Wow! One of the best high school games I have ever seen. Goalies were outstanding for boths team. The goals that were scored were of high quality.

Agree, it was a great game. I was surprised how well Colerain hung with Mason. At times the Cardinals dominated play and I think they earned 5 corner kicks in the 2nd half.

One comment that the Mason fans may not like to hear but if the Comets are going to make a serious run for the state title they are going to have to toughen up big time. I saw to many dives and to often Mason players were mimicking the ref reaching for his card every time they hit the ground. As they go deeper into the playoffs, the refs will allow the play to get rougher so Mason better be ready.

Well good luck Comets and beat Elder!

Watch 9 news tonight

I saw a Channel 9 van at the game.
Hopefully they will show some highlights of the Elder/Wayne and/or Mason/Colerain.

Mason is a good team, Colerain showed alot of heart tonight though and it could have gone either way. Mason's attack is very lacking and they "flop" alot. Mason's fans are the whiniest and rudest I have seen this year. Have some class, you have a fine team.

Congrats to both teams on a great season and best of luck to Mason next week against Elder. A win, and it completes the the GMC sweep of the GCL.

Way to go Cardinals on an AWESOME season! No shame in losing to a team as good as Mason.

Colerain versus Mason

With all due respect to Colerain, and as a fan with no ties to either school, I felt like I was watching Arsenal/Barcelona versus a rugby team (at various times during the game). The on the ball physical stuff is one thing -- and, I agree that there will be plenty of this for Mason as they continue forward -- but all the physical stuff after the ball has gone away is just stupid and unnecessary..

Colerain played with a lot of heart and did even play in the 2nd half. Still, there was so much going on after the ball went away.. Good luck, Mason, you are still the class of Cinti..

I don't really understand these comments that Mason needs to toughen up. At 17-0-2 I think the record speaks for itself. Whether you find them tough or not they continue to win. No matter the type of game they continue to find ways to come out on top that is the sign of a tough team, mentally and physically. Congrats boys, well deserved.

As a side note, what is the story on Colerains first goal. From where I was standing (very close to the play) the ref called Scott for a dangerous play and had his arm raised for an indirect kick. When the shot was taken the offical's arm was down and it looked to me like it went straight in. Does anyone know why it was called a goal?

Good call soccerfirst! First off that call was little rough... the ref originally called the free kick as indirect and then after the shot went into the back of the net he seemed to change his mind, a little weird, but it's whatever.

Its not "whatever". The refs have been lackluster at best. That was a huge goal. I was watching the kid from Colerain take it, and he continued to look at that ref(I suppose looking to see what his arm was going to do), because at first it was up, again questionable call, but nonetheless dangerous play. Fine, deal with the call, so as the kid watches, the ref drops the arm(quickly after the call), and after a pause the kid realizes he has a free shot, which by the way was a sweet set piece. Point being, the Mason coaches ask for an explanation, and this is what they get, " I called a trip"! A trip! not a sole fell down within 100 yards of that ball! Bottom line, the refs have got to let the players decide the game, which means the refing has got to get better. Even the Elder/Wayne game was not great. That ref wanted to take center stage, it ain't about him........ Get it! This is the first time in years where I am almost losing interest in HS soccer because the officiating has been so poor...
On the postive, great game by both teams. Even though Mason was not at its best, Colerain did take advantage of this and played lights out. Unlike the first matchup they came out and played Mason in the open field..good decision! Great coaching, for even though they went down 2 quickly they never abandoned the game plan. Both Colerain goals were great shots.. Play was a little "cheap" at times, and I hope some of those players grow up a bit and realize they don't need that to compete...

Sorry, but I think you're being a bit naive here. I agree that Mason is a great team and is having a spectacular season. But last night the Comets came within a whisker of losing to a team they were clearly superior to soccer wise because they were more concerned about the ref calling fouls and awarding cards. The run from here on out is going to be brutal. Tuesday the Comets face a physical Elder team and if they get by the Panthers, they have to take on the winner of the West/Beavercreek game. The weather is likely to continue to deteriorate (cold, windy & wet) and the refs will increasingly allow teams to "play" - which translates to more physical play.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for Mason to beat Elder Tuesday night and I hope the whole Cincinnati area soccer community comes out to watch this game and send a signal to Columbus the we are boffo box office down here!

Seriously though, unless you're working there is NO excuse for soccer fans not to get out and watch this game. The weather is supposed to be fantastic (might be the last good weather of the season) the stadium is easy to get to and the soccer will be great.

Colerain/Mason game was awesome. Colerain played for their lives. It was fun to watch. Mason gets to play in another awesome game vs. Elder on Tuesday night. Everybody should come out b/c this will be a classic. Ranked #1 and #2 preseason and postseason.

Colerain played dirty

I don't have a player on either team. I was there to watch a great soccer game. As one poster said Colerain kicked, elbowed, intentionally pushed kids down when they got beat a lot of it occuring after the whistle was blown. They purposedly went for the player instead of the ball on numerous occasions. The ref let the game get out of control early.

We are all used to one or two guys on the team that play the game that way, but Colerain had 6-8 of them. I admired their tenacity but not the dirty play. I was near the concession stand when one of the Colerain players cleated a Mason player in the b**** so I saw that close enough to know it should have been a red card.

