Can somebody explain to me how St. X has (debatably) the best OHSAA Cross Country program of the 21st centruy, but only 3 GCL titles in that time for track?

It's difficult to win a small league meet on distance points alone. My school has lost dual meets in the past where they scored all 32 points available in the 4x800, 800, 1600, and 3200. Couldn't come up with the other 33 (if no pole vault) or 37 points needed to clinch the meet.

In addition to small league vs. big league, sprinters are far more valuable than distance runners in track. Paige Floriea won the state meet by herself last year by winning the 100, 200, 400 and long jump. Justin Braun was 2nd in the total team standings on the boys side winning the 100, 200 and 400. So XC isn't a great predictor of track success.

With that said, has anyone ever won the 800, 1600 and 3200 at a state meet?

As other said CC runners can only get so many points but mix in huge number of students should be able to find enough points in non distance events.

What kind of relationship do the track and football teams have at St. Xavier? Depending on the culture of the school and the relationship between coaches, a strong football team is either the best or worst thing to happen to a school's track program.

I know CC points can only get you so far. But only 3 times out of the last 20 years? Especially when X was probably sweeping those distance events in many of those years.

Agreed on Football. The majority of NFL players do track and field. Yet so many forbid their athletes from going out for track. Especially when your school is mediocre or worse at football, so silly. (Obviously not the case with X, but other schools)

Lancermania could chime in on this, but X has seemingly dominated the distance events in the last 8-10? years. LaSalle was a monster in CC in the early 2000's and still pretty decent all the way till 2010. They had some very good track distance guys. I'd love for Elder to develop some distance runners, and it will be interesting to see if Moeller can do better with Frank Russo at the helm. I look forward to this meet every year.

St. Xavier won six state titles in Cross Country and Elder won five, four in the 1980s while La Salle only won two in Cross Country. What I am most proud about with La Salle is that they are the only GCLS team to make the podium in Track & Field getting there three times in 1994, 2008, and 2011, La Salle more than any of the other schools got the athletes at the school out for track and field.

Russo & his staff made a great group of coaches.

This all does help explain things for me, thank you. Still, can’t believe that the (debatably) best CC team in Ohio history (2013/14 St. X Bombers) were unable to win a conference track title. But they had bigger fish to fry.

Well, St. Xavier won their 8th GCL championship tying them with Moeller for thrid place. They went 1,2 in the 800, 1600, and 3200, also won two relays--4 x 800 and 4 x 400, one field event--LJ, and one hurdle event--300 to edge out Moeller by four points 83-79

Two new league records were set at this meet held at UC.

St. Xavier sophomore Evan Trapp won the 1600m in 4:15.19 taking down Michael Vitucci's record of 4:16.41 from 2014.

La Salle junior Timiko Jackson took down Devier Posey's manual time from 2008 of 21.7 with his 21.64

Wouldn't that make them 5th? I thought Bacon has the most with Purcell 2nd.

I fixed it. To be fair to Moeller and La Salle who didn't have a senior class until 1964, we have to eliminate results before 1964
Roger Bacon and Purcell compete in the coed division not with us any more, so you have to go to the co-ed division if you want information about them.
