Ohio State Football 2023

Curious more haven't commented about the suspicious Hinzman benching.

One of the comments he made on his podcast appearance that really jumped out as interesting to me was the management of the postseason calendar. I believe you get 15 practices (someone correct this if wrong). He seemed to indicate that they'd only had 6 real practices so far as of the podcast date of December 20th. The implication then would be that post UM game they didn't do much for 3 1/2 weeks and had a lot of workouts and time off instead of practicing, and jammed most of their allowed practice time into the week or so before the game...and they may have left a couple days on the table.

If that were true, IMO that's pretty much a negligent command of the calendar and may explain why Hinzman was benched. It sounds like things may have been very laid-back and "country club" like for almost the entirety of the bowl prep.
This tracks.

One podcast claimed that Hinzman got the yips in pre bowl practice. If true, why couldn't they just switch Hinzman and Jones on the line?

I will never tell you Day cannot recruit. The stats do not lie and as I have pointed out ad nauseum OSU has dudes. More than most. So when I hear that Sawyer and JT or Simon has been a disappointment I cringe because I think it has more to do with coaching.

Those three teams you mention have not won titles because they have not been able to recruit like OSU. OSU is the only team outside of the SEC and Clemson of late, that has been able to consistently keep up. Oklahoma, LSU, and Texas all have had one offs, but not consistent like OSU.

While I think these last three UM teams have been very good, I do not think they are that much better than many of the teams Meyer faced and it has been proven in their bowl games. The 2016 was very good, but the difference was OSU was better and better coached. That UM team lost 3 games buy a combined 5 points (OSU game in two OT). The last two seasons UM has played NO ONE and then beats OSU, gets a ton of street cred in that win, and then gets shown up in the playoff. They have Day's number because even though they are at a disadvantage with talent they run the ball, play very sound physical D, and do the little things right.
Ryan can recruit but he cannot recruit the most important positions (OL, and DL) unless there are guys highly ranked from the state of Ohio there.

You know I am not a fan of Knowles. Buit why is it these other 3 schools can't recruit as well as OSU. Hare brain is a good coach he won at Stanford, 49ers, and he used the TP very well. I wish Day would can Knowles but that is not going to happen, but I also know things could be worse OSU could be just like those 3 other schools, again great coaches are hard to find.

No, Michigan isnt very good. The Michigan teams that Bruce and Cooper fielded were better, a few of the teams that Tress faced were better and one from Urbs time was better.
But if they have been winning due to cheating, how can you count OSU losses to Michigan against OSU?

I can't understand why he hired Frye from UCLA. When has UCLA been known for stellar o-line play in recent history.
Hate these hire a buddy or relative hirings instead of hiring the best available coaches.

If what Hinzman was saying was true, they weren't practicing with enough regularity for there to be a pattern of him having trouble and command of his snaps until within a few days of the game.

They're either using it as a convenient excuse to have benched him for his comments, or they are incredibly stupid and shuffled the majority of the OL while only giving them at most a few practices to gel and adapt before the game.

Always a challenge for sure to find a good coach. ND has struggled since Holtz and UM struggled post Carr. I do believe that timing mattered. Recruiting really started to take off on a national level in the mid-late 90's and early 2000's and that is when UM, PSU, and ND went through their struggles. If there was on thing Cooper could do it was recruit. OSU hired Tressel, who by and large put a fence around Ohio and sprinkled in elite guys from elsewhere and then of course Meyer went full blown national landscape. I think OSU has always had the jump on the rest of the B10 in terms of resources and knowing how to use them (best facilities, lots of money, national branding, using alumni networks, etc.).

Regardless, you are right, there is no guarantee but I believe there would be a long list of highly qualified coaches who want to be the HC at OSU, especially considering the cupboard is not bare, yet.

Ryan Day is the first OSU HC since who (?) with no previous HC experience (Woody, Bruce, Cooper, Tressel, Meyer all had HC experience prior). Day is a great offensive mind, but not a great HC.

Most times when AD’s make hires they typically get guys they are familiar with or involved in one way or another in their circle. Unless you have a booster that comes out and helps foot the bill for the buyout of the old coach and salary of the new
Let's hope the new AD comes from UGA then.

Because he has 0 cache and has never been a head coach before. Elite coaches don’t want to coach for/with him.

The next AD IMO will be someone with Ohio State connections. There are a lot of people that have risen through lower positions in the Ohio State athletic department over the last 15-20 years to become ADs elsewhere (Washington State, UCLA, Pitt, etc.).

How good of a coach was Hairball considered at Michigan pre-sign stealing?

How about making Parker Fleming AD? It would help Ohio State football just getting him off the coaching roster.

Easier to defend a play and get the jump on the offense if you know what is coming.
yes but i mean like whe the San Diego State guy got thrown to the ground by a Michigan DB. Thats not as a result of cheating lol

I state facts how did OSU avg. 425 yds of offense and nearly 400 vs scum if the o line is so bad. Huh troll.
My explanation would be Michigan plays OSU with a bend don't break mentallity because it works. Give up yards, make them go 80 yards in 12 plays. Then when the field shrinks, try to force FG's. That formula has had success so the Michigan DB's don't get torched with 80 yard 1 or 2 play drives. But that helps to inflate yardage Michigan is willing to give up. It's basically the matchup and what works for Michigan best against OSU.

Big 10 loses 2 more games.big 10 was overrated.
Maybe over rated by some, but not by everyone. I think we all knew in August the Big10 only had 3 teams. And we also knew that 2 of those 3 were starting brand new QB's. That's tough. The SEC and PAC 12 were better. But even the PAC12 had much better QBs returning. So if anyone over rated the Big10, that's on them. And I am a Michigan fan. But if I'm being honest, Michigan would not be undefeated if they were in the SEC or the PAC 12.
