The following appeared as a feature on the Solon schools' website:

Jake Voigt was one of 10 area athletes honored as a 2010 ESPN Cleveland Student Athlete of the Year. The awards banquet was recently held and Jake was one of 10 finalists. Jake was rewarded with a $2,000 scholarship from Burger King and WKNR.

Congratulations, Jake!!

Saw Mount Union's legend last night at Stow, Larry Kehres, THE COACH! Hmmm, who was he there to see? Jake? Alliance is close by Comet fans.

But Dayton is a great fit also, Jake may follow in Steve's wake. Yowza!

Solon has its 3rd Flyer

Congratulations Jake on your committment to play football as a Dayton Flyer

Joe Janasek and Steve Valentino welcome you to a program of good football and a good education. With three of you at UD, the Comet faithfull for sure will have one eye on the Flyer's for the next few years.

Great news!! Jake will fit right in at Dayton. His parents graduated from UD and he'll continue Solon's tradition of sending outstanding student athletes to the Flyer program.

Congratulations, Jake!! :)

Hudson Tackle joins Jake

Hudson High senior offensive tackle Tim Pallay has commited to Dayton.

The young 17 year old is 6"3" - 250# and still growing. He protected the blind side for QB Piekarski (Duquesne commitment) and some day with his quickness & athletic ability, will fit right in with the Flyers spread offense.

The Dayton roster now will have boys from Mentor, Medina, Mayfield and Hudson playing with former Comets.

Spring game is Sunday April 18th!

Dayton's Spring Fottball game

Grandpa

I attended the UD spring football scrimmage. The day was gorgeous and I met up with both Joey Janasek's dad (Tim) and sat with Frank and Linda (Steve Valentino's parents). Frank and Linda have to be so proud because for the second year in a row Steve was named Captain.

I am going to say this with great admiration for Steve and his leadership and skills, he is the BIG MAN ON CAMPUS at Dayton. He truly is the leader of that team and should have a great season.

Steve is going to play the starting QB (of course seeing he was the Pioneer League's MVP last year). Steve played about a half and made all the right plays.

Joey is going to play also. Joey's position is called the Flyer. It is a combination of the Strong Saftey and outside LB. Joey as a redshirt Freshman, will be on special teams and if possible, play the Flyer. The guy in front of him is an All American and returning starter. Joey is listed at 6'1" 200 lbs.

On another note, Tim McCoy who played at Dayton with Watson and also at Solon, is part of the coaching staff. Another note about UD football weight room records, Steve holds the schuttle record and Tim McCoy holds the squat record. Solon has two of the 10 records !!

Good Luck to the Solon FB boys at UD.

I believe there is a game this season @ Duquesne in Pittsburgh. Hmmmm, any Comets want to go and support Steve, and Joe?

GO FLYERS!

Jake an All-Star

Great to see that Jake Voight will be at QB for the East squad in the Greater Cleveland East-West game Friday at John Carroll University field.

This is a nice honor and an opportunity for Jake to show some stuff before he leaves for Dayton's football camp in 6 weeks.

Solon has had some former players thrive in this game so it is a nice $5 summer fix for those fans who are restless for the upcoming season.

Good luck Jake and best wishes moving from a Comet to a Flyer.

Jake and Donnie Williams

Along with Jake Voigt will be Donnie Williams (DT/OL) on the East All Star team.

Donnie is going to play football at Mercyhurst with Josh Cobble (DE).

Yes this All-Star game is fun to attend. I believe Steve Valentino had 2 INT's the game he played in. Schmitts was also at that game.

Last years participants were Andy McGill (Washington & Jefferson) and Joey Janasek (Dayton).

Good Luck to Jake and Donnie !!

I just want to wish Jake and Donnie good luck and good health in the East-West game. You've made us proud for the last four years.

I also want to wish Darryl Baldwin all the best in Saturday's Big 33 game in Hershey.

GO COMETS!!, now and in your future endeavors. :thumb:

This game was a doozy!

