Eastern Cincinnati Conference

I watch a lot of hudl footage on prospects. What percentage of his steals would we say are "pick-6" steals where he reads the passing lane and goes down the court often for a dunk? Seems like a lot. That's different from poking the ball away from the guy you're guarding.
What is not shown on his highlights are where he gambles and misses and the offensive player is left with an open driving lane. It’s high risk, high reward defense, and better players/teams will turn the ball over less against it and have easy driving lanes.

Exactly. It's risk/reward. The reward is layups. That's the best reward there is. The risk is open lanes to the basket, which is not great, but it still encourages a more up tempo game, which is to their advantage. Slow pace is the last thing they want, as the Turpin game illustrates. Obviously, it's harder to make it work against better players/teams. It's also harder to stay in front of better players/teams. Whatever strategy you employ is harder against better players/teams. That's why they're better.

I also dispute that he's missing on many steal attempts, leaving wide open lanes. I just don't remember seeing a lot of that. When he sells out and goes for the ball, I think he's got a good success rate. And I don't think anyone's eyes are lighting up over the easy baskets they're going to get when they see him line up against them. I'd guess most players would much rather have someone else guarding him.

Tonight: Winton Woods and West Clermont by double digits and coast in. Look out for Harper from WC. A POY Candidate.
Walnut needs to win this to prove they could be making a jump. Walnut wins, Loveland packs in the defense to see if Walnut can make enough jumpers. Is the Anderson Turpin game on? Turpin wins if so. Anderson struggles in the Red Zone. No Piening or Austin-Robinson on roster? Those two were valuable last year.
Little Kings game is high energy. Kerr can't believe they called a foul on Sellers!! Tommy Clark gets a couple steals in the 4th to seal it.
The Clark family celebrates at Putters.

Eli’s, Putter’s is terrible! I wish I could get into basketball but it’s just not my thing. I will say this thread has become entertaining though. One guy went from agreeing with you about the best player to calling you a complete dumb arse lol.

For as much as WW outmatches Lebanon athletically and size, not impressed with the former. Lebanon hanging tough, winning by one at the half. Coffey looks like an upperclassman now.

WALNUTPOSTING: Walnut Hills 41, Loveland 31

Truth nuke here: pretty much from the moment I stepped foot on this earth, I have been completely unable to shoot a basketball. No matter how much I practiced or how many people gave me tips, nothing would ever go in. And so I came to admire players that, like me, had a limited ability to actually score, but could make their presence on the court felt in other ways. Most recently, for my Buckeyes, that guy is Evan Mahaffey - he has such a long wingspan and is (usually) great on defense, but ask him to shoot a 3 and you'll see the funniest misses in all the land.

Tonight for the Walnut Hills Eagles, that guy was Landen McDaniel. In the first half, he was absolutely ice-cold shooting, but still managed to show the hustle and effort that keeps you on the court, blocking multiple shots and snagging acrobatic boards on both sides of the floor. His defensive effort was a big part of the reason Walnut took a 20-17 lead at the half; his offensive game was a big part of the reason they weren't up by more. In the second half, the effort on defense was still there, but McDaniel wisely turned his focus inside, and was finally able to do some damage on offense with 8 points in the half, helping Walnut tough it out in the fourth for a 41-31 victory. As such, I humbly nominate Landen McDaniel for the first-ever Orca's Lunch Pail Guy of the Week Award (which I just made up five seconds ago).

Other top performers: Austin scored 16, ten in the first half, and was generally efficient with a handful of rebounds. Brock looked much closer to the Brock I wanted to see entering the season with 10. Everyone else combined for 7. Chase Martin had nearly half of Loveland's points with 14 (plus a handful of tie-ups in the 4th that got Loveland the ball back); no one else on Loveland had more than 5.

Kings over LM 65-58. Tommy Clark MVP. He has to be the best player in the conference. LM never quit and Kerr got the most he could but we couldn't hit open shots at the end. Long season but we need another W soon.

Kings comes out with a hard fought W at LM by 6 or 7 points. A game of quarters. LM win the odd ones, Kings won the even ones. Myles Bsker carried the offensive load for Kings staying hot throughout. Clark with a typical box score filling game, and got the shot back. Excellent game for Sellers, as well, probably 22-10 I’d guess. The highlight of the game was an epic clash at the rim, where Clark got a steal from Sellers, headed for the basket with Sellers a step ahead of him. Clark sized him up, decided to go for the dunk, Sellers went up, got the rejection and both collapsed to the floor looking like either could have been injured severely. Sellers helped Clark up, and they dapped each other up over it when they came back out for the second quarter.

