I'm hearing the the Wildcats are looking real good and IMO one of the favorites to win the league. Can't count out South Range, Poland or Girard this year. I'm hearing that Girard's skill is very fast as witnessed in Track this year. Niles has the stud RB and decent QB and receivers. Hubbard is a big question mark. So is Lakeview.

This a good league. I'm sure as with 99% of the teams statewide, it will all come down to the trenches and injuries.

I got a question about competitive balance . When the numbers came out for each school I was surprised to see Struthers had by far the most CB kids in the league at 21. Same number as Fitch .. what exactly does that mean. Does that mean they got 21 open enrollment kids this year ? I tried reading into it on ohsaa but it’s a little confusing . I think the next highest in the league was Girard with 11. The lowest is Poland at 0

Poland is closed enrollment. Idk if it means 21 kids or how it’s sliced up but it means they have the most than other schools mentioned. What always annoys me with Struthers and open enrollment, it’s rare for a OE kid to contribute on the field

Ya I don’t know what’s the difference between OE and competitive balance . Says Lakeview has 3 but I couldn’t tell you who they are lol. As far as the league ya I’m hearing Struthers is the favorite then Girard .

My biggest question mark team is Hubbard, none of the posters have been around too much this offseason which isn’t like them, I think girard will be solid with sims, defense should be the question mark, south range is still the favorite to me until they get knocked off

That's the thing with South Range too....people might think that they are benefiting from open enrollment, but the truth is that most students that enroll at South Range through open enrollment are kids with behavior or discipline issues at Boardman, Salem, etc. Very few are "star" athletes that are looking to play for another school.

Yep I think that’s more schools then not

…In football I agree.

However, They seem to have quite a few in girls sports.
Regardless, Nobody in the NE8 appears to have a big advantage in football due to open enrollment
So if the CB number is 10 that’s just 10 students not necessarily 10 football players I believe .

Word around town is Hubbard is very, very young this year. They might even start a freshman at QB for what I'm hearing. I'd be surprised if they win 3-4 games this year...

In other words, "no hype for the young Eagles" in 2023.

8th grade QB they had last year was solid, I wonder if they’re gonna keep that wing T again

No. CB #s for football are only those that are on the football roster. Non athletes that transfer to the school do not count.

How does that work if the roster isn’t finalized until after the numbers come out or do they use last seasons?

I think the top of the conference is going to be South Range and Struthers. In what order I don’t know. But everyone else after that I think. Hubbard is a ? But with an extremely weak out of conference schedule, they should win at least five games, regardless. Girard has the potential to be pretty good. Poland is a big? The team seemed to have no identity last year and did not seem like a typical Poland team. Like they were not a physical football team at all and it showed. Then you have Lakeview and Niles. I don’t expect much from them.

I think people are underestimating Poland this year. I think that they will be a much better team this year.

They gotta be able to complete a pass, they haven’t been able to get the old playaction working since switching offenses, they need to play to their strengths, something they weren’t last year. I think they’ll be competitive but not a league contender

It goes by students not players that’s correct
That is not correct. Athletic Directors across the state turn in all rosters. Next to the athletes names is a number based on criteria such as where they attended middle school, where did they attend high school in 9th 10th or 11th grade. If the athlete was on roster but out of district for one of these things they are counted as two. This becomes their competitive balance number. Students not playing a sport but in the school are counted for base enrollment only.

I don’t know what they have coming back but pav coaches a soft brand of football and it showed last season. Maybe it’ll change.

Lakeview guy commented on here and then deleted it. Please share your thoughts. If you feel Lakeview is being disrespected it’s probably because they haven’t won much since 2017. Especially in league. That’s a long time.

I remember last year people getting on south range because their CB number was 10 and they ran the table . So ya Struthers should be the favorite with 21 CB . More than doubling any team in the The league . , and don’t tell me none of those kids aren’t gonna start this year . Heck they damn near added a whole open enrollment football team . They should win the League with numbers like that lol .

I don’t remember anyone getting on south range for CB, I’d like to see those posts if you could find them and post them. Only time people ever had something to say was when Hubbard was moving Youngstown kids into the apartments by the stadium that’s about it

There is some interest this year at Lakeview. Don’t think they will win it, but they should be much better. Athletic QB , running back from JFK transferring back home, some size n the line with big tackles and a 6’4, 242 TE, and some skill kids. Not sure what systems the coach will run but he has some kids that might compete.

Dont think they have talent like the last time Lakeview won the league, lead by the grandson , but they aren’t helpless as last year.
