As someone who knows very little about this ranking system, is there any element of harbin-like components where who you beat matters? Or is 2/3 of the formula just who you play, who your opponents play, and no factor into which teams you beat?

The RPI Formula is 40% WP + 35% OWP + 25% OOWP.
No consideration is given to which Division your opponents are in, just your record, your opponents' records, and their opponents' records.

Played around with different weightings applied to the WP, OP, and OOWP. I think the weighting is the hardest part to optimize.

It's easy to pick apart the system because it's pretty bad, but there are going to be some interesting decisions during the draw.

For example, if Strongsville stays at No. 5 and Brunswick at No. 6, I think that Brunswick would forego the top seed in whatever district hasn't been selected and jump into whichever one Strongsville is in. And I wouldn't be that surprised if they would jump into the same side of the bracket.

I say that because there are probably 10 or so teams below Strongsville that Brunswick would rather avoid, including one way down there at No. 40 (SVSM).

You may see teams jump on opponents who are deemed as overranked to control their destiny more than ever.

In this scenario, I could see Brunswick rather facing Strongsville in a district semifinal than taking the chance that a team like SVSM (due to dwindling options) picks the same side of the bracket as them if Brunswick goes elsewhere.

You saw some of that the last couple of years but these teams were still split. Now, with all 76 being able to choose between 6 districts, could be some "crazy" decisions based off seeding.

I agree that there will be some "crazy" decisions, especially amongst those top 20-24 teams in the seeding. I suspect the location of the districts, likely being neutral courts, will not matter much in the decisions. It will be all about their perceived match-ups. Some districts could be really stacked with good teams.

it may have already been said on here and if so, i apologize but does this RPI just rank the teams in the region but the coaches still "place" their team into the desired brackets?

2 of the 6 districts feed into the Northwest Ohio Regional. I'm assuming the 1 seed with choose to stay in the NE Regional. Do you think that the next best team(s) will go into the other Regional to stay away from the 1 seed (assuming its Garfield or St. Ignatius) or do you think that they'll stay in the NE Regional?

Yes, that is correct.

The difference with prior years is that - previously, the 76 teams were split into 2 pods - Eastern (3 districts with host schools in the east part of NE Ohio) and Western (3 districts with host schools in the west part of NE Ohio). It was pre-determined what pod the teams were assigned to.

With this season, all 76 teams are lumped in together and can place themselves in any of the 6 districts. So the coaches can decide on which district (and which teams they want to match up with and which to avoid until perhaps the regional semi's or finals).

As Svillegrad points out as an example - if Strongsville gets a high seed (#5 as of this morning), but is perceived by some coaches (Brunswick, in his example, and the #6 seed) to be an easier match up, Brunswick could select the district Strongsville is in and be away from higher seeds like Garfield Heights until the regional finals (or even the states in Dayton)

The selection by various coaches will be pretty intriguing

In the scenario you bring up, I would think the #2 seed would elect to place themselves in the Akron-Toledo (NW) regional.

However, that #1 seed could select to be placed the Akron-Toledo (NW) regional. In this scenario, the #2 seed could likely select the NE regional.
For either Univ Toledo or Kent State regional, there is going to be some travel and so I am not sure it makes a difference

RPI pdated as of 2/9 (for the bracket selection) and game outcomes as of 2/14

With the final RPI and seedings on Feb. 9 and the bracket selections on Feb. 11, there are some interesting games that could affect seedings, including:

1 - Ignatius – Lutheran East (W), @ St. Edward (W), @ Buchtel (W), vs. Avon (W)
2 4 - Louisville - @ St. Edward (L), vs. McKinley (W), Massillon (W). The Leopards games @ Hoover (W) and vs Lutheran East are after the bracket selection
3 3 - Garfield Heights - @ Warrensville Hts (W), @ Lutheran West (L)
4 2 - Brecksville – Buchtel (W), North Royalton (W). The Bees’ game vs St. Edward (L) is after the bracket selection
5 10 - Strongsville - @ Medina (L), @ Cleveland Hts (L). The Mustangs game vs. Brunswick (W) is after the bracket selection;
6 5 - Brunswick – Mentor (W), @ McKinley (W). The Blue Devils games @ Strongsville (L), vs Medina and Mentor are after the bracket selection
7 6 - Green – Hoover (W), Hoban (L), McKinley (W). The Bulldogs game vs. GlenOak is after the bracket selection

You're right. I guess the 1 seed could go to the NW regional. Will be interesting to see.

The last 2 years, 2 of the northeast west districts (2 out of 3) went to Toledo and 1 went to Kent. Sometimes the higher seeds on the west side will determine which district they go into based on the state tournament matchups. For example, I know a few coaches who wanted to possibly avoid Centerville until the state finals last year.