Lebanon 58

Lebanon took the lead into the fourth but Coffey fouled out with about five minutes to go and it was a wrap. They couldn't counter WW's size on the glass or quick hands on the ball D.

Credit to Lebanon. End of bench guys from last year are thrust into starting spots and are stepping up. Coffey is going to be one of the most exciting players in Ohio for the next few years. It-factor.

That was a cool moment. Kudos to Clark for going for that dunk. I noticed they chatted for a minute after the game. With social media and AAU these kids all know each other now. There was a time when a play like that in a LM/Kings game could of led to fights , ejections, or a technical. Part of me wishes it was still that way, but what a neat interaction by two of the best in the league. Clark really impressed me night.

Yeah, I think Tommy was pretty hot about it. It looked like Sellers picking him up diffused the situation. I’m glad it went that way and not the other.

As long as Chivington's around leading the Lebanon program elite player's like Coffey will end up hitting the transfer portal lol!

Winton Woods over Holy Cross, 58-46. Warriors sprang a run in the late 3rd quarter to pull away.

That sounds about right. The ball was flying around everywhere and his hands were never far from it. The refs kind of called a weird game too. They called it super tight in the first few minutes, and both crowds were so loud it felt kind of like there were makeup calls going on. Anyway, he had a couple of weird offensive fouls and a couple of weird travels. (Anyone else think they’re calling traveling weirdly tight this year?) And trying to force some crazy passes when they went cold in the third quarter, because he and Baker were the only ones scoring.

The steals are definitely legit. He was everywhere on defense.

WALNUTPOSTING: Walnut Hills 59, McNicholas 57

When the Rockets' Owen Nienaber buried a three with a minute and a half left in the game to tie it at 57, followed by Ty Austin fouling out on a flimsy charge next possession, one could be mistaken for believing this was another good old-fashioned 2023 Walnutting. Instead, the team showed a new level of resilience by getting a stop, drawing a foul on the rebound from McNick's inexperienced big man, Stoffregen burying both free throws, getting another stop out of the timeout, and Rivers claiming the rebound to run out the clock. Score one for the good guys, 59-57.

All eight Eagles in Walnut's regular rotation scored points, with Austin (12), Stoff (12), McDaniel (11), and Wilson (9) leading the way. Stoffregen and McDaniel both had great days inside, with most of McDaniel's points coming on a pair of and-ones in the first quarter. Rivers started his third straight game, scoring 4 and collecting a bunch of rebounds to go along with it. Piening's first second-half action in a week or two resulted in a big corner three a minute into the fourth quarter; he finished with 5. Brock did not have his best game, as he only scored 2 and fell asleep a few times on defense. McNick had 4 guys in double figures, which is interesting considering I was told Grant Waters was the only good player on their team.

Record is 3-1, and this represents Walnut's first three-game winning streak since January 2023. They face a stiff test next Tuesday at Little Miami.

So did Kings/La Salle, like, actually happen? All I saw on every social media was one picture of the JV game.

I stopped by the school about 6:45 to catch the second half. The parking lot was mostly empty, except for some basketball players loitering about. I checked the ECC website thinking I messed the time up. It confirmed 6:00. So I went in to see what was up. There were some LaSalle folks standing talking near the gym. I approached and asked if there was a game. One of them told me it had been cancelled. I asked why, and was told there had been an “issue in the LaSalle community”, and there would be no game. It was clear they didn’t want to talk about whatever happened, so I left, confused. I tried all the relevant social media accounts to find something out, and obviously, there’s nothing out there. Weirdly, it seemed there was nobody from Kings around at all that I noticed. No idea what any of that means.

Seems one of our seniors passed away. No idea the circumstances ... just saw a post seeking donations of meals, gift cards and positive notes for the family. It's a rough time at LS right now.

Appears the Little Kings game didn't disappoint. 8 TO's for Clark, not good but congrats Knights.
Walnut with a good weekend. Looking forward to watching them.
Turpin took care of business. Lebanon is surprising, the freshman point guard must be the deal.
Caught 3 quarters of Milford vs WC, didn't think it was well played. Any word on Hubbard coming back?