Mason was clearly the better team - better trapping, passing, more shots on goal, but they let the physical abuse fluster them and lost their cool at times. Colerain's physical play almost let them get the win over Mason.

It was a good soccer game.

Can't wait for the next ones on Tuesday night.

I heard that 2 of Colerains players got 2 yellows. Anybody know who that was? Just curious...

Hood was ejected on his second caution.
His first caution came in the first half for commiting serious foul play and the second was in the second half for persistent infringement.

#1 (don't know the name) & Kuhlman both received one caution.

Thanks for the reply soref.

I don't have a player on either team also but funny how I saw it different!!! Mason flopped so many times to get the call it was ridiculous and it worked. If your talking about #10 from Mason, he is just a punk!! He can't shut his mouth in any game he plays in. He took the kid on Colerain out and the kid from Colerain flew up in the air and while he was in the air his cleat hit #10 in the face. That was not intentional!!! You can't stop yourself in mid air. Then with seconds on the clock #10 flopped right in the box to get a call and a penalty kick didn't work though the refs missed alot in this game but they knew he was flopping to get a call. He does that all the time!! He should have gotten a card for flopping. Watch in the Elder game Mason will do the same thing. The sad thing is Mason is a really skilled team and they don't need to do this but I guess they've gotten away with it for so long and they know it works.

You were watching a completely different game then me. I saw a Colerain team that played real soccer. I also saw a very lucky Mason team. I saw 20-25 plays where Mason should have been carded for taking dives, one of which directly resulted in a goal. Mason fans also need to loosen up, they were lobbying for a foul every time a Mason player slipped on the turf.

Mason deserved to win the game, but got extremely lucky with their 2 goals. One was on a blatant dive and the other on a missed offsides. I loved watching Colerain play though, they played good, physical, real soccer. If there were European refs Mason would have had 1/8 the free kicks they had that night, and 3 less goals.

The ref did let that game get out of control though, he actually caused it to get out of control by calling so many touch fouls. If it weren't for the refs that game would have been more of a game and less of a reflection of his hunger for power.

hmmm another bitter fan after a loss to mason. I'm starting to see a trend!

Elder08, are you going to be bitching after we beat you tomorrow night?

I'm not bitter at all... Colerain lost because Mason beat them. The third goal, the one that counted was a fair goal. I am very proud of Austin Morgan, he made the right play on the ball, I would have been upset if he had sat back and waited for the shot but he came out and made Mason score rather then sitting back and waiting for it.

Wow! You really don't have a clue, do you?
If it wasn't for the ref calling the fouls that needed to be called, this game would have turned into an all out brawl instead of the soccer game that it was supposed to be.
Pretty much everything that everyone is saying about this game is correct.
Mason was flopping and asking for a foul on almost every contact.
Colerain was playing very physical and dirty at times.
But in no way did the center official hunger for power.
He made is call, spotted the ball and got out of the way and allowed them to play. He didn't grandstand, raise his voice for all to hear, or do anything to pull attention to himself.
People seem to think that when officials do a game that they have some sort of agenda.
What you don't understand is that we don't care one way or another who wins the game.
Only one official on that crew had even seen those two teams play this year, so they had no reason to react one way or another to anything that went on in the game.
You need to realize that the officials have a "job" to do when they are on the field.
That is to uphold and enforce the rules of the game that is set forth by the OHSAA.
If you don't like the way that those rules ruin the game that you think needs to be played, then complain to the state.

I've reffed soccer before, not OHSAA, but soccer... What did I do? I let them play and only called fouls on blatant misconduct. Like I said, I probably would have called 1/8 the fouls that ref did, BOTH ways. The whole point of the game is to let them play. Soccer is a physical sport, and I have never seen a team or fanbase want more fouls called then Mason's. They don't seem to understand that it isn't basketball.

Try officiating that way in high school and see how fast your game gets out of control.
There are many things that have to factor in on how tight you call a game.
You can't call every game the same.
And you definitly can't just go out there and only call the fouls that are blatant misconduct.
If that was all that you called, then all you would do is hand out cautions and ejections all game.
Because that is what you are supposed to do with "blatant misconduct".
I would suggest that you pick up a rule book, go to a rules meeting, or go to a recertifaction class for your USSF (if that is what you did) and learn something.
I am not saying this to try to be rude or put you down.
You definitly will learn something and hopefully understand that you cannot call a game that way.
And as an official, you can't listen to what the fans are yelling or asking for, and there is only so much that you can take from the players.

I guess I should have said that I make it known before the game that I want if it's clean I'll let them play, but if they take advantage of it I can be a real pain in the arse. Most of the people I reffed respect that and keep it relatively clean, and when there's an obvious foul I make the call and make it known that it better not happen again. Not loudly, but so the player who committed the foul knows that I mean it. I guess I'm just lucky I've never really had any problems.

i go to mason will u please not say stupid comments like this...from what i can tell u dont play on r team so leave the talk to the players and dont put any more pressure on us then there allready is...theres no need for that

A lot going on

There was so much going on in that game it was difficult for the refs to see everything. Unless they could be on both sides at the same time, it was hard. There were more fouls, dirty and clean to keep the refs occupied the entire game.

If the Elder/Mason game is as physical it will be something to watch.

Don't you love it...elder08 doesn't play for Elder and i go to mason doesn't play for Mason. However, they are both starting fire that is not needed for either team.