Just over a week away from wrapping up this first ever RPI ranking, I think it looks pretty clear our top four teams (Ignatius, Garfield, Louisville, Brecksville) will remain in the top four (at worst top five) in one order or another. Given that they will have their first choices of location, I expect the following based on geography:

Ignatius to Lakewood
Garfield to Twinsburg (maybe Euclid, but Twinsburg is closer)
Louisville to Alliance
Brecksville to Copley (a league opponent gym)

Currently Brunswick is 5th, so if they stay that high I expect them to choose Elyria. Would a team like Green or Dover choose to be the top seeded team at far away Euclid, or stick to somewhere much closer as the second highest seed at Louisville's district? Tough call. I tend to think coaches will side with draw over location.

I think the coaches, at least the roughly top 20 seeds, will choose match-ups over location with the objective of getting as far as they can in the tournament with their best match-ups.

Recall last year - Elyria and Copley district winners went to the Akron-Toledo regional semifinals. The Lakewood and Twinsburg district winners were paired in the regional semifinals in the Kent regional.

Based on your expectations, that could mean an Ignatius-Garfield match-up in the regional semifinals. I do not think either team would pick those locations such that they would meet so early. For these 2 particular teams, I suspect one will select 1 of the 2 districts that feed the Akron-Toledo regional and the other will select 1 of the 4 districts that feed the Kent regional.

If any of these top seeded teams are really considering to think ahead of possible matchups at the states at UD, would they prefer a state seminal matchup of:
Region 2-Kent vs. Region 3-Columbus (i.e. Olentangy Orange, Delaware Hayes, Reynoldsburg, etc)
or
Region 1-Akron-Toledo vs. Region 4-Cincinnati (Moeller, Centerville, Elder, etc)?

For Mentor - do you think that coach K would prefer just Euclid or a match-up with which of the 13 teams that are currently seeded higher, but which may be at a different location?

For reference, current RPI for the top 20 in the Northeast, recognizing there's a lot of big games that could affect seeding coming up soon

1. Do we know which districts are going to Kent versus Akron/Toledo? I agree that for the very top teams like Ignatius/Garfield, they are going to factor in probable regional draw.

2. As for Mentor, I think Krizancic will lean toward draw and not location. Euclid would be preferred of course but I don't think he will stick to that as his only destination.

The rankings below appear to be the final RPI ratings for the seedings and bracket selections for the tournament. Bracket selections will take place on Sunday.

The top 6 seeds are: (1) Ignatius, (2) Brecksville, (3) Garfield Heights, (4) Louisville, (5) Brunswick, (6) Green
The next 6 seeds are: (7) Dover, (8) Barberton, (9) GlenOak, (10) Strongsville, (11) St. Edward, (12) Hoban

There shall be interesting decisions by the coaches of St. Edward and Hoban (as well as Jackson, Mentor, North Royalton and Hoover after them)

– Will any of these teams select the #2 spot in a district with either Ignatius or Garfield Heights as #1?
- Or will they select the #3 spot in a district with the remaining #1’s or the #2’s of Dover, Barberton, GlenOak, Strongsville? Selecting to be the #3 seed may be the easier path into the regionals as arguably St. Ed’s and Hoban can be viewed as better than the #2’s ahead of them in these RPI ratings.

Cleveland.com reported yesterday that the Elyria Catholic and Lakewood districts will feed into the Akron-Toledo regional (region 1). The Alliance, Copley, Euclid and Twinsburg districts will feed into the Kent regional (region 2)

For those interested the top 3 seeds in the Northwest District are Findlay, Whitmer, and Sandusky.
Their RPI's would put them at #1, #3, and #5 if placed in the Northeast District. I'm not sure that the NEO teams would avoid these teams like they probably would St Ignatius or Garfield Heights.

Predictions:

Ignatius- Lakewood
Brecksville- Copley
Garfield Hts- Euclid
Louisville- Alliance
Brunswick- Elyria
Green- Twinsburg

Predictions:

Ignatius- Lakewood
Brecksville- Copley
Garfield Hts- Euclid
Louisville- Alliance
Brunswick- Elyria
Green- Twinsburg
If Ignatius selects Lakewood, that would mean their preference and goal is to win/advance to the Akron/Toledo regional and if successful, versus Region 4 (Moeller, Centerville) at the states.
Euclid is another option (maybe 5 - 10 minute longer drive time from school than to Lakewood) and that would mean their preference is to win/advance to the Kent regional and if successful, versus Region 2 (one of the Columbus teams) at the states.
Don't know their preference, but it could be either

Your other predictions make sense geographically, but Garfield Has could choose Lakewood, Elyria or Twinsburg

I’ve noticed that Dover has a listed record at 14-2, but they actually lost 3 games (New Albany, Bishop Hartley, and Linsly). Does the Linsly game not count in the RPI or something?

It should. Mentor lost two games to out of state teams that is included in their record. Just sounds like another inconsistency with this system.
