Electric car owners must pay their fair share.

Oh they will be charged. The Biden administration and future democrat governments are just waiting for the electric car to become a major vehicle choice on the roads. THEN they will be hit by all sorts of user taxes.
No free rides, do it now.

30 states already charge EV fees.

How much are they paying? $200 one time fee in Ohio. $200 /.568 tax That's 352 gallons of gas.

On average, Americans drive 13,500 miles a year, according to U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration. When you divide 13,500 miles by how many miles per gallon the F-150 gets, that means the average American uses 562 gallons of gas a year.Oct 11, 2021

Ohio isn't close and we have approx the 14th highest tax rare for gasoline.

Well there's one big difference between a horse and an automobile: they are entirely different ways in which to move from point A to point B. It was clear that the superior technology of a motor vehicle had a huge built in advantage to the horse. In contrast the only difference between an electric car and a gas powered car is the energy to drive it. they are BOTH still cars in pretty much every other way. And since oil is plentiful and the current high prices are a transitory event caused by Biden and the Russia/Ukraine war there is no reason to think that electric vehicles will supplant gasoline powered vehicles any time soon.

I suspect that the future will belong to hybrids that get high gas mileage that allows the consumer to exploit the best of both technologies.

you have a valid point, but if you run the same numbers with a 2020 toyota corolla, the gallons per year is about 385, still low, but not absurdly so.

The Ohio portion of the gas tax is $0.385, so if the $200 fee is going straight to Ohio, that should be a net gain (@519 gallons of gas), depending on the comparison vehicle.

I think electric cars are a good idea, but they’re not practical for most people at this point in time.

They should be paying more, as such the effects of “road use” are based on vehicle weight, and it’s long overdue. An electric Volvo XC40 weighs about 1000 pounds more than it’s gasoline counterpart, and an electric F150 weighs about 1600 pounds more than a gasoline truck. They should be paying more for insurance as well, because the added weight will inflict more damage vehicle in an at-fault accident.

An electric car performs the same task as a gasoline powered car. It is really not a new or revolutionary invention.

Your analogy is a poor one.
