Linden McKinley 77, Mifflin 0

A mandatory Cols City League game. Linden and Mifflin have played twice. The first time in December was a 37-36 win for Mifflin.
Linden is 7-7 while Mifflin is 1-9 going into Tuesday nights game with first place Northland.

Back in the day Mifflin was Mifflin TWP and they played in a league with Gahanna , Groveport, etc.

Africentric plays in the CIty League South and they have rolled up scores of 79-1, 95-8, 84-3 and 81-3. Some of these schools may elect to opt out of the state tourney. Its been done before.

Also, I read today that CPS had over 100,000 students in 1971 and now its around 41,000. It won't be long until the Olentangy Districts passes them! There are also a lot of charter schools in Columbus.

I wonder how long it will be before some of these schools drop girls basketball? Problem TitleIX is the only reason some of them have it now. The talk about a shot clock might push it over the edge due to expense and finding expertise management.

Are you saying the first time these two schools played Mifflin won 37-36 and this time Mifflin lost 77-0? Something drastic must of happen to the Mifflin team for this to happen.

Yes, Miffin lost their last game to Northland 64-8. No idea how they beat Linden the first time (their only reported win).

I often read misinformation as it relates to these scores. Technically these games arent “mandatory” unless a conference makes them play the games.

I had a long conversation with a few coaches about this around Christmas and found some information that seems to check out……

Leagues have total discretion as far as who plays who in these games.

For instance - Loudonville is currently ranked #1 in RPI for D4 in NEO and has won 8 Mid-Buckeye Conference championships in a row. It’s a pretty weak league. This year - they asked the schools in the league to let them out of contracts to add more competitive games for both sides. Everyone agreed. Loudonville got out of games with Mansfield Christian, Lucas, Crestline and Central Christian and added Warrensville Heights, Port Clinton, Colonel Crawford and Akron Ellet.

The OHSAA also allows schools to play cross level match-ups. Schools can play their JV team against another school’s Varsity - and it has no impact on computer points.

With that being said - Berlin Hiland, who is very good every year and has won 25 or so consecutive league championships in the IVC, which is also a very poor league - asked out of games and the league did not approve it.

Why a conference would make these games be played is beyond me. Why schools would not try to mutually agree to get out of these contracts in the fall is beyond me.

A reality of the situation though is that you are not going to find many coaches who give up guaranteed league wins and go play games that they could lose - against better competition. There are also athletic directors and assignors who don’t want bothered with finding replacements for these games. Realistically - there are levels to every conference in Ohio and if teams really wanted out of these lopsided games, they could get out of them if the leagues allow it……

Africentric plays in the 8 team City League South. This gives them an opportunity to play 14 league games and 7 games against top instate
and out of state competition. Their 22nd game will be for the City League Championship against the City League North Winner. I have always said they should be excused from the city league in girls basketball but the prestige of a City Championship trophy must be their incentive.