The Solon Comets Jake Voigt threw the winning pass in the 4rth quarter to Nate Morris,( I think), and he went down at the 1 yd. line after gaining 20 yds. after the pass, and the East's Ronnel Spates from VASJ ran it in on the next play to take a 14-7 lead. Then they had to hold off Normandy's amazingly evasive QB, Casey Pierce to win the game. Pierce looked like he broke free on the last play of the game, but a saving tackle by a East defensive back ended this super exciting last quarter of the 2010 Cuyahoga County East-West All Star game.

Solon's other player in the game Donnie Williams had a stellar game at defensive tackle right next to another star of this game, Bedford's Nick Ihasz who is going to Toledo. The West QB I mentioned didn't start the game,Padua's James Flowers did, but Pierce came in to play in the 2nd quarter, and threw two TD's that were both dropped in the open. He is going to Kent St. and wow, he was impressive tonight with his passing and running. Both he and Jake absolutely showed up tonight. Bedford Channel's Isaiah Chambers scored the first td and had some spectacular punt returns along with carrys for yardage.

A lot of stars out tonight at John Carroll's beautiful stadium, University Schools Dan Frate at linebacker, Chagrin Falls Chris Gorman at safety, Glenville's Rodnell Pirce "hits" on defense, Midparks Dave Mogilnici punts and receptions,Cleveland Central Catholic's Jacoby Brown running and pass reception, there were many more seniors that just graduated and played so well in their last game before college. I easily could name eight more but just leave it that it was well worth the trip to University Hts., and the $5 price of the ticket. They should REALLY do more publicity for this event. Because football fans, it's worth going to. :)

It was a great game GrandPa, I made many mistakes in my report, uhhh, no program, not familiar with 90% of the players, etc. but forgetting the score is ridiculous.. actually I asked Comet Ron when he was dropping me off what the final was, he takes statins also for high cholesteral, ????? :)

Most important for Solon, Jake and Donnie both played G-R-E-A-T!!!

And that Normandy lefty-throwing QB got a lot of love from the Plain Dealer this morning. The crowd around us were all African-American mothers, sisters and girl friends of West players and they were as loud as can be and charmingly hilarious. And the stamping of the feet by hundreds of fans was amazing. Talk about the vuvulas in world soccer, that noise had nothing on Don Shula Stadium last night.

A shot in the dark

Here is a link to the photos that Palmieri took at the East-West game.

Way more than my eyes can take, so I chose the pregame & game link, chose to see them in pages rather than sections and started from the end to find Jake's (#9 in red) critical pass. It is on page 70! His lineman signal TD but I think it was short, but another play or so and they scored.

Let me know what page any other good photos may be found.

Nice set up Gramps! I looked at some pages, really nice pics of Jake before the game, and Donnie during the contest, then I came across the pictures of the Cleve Cent. Cath players female rooting section, and then myself, Comet Ron, and even the uncle of Isiahai Chambers, the star running back who is going to play at Mount Union. He, the uncle, was sitting next to me. Those were on pgs, 35 and 36, and were most flattering, (NOT) but I didn't go further yet. I saw Coach Shirrila sitting down from us, and Greg Voigt and the Mrs. across from us, but those were the only Solon people I saw at the game. I'm sure Donnie Williams people were there and I'll look at more later. Thanks for the set-up, you got me. Hope your knee is getting better since the replace.

About 19 weeks until football!

All-Star games & fans

Hurri, Great shots of you guys on page 36!

It is a fun game there at JC, especially when you have a connection to a player(s) or in your case, a connection to the history 55 years ago. My brother was a tight end at Carroll in the 60's for Coach Johnny Ray and now he too faces knee replacement.

I had a connection to the Big 33 game on NFL network but the game was a disjointed dud until the last 5 minutes. Players, coaches and a Ohio/PA ref group caused many stoppages, record penalties and the biggest problem - the direct snap! I watched for the first quarter through 4-6 timouts and the last 5 minutes but Baldwin wasn't able to make a play during that time. He is tall in the huddle though!
