick up WTRF 7 and WTOV 9 (didn't have cable), mostly WTOV 9 and I would watch games even in the 90's. Back then they had their game of the week after the news on Friday or Saturday morning, so I just stayed up late after my game to watch but missed it if it was replayed on Saturday morning. My memory is a little fuzzy, but I think I caught a few Bellaire playoff games that way too. That was my introduction to Ohio HS Football. I remember George Kellas from those telecasts as he wore a Steelers Stareter's Jacket a lot. I remember having one of those and thinking it was cool that a sportscaster was wearing a jacket that I had too.

George Kellas was the first high school football announcer that I ever observed who received cheers from fans when he simply walked by the stands before the game started. I witnessed that at a Bellaire Big Reds playoff game back in ancient times. They saw George, they cheered him. That was a first for me to see.

Most TV or radio announcers at the high school and small college level are masters at: A) faking a smile while they get treated indifferently by the schools B) faking a smile or interest when spectators complain about their broadcast or want to fill their ears full of low level bloviating C) kissing gluteus maximus at the school or with fans to receive free food D) driving in winter storms during basketball season and E) avoiding whiskey bottles hurled in their general direction or F) consuming said whiskey bottle.

George Kellas surely had his moments but he earned a fan following, deservedly so. His passion was undeniable.

Didn't know former Steeler Great was a PACtion guy. I knew he was from the area there but never thought to ask. With that said Coventry is not in the PAC anymore. I have seen comments alluding to why, but what is the full story there?

@Smoove Mooves please doith the explanationfy and the justificationfy of all that. Sorry for my poor attempt to speakify your language. I will offer amends by putting in a good word for you with the Concessionary Chickies of the WPIAL if you ever make it out this way.

There ya go, Mike. You made your own PACtion2024™ connection. A Jose Davis led Bellaire beat Orrville back in the 95. Maybe you watched it? I wasn't at this game (who drives to Zanesville if you don't have to?!?!), but a former coworker had a kid playing in the game and he made sure we all knew this video existed.

My experience with George was having relatives in that area and I would see him on the news with sports...he really gave the local high school sports a great coverage...didn't matter what sport...I got the impression he was the one who drove the coverage that way and helped get the advertising to pay for the games.

Without question he did.

That Dover team was a very good team....Lake lost to them 20 to 14 in 2 OT the 4th game of the season, missed a field goal in the first OT that would have won it... both teams knew that we would see each other in the playoffs later that season

Didn't know former Steeler Great was a PACtion guy. I knew he was from the area there but never thought to ask. With that said Coventry is not in the PAC anymore. I have seen comments alluding to why, but what is the full story there?

A variety of reasons.

1) the incidents with Harrison cited in the Sports Illustrated story and his mere appearance in PACtion rattled some people; sadly, the incident at Tusky Valley with the fan behavior and Harrison's salute would have been quite a sight and social media spectacle with today's camera phones.

2) Coventry started pulling in mucho open enrollment students from the Akron City Schools back then thus their enrollment started to creep up in numbers.

3) I'm sure Koach was somehow involved; maybe Mo didn't like Koach's pickled peppers and it offended him.

4) I'm sure James Harrison and/or Coventry was not well received by the Justus Junta.

All of this is ancient history now, and Coventry should be a serious PACtion2024™ candidate if they want to rejoin.

It's dumm - an Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt level of dumm - to hold grudges from 30 years ago.

The last time I checked, this is PACtion2024™ and not the Balkans with their ability to hold a grudge and make stuffed peppers.

But then again....go on 11 Warriors.com to their internet fan forum and mention Eric Musselman as a candidate for the now open OSU basketball job and see how many replies you'll get from Buckeye fans about his dad Bill Musselman and the brawl with Minnesota over 50 years ago.

Those people will still hold their grudge and blame the kid for the father's incident 30 years from now when they're riding around on their tricked out hoveround.

We didn't have the tuffness they had that day....first team we could not block one on one for our running game...the other thing didn't adjust to their running game...they had thrown a ton in all the game film we had...we picked off Kidwell I think 3 times...our linebackers couldn't handle their 2 running backs...they were a tuff football team that year

I can't say I saw that game in particular, but I know I watched one/two of their state playoffs/title games. Damn that audio is bad. LOL
