Kent State University fired football coach Kenni Burns on Friday after an undisclosed investigation into his two-year, 1-23 tenure. The university placed Burns on paid administrative leave on March 27th, days before spring practices began. Offensive coordinator Mark Carney will serve as interim head coach for the upcoming season, with a national search for a permanent replacement to begin at the year's end. Athletic Director Randale Richmond stated the university's priority is supporting student-athletes and ensuring a positive and competitive season. Burns' dismissal follows a winless 0-12 season in 2024, the fifth such season in Kent State history. Prior to Kent State, Burns served as Minnesota's running backs coach. The Golden Flashes open their season against Merrimack on August 30th, followed by challenging matchups against Texas Tech, Florida State, and Oklahoma.
